Going back again for a go

Ok.I was originally playing this when it first came out and then quit to go to EQ/EQ2 then back then SWG then back then WOW then a whole bunch of others (coh, f2p and p2p) now I am back again to check things out.  I am finding there have been good changes and I decided to subscribe again.  This game continues to have a place on my hardrive for a lot of reasons.

For an old game it is still a lot of fun.  It can be hard to learn compared to wow but it can be a lot more rewarding in a lot of ways.  THere are a couple of good die hard sites taht still support information about the game,  I am one of those disgruntled SWG players that got stepped on by the CU/NGE that am still hungry for a good space MMO.  AO has a lot to offer and is a complex experience with a lot of lore.  It seems on RK1(Atlantean) there are still a ton of folks playing this title and so I can still get groups in a lot of the areas pretty easy.  I got the $5 membership so I can do shadowlands and I think it is well worth it.

I just wish there was more interest in developing it to the next level.  True there is a steady development going on with a new graphics engine around the corner but there are still parts of the game that could be developed such as a better system of selling, better housing, new items, mail system and so on.

I am kind of hoping they look at this as I think they could make a lot of revenue from people who are tired of WOW and want something different.  Lately it seems like every new MMO that comes out looks good to me until it actually launches and turns out to be so much less.  At least with this one I know I like the game play and it is predictable,

A couple of things I discovered that make the game a lot more fun are recipebot and gridstream.  Recipebot is an in game resource that tells you what an item does and is good for and what it can be used to make.  I found it by watching a youtube video on AO and it was talked about in there.  It takes a lot of confusion out of the game as there are tons of items you will come across.  Gridstream productions is an in game radio station that is actually pretty good.  It is not part of the game itself but it meshes well with the game and it is cool to listen to as well as interact with the DJs while playing.

Overall I am giving it another go until something better comes along.  I wish there were more informational reviews here on MMORPG where people who are interested in the game could share things like this.  Usually most posts seem bent on talking you out of playing the game it seems.

Recipebot,  itembot, helpbot, raidbot, orgbot, clicksaver, etc. are all third party programs created, hosted, and updated by players. Although given the greenlight from FC, they are not a part of the game, but player made addons. These are things that would have been and should have been implemented by FC, but they figure it's cheaper to let the players do their work for them.

The bad thing is when those players decide to quit, or they're comps go down, so do the bots unless or until someone else decides to host them. It's also up to the players to update them when an FC update breaks them. Since the original creators of these bots are mostly long gone, it can be awhile before they are updated and running again in those instances. There have been many instances of the bots being down for weeks and even a month ot more because noone could be arsed to host them. After all, not everyone likes to keep their comp on 24/7 for other players benefits.

I'm pointing this out because it's the players who created these bots, along with the ones who now host and/or update them, who deserve the credit, not Funcom.

Good to know and to recognize theses addon writers.  Still it says something that these addons are still around after 7 years and we can still use them today.  I also got a chance to try out some of the ones you mentioned in your post.

I think that games that allow addons really open up a lot to their communities.  I have some addons on WOW that are invaluable and I play on player created maps for CS/DOD.  I think it is a good thing.

I think FC at least deserves credit for encouraging this in their game.  Hopefully these will continue on as I have really enjoyed using them in the game and it has made it a better experience.

mwah its ok, clicksaver is still getting updated :O i think that itemsbot is down, but there must be another bot called itemsnet (for example) that is running.. i use our own orgbot myself. being in a (active) org is a great addition to find plenty of action/raids ingame =) its just too bad recipebot isnt being updated anymore, but at least its still running

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
