Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

If old mmo's were so great why dont you start again?!

If you had an old mmo and you've havent played it in a while why not play again. Start over get fresh start we could have an entire restart and refresh of old games. Just think what would happen if everyone quit there mmo right know and joined some of the old mmo's Like UO, AC, DAoC, EQ1, AO.

We could show developers we want what we had and not what we have know!

I would pay a lot to get the chance to go back and play my old game again. But SOE violently murdered Star Wars Galaxies, then advertised the corpse.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Would go back to UO and SWG in a heartbeat if they were the original games I purchased.

I did go back and try EQ again this last month when they reopened all the old accounts.  Unfortunately that mystique is gone.  I have a 65 necro and I was soloing in all the new lands.  Except the grind was the first thing I felt, and in EQ when it takes 2-3 mins to solo a mob the grind gets to you REAL fast.

UO got me feet wet but in EQ I jumped right in, and today it's something I can't get back into.

No point in going back to EQ1.  The feeling it had when it started is long gone.  And in the game I really liked, SWG, there's nothing to go back to.

Just my opinion, but I think there are 2 major reasons why most people don't go back:

    1) The old games have changed too much over the years...for the worse.

    2) Populations are no where near what they use to be.

Take and old MMO, roll it back to it's early state (with some fixes here and there), market the hell out of it, and you could probably bring in a decent number of players.

    3) Account gets erased after 3 months and have to buy whole new key code and start all over with new character (Final Fantasy 11)

Several reasons. Many of the old games have been changed to a "new" style format killing the original feel of the game.  Or, the population is too low now, or the companies have moved on to newer games and don't support the old ones anymore...  Many reasons people don't go back. And even if we did, developers wouldn't start supporting them, they like releasing boxes, new games, boxes gets them money.

Yep. AC1 is just too underpopulated for me (I have been back), and apparently there are some technical reasons why Turbine can't do server merges with it - or I'd be there. And like some other posters have already mentioned, the other MMORPG I'd go back to again in an instant if I could is Pre-NGE SWG. So screw the rules here at mmorpg.com, I'm going to admit I'm pulling for a Pre-NGE SWG emulator to be released.

As for the rest, in my book there's not another worthwhile mmorpg left to play. So I don't play them anymore. I just hang out here whining about the good old days instead.

Problem is you cant play UO pre-AoS on EA servers. people are truly nostalgic bout old games because they really are gone; like a best friend you loved and they died and they never coming back

I only ever resubscribed a game once and it was not fun the second time.

I have enjoyed playing lots of old MMO's that I have never played previously.

Yes, I do play and enjoy old MMO's

No, I do not enjoy replaying  MMO's. It is more fun to try something different.

FFXI, I liked the Classes in the game and the fact that it was pretty much impossible to lvl up solo. I love games where you have to group  a lot.

Personally I have done this, I'm currently playing Everquest off and on, and really enjoying it.

I had a very similar experience.  I've moved on, I can't stand playing anything so slow paced now.  The crazy thing is that the game is actually a ton faster than it used to be.  That I had the spare time and patience to make real progress in it back in the day now mystifies me.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Because classic EQ doesn't exist anymore. It was dummied down and turned into a raiders only game by SOE after Brad Mcquaid relinquished creative control. It's also now instanced and has had minimaps added pointing where to go and teleports are available everywhere, etc. It sucks now.

Horizons was a great game at first but was mismanaged which hurt the population to the point where it wasn't worth playing as a MMOG. Also they didn't deliver on the personal plots for all players which ruined the game for many of us. It's being repaired by the new owners but I don't want to play on a 4 year old server. The fun of Horizons is growing on a fresh world and rebuilding all the structures. Until they launch a fresh server start, it's all window dressing.

Ryzom also needs a fresh server start, for me to consider playing again. Ryzom also suffered from low population numbers due to being mismanaged and not marketed properly. The new owners need to run an advertising blitz along with a fresh server launch. I am not interested in playing on a 4 year old server.

I started playing mmo's with 10six and till this day its the best mmo ive ever played.

It had such a hardcore following that once sega closed it, the community brought it back.

The graphics are really dated 1999, but the gameplay and core features are still the best out of any mmo.

I actually even played it again last year, if they would make another one it would be my last mmo id ever play.

Even with the best gameplay, playing a 10 year old game just sucks.

I guess the biggest reason to me.  Would be time invested, and friends.    In games I don't look for some super short cut.  I go out and have a blast learning the land, learning my skills.  That takes time, and sometimes after you done a few times over already its just the idea of starting from nothing again that holds me back.     Plus the friend issue made doing all this fun also and sharing that experience, with them gone also just dont feel like starting the process of meeting others again.

With a new game its fun just running around and you make the friendships as you go without even trying.  Going down the almost exact same path before alone isnt.

To answer the topic title: Because most brilliant, old MMOs have been ruined by recant patches, hacks, or a player-base which is too small. Some even a mixture of the lot.

i play Eve thats considered an "old game"

    Or so people tell me.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

To return to my "old" MMO I would first have to leave it. I am still actively playing Everquest, and have no intentions of leaving it any time soon. I have friends in my guild that I have know and ejoyed playing with for many years now, that is something no FotM game can replace.

I do play other MMO's at the same time, but seldom stay with the same one for more than six months.
