here are the problems that I see coming to Bioware:
- they underestimate what SOE has done to the Star Wars Galaxies Veterans
- they underestimate what will happen if their kotor mmo will become another wow clone beside all of these unfinished cookie cutter causal player games we have seen during the last few years (vanguard, dark & light, age of conan)
- they think that the IP "star wars" will be a guarantee success, even more than word of warcraft, only because its star wars
- many players like the "original" star wars galaxies beause of the sandbox style gameplay and because the players where the content, not stupid "get 7 of X and bring it to Y" quests like in word of warcraft
but of course I could be all wrong and bioware is about to develop one of the biggest sandbox style games the world has ever seen, right after ultima online and pre-cu star wars galaxies, we will see
Prepare to be disappointed then, as has been stated, Bioware owes nothing to the vets the way SOE did. I myself liked Pre CU a lot and am still waiting for SOE to loose their license to LA and hav eto shut down SWG. Does that mean I'm going to be angry at Bioware for not delivering? No! I'm more mature than that, I understand that they are not SOE, I understand that they will follow THEIR model and I also understand, from their experience, I'm sure that they will do their best to deliver a fun and enjoyable game akin to KOTOR, after all, that is what they're good at. They don't have much experience (that I know of) at creating sand box games so WHY SHOULD THEY try to do something thay're not all that familiar with? As lon as they deliver the depth that and story telling that KOTOR is well known for, I'm game.
Oh, and your WoW-bashing is tiresome, misguided and ridiculous. If you think WoW was THE ONLY one that came up with that kind of questing system, then you need to get your head examined or play more MMO's because the whole "kill this bring it to that person" quest system has been in online games since WAY before WoW, so do yourself a favor and stop making ridiculous accusations against WoW without first knowing the facts.
Here's the thing though: every MMO has the same questing system. We've all done it so many times ;/ Look at AoC! AoC has SUPERB graphics and animations, however, players are just so sick and tired of the same old crap. I think the op is just trying to say - we need something original.
Imho listening to the community is exactly what they DON'T want to do. Bioware knows how to make games, and they do a great job. Wow is the result of devs listening to the players. when EQ and FF11 were the juggernaunts, everyone bitched about the difficulty, inability to solo, and the grind. Blizzard went and changed all of that. (of course now people don't want that) People saw the results and were disgusted. well guess what people? you asked for it
This is exactly the problem. Developers need to learn when to listen to the people and when not to. The masses are who they will listen to. Its when a developer tries to cater to all of the people is when they lose their direction and end up creating a confusing mess. If they could stick to their guns and make what THEY want to make is when the game will be great.
I agree. You don't simply listen to the masses. They don't know what they want, and they will ask for things they THINK they want, but then realize they don't want once you give it to them.
However, you SHOULD listen to yoru beta testers. If they say something isn't working, or something isn't fun, you should pay attention, and see what you can do to fix it.
On the same page as you guys, look at Cliffy B when he made Gears of War, hes been quoted as saying "I didnt make a game for fans, I made a game for me, something I wanted to play." Alot of people gave him shit for that, but that is the same thing I would do.

1. This is Bioware not SOE. Bioware has a great rep for keeping their fans happy and it considered one of the best companies in gaming.
2. WOW clone ? You know when there is a new mmo coming out there is always people who right away think it is going to be a WOW clone because its linear. This is Bioware, they don't copy anyone's work. I'm sure there will be things in the game that we have seen already but Bioware will most definitely add some new things to the game.
3. Star Wars > WOW its that simple. Warcraft is a nice ip but it no way shape or form does it even compare to the epicness of Star Wars.
4. I agree that many people liked the sandbox style in SWG but I think that as long as the gameplay is good many of the vets would consider playing the game.
You didn't actually call dark and light a cookie cutter mmo did you? My goodness, you did. It is my duty to inform you that every single possible ounce of credibility in your post is gone after that completely ignorant statement. The same can be said about Vanguard, although not to as high a degree. I guess I shouldn't expect much from anyone with a sig as asinine as yours.

One option would be to do something which showcases your understanding of the intricacies of the RPG elements in an existing MMO, such as World of Warcraft, Everquest 2 or City of Heroes. Examples include:
• A spreadsheet or website demonstrating a thorough understanding of another game’s inner workings.
• A design for a new class or system designed to fit into and augment the design of an existing massively multiplayer title.
Well I don't know about you guys, but this game is going to be one with the following:
Levels - (high end game play)
Classes
Raiding
City Sieging
PvP
Itemized Gear and Loot system
Based off of other Games such as WoW,EQ1-2,CoX
Mimic Pen and Paper GamePlay -> Linear Gameplay is a good bet.
I'm sorry but this just seems like the same ol' rehash of every other wow clone made to date. I don't know if they have a few tricks up their sleeve but who knows. But seeing that they want this stuff in their game the sandbox that everybody has been hoping for has already been thrown out the window for a more , hummmm piece of the "WOW PIE". At the very least the story won't suck and wont be sacrificed for stupid game play mechanics like all the other wow - clones. But alas only time will tell, but this make me a very sad panda.

Play AoC, it's a new type of action rp game if that's what you want.
I personally like the old school type of MMORPG and would be happy if that's what KotORO will be like.
As for it being a WoW clone...WoW isn't original so saying that it's a 'rehash of every other WoW clone made to date' is kind of silly. WoW is simply a traditional MMORPG in format. If KotORO was going to be a traditional MMO like that, you'd be wiser to call it an EQ clone.

I completely understand that, I do, but blaming WoW isn't going to solve anything either, he's trying to point all the problems at ONE game, when we know that this has been present in A LOT of games, so it is not fair assertion to make. I think what really SHOULD be asked is "Ok, we know that a lot of MMO's now a days have a similar questing system, WHAT can they be replaced with to make the game more fun?" but saying "It's WoW's fault for doing the same thing over and over again" is plain simply narrow minded and it completely misses the point. By putting the blame on WoW alone (as was stated by the OP himself) what you're really doing is voiding the fact that the other MMO's do it too. Hope that makes some sense.
I just hope if they really are doing Star Wars MMO it wont be dumbed down and they don't try to bring it for xbox or any other console.
yeah dude, cause the xbox version of KOTOR was totally dumbed down amirite?
This isn't an RTS, it's a friggen MMO...they can easily translate it to consoles without losing anything...it's not like the KOTOR games require tons of buttons to press, and the number of buttons on a 360 or even a ps3 controller are more than what your average MMO uses anyway...the only thing that you're losing is the ability to type if you don't have USB keyboard support, and that's done away with by voice chat, which is fully supported by both consoles.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

yeah, that's what it seems like based upon...what exactly? One comment by the head of EA has allowed you to draw all of these conclusions about the gameplay?
Come on people, common sense please.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
I disagree for 1 simple reason... The length at which Bioware goes to put depth and originality in their games are second to none. I love the company and played nearly everygame they have made. I doubt they would release a simplistic wow style game that so many others are trying to do.
Well, a successful MMO needs more than just Jedi and Bounty Hunter. Moreover, we need something other than "set-in-stone" classes that have a level 70-80 cap. We need superb crafting, land housing, and ability to mix and match professions to be successful. I'm hoping they don't go with the typical questing approach like every single WoW competitor has done. It's not going to work.
I'm just hoping that they know what a sandbox game is. They make some truly great console games, however, those have no place at all in the MMO realm.
I don't agree with that. Jedi/Sith are all they really need to bring in a lot of people. You could easily break the Jedi/Sith up into lots of different classes that all play differrent roles, use different kinds of lightsabers, and perhaps don't even use lightsabers at all. You could have Jedi that focus on healing, Jedi that are melee combatants, Jedi that stealth around, and many more. On top of this you could have a lot of different crafting proffesions available.
First off, SWG might be a memory for alot of players but I don't think it has any bearing on this game and how well it performs.
Second, they'll be coming up with their own advancement system and I don't know why anyone would think they'll try to recreate the pre-CU design of SWG. No matter what some gamers think Star Wars was never about sitting on the farm working on moisture vaporators and they'd be crazy to do that again.
The most important thing is that they make a playable, addictive game. It doesn't have to be perfect or 100% bug free if they make a fun game. KOTOR is the perfect setting for a MMO with its mixture of sci fi and medieval fantasy.

Read that link, basically its the game producers talking about this game, although back then it was just 'generic mmo' - now we know what the game is!
From that interview you can pretty much get that its not going to be sandbox, and that its more than likely levels. I just hope it isnt instanced to death, although, as mentioned elsewhere if they want to drive ahead with these personal content quests then I think it will be as heavily instanced as AoC

I'm not one of these people that demands a sand box, but I also don't think that we should be making assumptions like this...the job application that was posted gives more insight as to what could be in store I think...but even that is a lot of supposition.
The fact of the matter is that if Bioware is allowed to make the game that they want to make, it will be awesome...period, end of story. It will not please every single gamer, because that's impossible...but hopefully it will deliver an experience that is true to the old KOTOR games and is genuinely fun, and if they are given the time that they need (meaning I hope that EA doesn't mess it up) then it will be those things.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
it wont be a sandbox like you mean the word, so here have a tissue. but this is bioware ffs, they are not gona clone wow. it may be what you class as a theme park mmo, but I'm betting it will be a good one that you will play.
This topic is hilarious. How do you, OP, have the right to state the title of this thread as fact when in fact you know absolutely nothing about the game?

Hope that makes some sense.
yeah dude, cause the xbox version of KOTOR was totally dumbed down amirite?

My youtube MMO gaming channel

"
Bioware Kotor MMO = WoW with Lightsabres/SciFi Theme"
Exactly what i hope for and Bioware will be the perfect company to bring this to us.
it wont be a sandbox like you mean the word, so here have a tissue. but this is bioware ffs, they are not gona clone wow. it may be what you class as a theme park mmo, but I'm betting it will be a good one that you will play.
My blog:
This topic is hilarious. How do you, OP, have the right to state the title of this thread as fact when in fact you know absolutely nothing about the game?
I got nothing against a WoW clone as long it really is a clone and not a clown.
