mini games will make me buy this game

I read recently that SGW's will have a few mini games that will be essential and worth learning.  The one that excited me most of all was the skill that let you crack open doors, locks etc.  Better still you can do this remotely  so  a team could dial in and ask you too unlock a door they are trying to get through, all for a price of course.

I love mini games in MMO's and they give such a variety to combat it really does help stretch out the enjoyment.  Just reading this has put SGW on top of my most wanted MMO list!

Yes, I for one hope they add a lot of side-content like mini-games. Either to compliment missions, like you noted with the lockpicking, or entertainment mini-games. Like sitting in a crowded player hub and playing "cards" or "checkers" with your friends, or whatever imaginative games they come up with.

Its just refreshing to know there is something else to do besides grind and kill. I join MMOs for the social environment, otherwise I could play a single player shoot'em up.

I don't like mini games in a MMOG. Basically it tells me the developers have to fill time with stupid mini games because the real game, the MMOG itself, sucks.

From a purely pessimistic standpoint, you could say that. Or you could say that, since they have such depth in the traditional gameplay they put aside the time to put in social and alternative depth to the game.

If all people wanted to do was raid and kill in a MMO, you would not see anybody hanging out in cities and points of interest, but they do, because its a social game.

I guess I'm passive on this one.

At first i was up in arms against the mini games but they're growing on me .

SG1 is an amazing IP i really really hope the game is good.

    Seem like a bonus.

I doubt I will be playing them much.  But if they do it right, it can only improve the game.  See, the idea is not to force someone to play tetris, but a type of activity which require a precise type of characters who happen to play tetris is needed.  Not exactly the same.

I just hope the mini games requirements will be clear at the character creation/start.  Would suck to realize after hundred of hours of playing that from now on, your group want you to play Tetris from now on!  :P

Have you ever watched an episode of Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis?  The minigames will compose much of the gameplay for the scientist and archaeologist classes, which aren't focused on combat.  Solving puzzles, translating ancient languages and using alien technology is a HUGE part of every Stargate episode, and that is receiving full attention in the form of minigames. Hacking computers will no longer be "okay go stand by the computer and watch a timer bar fill up for 30 seconds"  It will now hopefully be an interactive experience to increase the quality and immersion of the PVE game and will allow for a new dimension of gameplay for people who enjoy puzzles and problem-solving. It is in my opnion a fresh twist for the sickeningly stagnant PVE experience that too many developers apparently believe should be cloned from WoW exclusively.

This is my point actually.  Mini games don't  mean playing pointless games I am talking about games that compliment combat.  E.g. hacking physical locks, decryption, implanting virus's etc.  Imagine plugging into a system and then having to bypass AI to download a virus?  Then there is the social aspect in the city center's.  What is stopping an mmo having a futuristic sport that you could jump in and play for cash.  I feel that MMO's generally today focus everything on stunning graphics and hard core grinding.  I am finding myself playing more and more single player games because I gain more RPG elements from them.   Just knowing there is a different element in Stargate has really perked up my interest.

i've yet to see an example of a mini game, so i cannot say if they area good feature.

however, my worry is that they are either too simple and just a variation on a theme, or are so static that the solution will be posted on websites and thus make them meaningless.

overall, they cannot be too difficult, because the average player has to be able to solve them in a relatively short amount of time.  i can't imagine a team waiting around for several hours while someone tries to pick a lock...   hell, even 10 min would be too long to wait.

I'm actually really looking forward to the minigames as something to do besides just leveling. I also like the idea that the archetypes of a more intellectual nature will actually have something to do besides just try and fit in by fighting. Giving a scientist a puzzle as part of the mission - that happened in every episode of SG1 just about.

I also really like that they're considering making minigames part of crafting... so instead of taking raw materials and putting them in a bag and 'ding' there's your item, you might have to build it. I can see why some people might not like it but I like it better then the insta-items.

Yep I agree, I also think this is going to help them capitalize on Stargate fans. There's quite a few people interested in all aspects of Stargate, and there's certainly a lot more to the show than combat. Incidentally this is where I suspect Star Trek Online is going to be critically panned by Star Trek fans for the "everyone is Captain" debacle and will subsequently go down in flames. Should be interesting to see which game succeeds in living true to its IP; my vote is for Stargate Worlds. The devs know what's up.

I totally agree. I'm a Star Trek fan as well but it was exactly the 'everyone is a captain' thing that made me turn my back on it. I won't go into all the details of how I think they could have made it better or why that's a bad idea but I think SGW is going to win any battle the two might have hands down.
