Need some help! Need recommended a new mobo!

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

Hey all, my gaming rigs mobo died.   Need a new one.  So I am asking for help.  Money is not an issue so don't be worried about what the mobo cost that you recommend.   Here is what I have for a CPU and vid card and my current power supply.

Power Supply  700 watt Thermaltek

Processor:
AMD 3.2ghz Duo Core AM2

Memory:
4 gig Corsair Extreme

Hard Drive:
500gig WD

Video Card:
EVGA GeForce 9800 GX2 1gig

Please recommend a good mobo that can take the heat!  My last two boards were both Asus and they lasted about 6 months before burning up.    I'll go with MSI or Giga...no more Asus.  Make sure it is SLI capable.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance;

Kristi  ^_^

ahh yeah you're right, good catch, as for Asus, you're correct about that as well, pretty much junk the last few years. Giga builds some of the most solid boards, IMHO.

indeed their boards are solid and i like the cooling solutions also. they have really made an effort to elevate their status over the past couple years (though msi is not exactly a slouch) and i think it has paid. i think i like gigabytes pack-in software better than msi too.

My choice would be with the ABIT AN9-32X. Its a 590 chipset. You can read all about it here, with nice installation pics too. http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/ABIT_AN9-32X/index.shtml

You see ASUS has alot of mobo's here.

    My choices would be

    ABIT AN9-32X

    GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4

    MSI K9N SLI Platinum

If only you went with and Intel CPU, yours will hold you back if you get a second GPU. :)

    Hope helps.

OK I found this one.  It looks good.  Has a bit more going for it in that it has what the Giga has and a bit more.

    XFX nForce 750a SLI Motherboard

    What do you think?

My concern is if it will support this CPU.

    AMD 3.2ghz Duo Core AM2

What does the 750a chipset even work with an AMD procesor.  This board says it suppost AMD processors but this list confuses me.

    NVIDIA SLI-Ready MCPs:

    • NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI
    • NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI
    • NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI for AMD
    • NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI for AMD
    • NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI for INTEL
    • NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI for AMD
    • NVIDIA nForce Professional
    • NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16
    • NVIDIA nForce4 SLI
    • NVIDIA nForce4 SLI XE

    What does this list mean?

The NVidia chipsets mainly relates to the compatability of the grpahics cards. The detailed specs shows it supports AMD Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 FX, AMD Athlon 64 X2, AMD Athlon X2 and AMD Phenom so you should be good.  Plus it has PCI Express X16 Slots: 2 - Support SLI x 8 Mode so that should cover your SLI requirements. I assume you have DDR2 RAM.

Side note, if you wanted Crossfire you'd go for a X38/48 or P35/45 motherboard, probably with an Intel chipset.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

I really wish I could go with this board.  It would be perfect.  However, if you read the specs it does not support 125w AM2 processors like the AMD 6400.  ::sigh::

The XFX nForce 750a SLI Socket AM2+ motherboard generates a spectacular graphics experience for gamers and extreme PC builders ready to create systems running on AMD’s powerful AM2+ or AM2 processors up to 95W.

So I guess I'll go back and take a look at the Abit and Gigabyte boards, maybe even an EVGA board.   Anything other than an Asus.   Asus just doesn't make the boards they use to.

  • TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

OK...going with an MSI board.   It isn't the best, but it'll due for now until I can build me an Intel gaming rig from the ground up.   ^_^

MSI Board I went with.  <<< clicky

Oh and thanks Avery, it was one of the boards you suggested.   Looks like it'll be a good board.  ::hugs::

Either go for Intel/NVidia or AMD/ATI. An nForce with AM2 socket is only made for the die-hard AMD fans, who want NVidia. Probably why they burned up, nobody really wants to make them, but they do to keep everybody satisfied.  So either go for an AMD Phenom (quad-core, who do you want a dual-core anyway), or Intel quad (extreme, if you have the money for it).

I know AMD has some nice mobo's, which support up to 4 graphic cards, 2 if you want 9800 X2's.

And your main problem probably... Not the mobo, but the cooling! If you're really concerned about the heat, get multiple coolers (even multiple water coolers). Get a workstation (way more room in those, keeping it cooler).

You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.

Woohoo!  She's back up and running!   This new mobo is awesome.   Very tweakable!   Loving it so far!
