Why Does WoW Load Up So Fast???

War_EagleWar_Eagle Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 472

I have a big fat 0 amount of knowledge in programming.  It just never appealed to me.

But I do have a question.  How come WoW loads so fast, yet other games I play take forever?  Sometimes when I load other games I sit there for upwards of 30 secs or more.  Yet WoW loads in about 3 secs.

Why the big difference?  Why, why, why?

WoW is actually a dumbed-down, re-release of minesweeper I think.

Blizzard optimised the client for WoW far more then most companies do. They programmed the engine to boot up and run well on even the lowest rung of PC's thats all it comes down to. Hope this helps.

Because it takes very low requirements and graphics suck so there's not so much advanced stuff to load O.o.....

The lack of content silly, doesn't take long to load it up.

mhm, ive rarely had any issues in starting up WoW, and many times the most it takes is a few seconds logging on.

WoW loads up in 3 seconds because it doesn't need that much of a computer to run it. Cartoon graphics = fast loading.

Blizzard tries to make their game available to almost everypne, so they keep the graphics quality lower so people with bad pcs can still play the game at a reasonable level.  Its actually a pretty good marketing stratgey if you ask me.

That might be the understatement of the decade.

Here's the thing: for any given level of technological requirements, any given number of polys, the Blizzard art staff has always produced superior art.  They understand that for aesthetic appeal, style trumps technology.   For every "hardcore gamer" that disparages their style, there are 100 paying customers who think it looks great.

Has nothing to do with the system requirements. WoWs engine is just much better made then people like to give it  credit for. Look at games with lower or equal requirments like everquest 2, lineage 2, city of heroes. Those games always take a long time to get started compared to WoW, and look at a lot of the free games the same issue.

Load speed has as much to do with engine optimization as it does with your own computer specs.

They have good programmers and the textures aren't that detailed in WoW.

I don't know about the programmers, but the languages and systems they use in the game are very lightweight. Just like comparing JPG and PNG images, the quality between them in most cases is indistinguishable, but the JPG format is a small fraction of the size. XML and LUA are both very lightweight, and comprise most of the game. Essentially, the entire interface is just a stripped down webpage. I'm not as familiar with the back end but I imagine you'd find the same deal.

My question is why does WoW play so horribly in window mode and so well in full screen....

Yes the graphics are lower end, but I doubt you will find a better MMO engine anywhere.  Not to mention a better scriptable UI API

I don't like WoW, but I will give them credit for being the best MMO technically wise.

Well, Blizzard aimed low with the graphics for WoW.  They figured they could compensate for the low technical quality with high artistic quality.  Some don't like it.  Some do.  Overall, I think it was a calculated move that payed off.  More importantly, they simply put a ton of work into the engine.  WoW's pretty damn polished.  You only ever find bugs or performance issues in a few select places.

Bugs?  Shartuul's Transporter and a few Netherwing Dailies spring to mind as having obvious, persistent, and annoying bugs.  Other than that, they tend to be exceedingly rare.

Performance?  The filter they slapped on the phasing effect for the Sunwell portal daily gives me some issues.  Dunno about anybody else.

That's what it really boils down to.  Polish.  It's not that other studios aren't capable of the same level of polish.  It's that the resources simply aren't available to others.  Blizzard is larger by a factor of five or six than the biggest independent MMORPG studio.  It also has a very high level of operational freedom and a lot of financial resources available.  If a studio is willing to invest in scale, it can match that kind of polish.  Turbine and LotRO is a good example.  If they want to stay small, their results might be less than optimal.  If you want to look at some of the potential downsides of small and nimble, look at Funcom and AoC's launch.

The guys at blizzard are some of the best gaming programmers, garphists ... in the gaming industry. Sure aint no shiny graphics but these guys know what they are doing. You might not like blizzard but you have to admit that these guys are good (look at gw, a couple of these guys run away and they make the one of the only non subscription / micro payments games)

if other game companys could learn patience and polish techniques like blizzard ok thier pockets might be empty approaching launch day but us gamers would have a better selection of quality mmo's to play and those companys would hopefully make a good profit which = more exp packs and more games.

blizzard is not perfect but they could teach other companys a thing or 2 :)

IMO more games that are polished and not rushed = more people playing and less posting whines :D although i do enjoy reading some whines and QQ threads they  make me smile.

Come on we all know why it loads so fast, WoW is one line of code,

    printf("Christ I SUCK!);

    See this is why!

I am so good, I backstabbed your face!
