Buddy keys now available
We have now opened the first part of the Buddy key program for Age of Conan! Everybody who has purchased a Collector’s Edition can now invite up to five friends, who can try the game for seven days without purchasing a retail box.
The invitation process is easy. You need to log-in to your account pages (link to https://register.ageofconan.com), and choose “Buddy program”. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then write a personal message to your friends if you so desire.
We recommend that you lend your install DVDs to your buddy to get him or her ready to play as fast as possible. Alternatively your buddy will be offered a $2,99/€2,99 client download with 3 additional days of playtime to cover the download time.
While this offer is only for Collector’s Edition accounts for now, we will soon open up for the Buddy key found in the standard retail box as well.
let me just say before the haters get in here. That download fee is compensated by the extra 3 days playtime. Download for $3 for 10 days playtime, or lend install cd's for 7 days playtime - pretty fair imo. Especially considering the size of the download.
Just had to ask one point here....what other games charge ppl for the trial? I have done a few trials in my day n never been charged by any other unless I decide to sub. Shouldn't a free trial be just that...free?
Is AoC that good a game that we all have to complain about such lame things like this now? i mean come on a miniscule fee for 3 extra days, what a scam lol. you would have though people wouldn't need to look so hard to find something to complain about if the game was as bad as some say lol!

This is not the point, and you know it.
Right because your concern is everyone's . Frankly I could care less I had to pay 50$ to beta , They can pay 3$.

Neither will we miss Funcom when it goes out of business!
I think they are going to have a hard time selling hyped games next time. The Secret World is probably going to be scrapped. AoC for 360 will probably never see the light of the day. Can you imagine what xbox users would say to this buggy mess. Oh and they have to explain this to all the angry parents with crying kids.. haha.
Funcom will merge the fools who pay 3€ into their "accounts created" and "games sold" statistics. So very soon Funcom will say that server pops are on the rise, 1.250.000 accounts created etc.
Its all about having individual accounts giving even a tiny amount of money to Funcom so they can boost their stats.
Wait a minute. You get a buddy key and have to pay to use it if you don't have the discs? Seriously?? Holy crap, if that's the case, I'm floored. Never seen that before in any MMO.
$3.00 or $50.00 to try the game
pick your poison
$3 bus ride or $50 cab to same location.
Game is the biggest mmo on your hard drive, its gonna cost someone time to get it there - you have to pay the price of a cup of coffee to get it.
Talk about covering the cost of bandwidth.
Remember when IGN charged $5 from their site, FC are doing $3 for the same game to cover costs.
Are u bullshitting me?? I was always told that the whole point of paying 15 bucks a month was to cover their server costs and further implementations of the game.
I agree with the man who said it was just for statistics.
It's extremely fraustrating - I can't bring myself to play a game that everyone says is s*** without a free trial. Unless some kind soul sends me a buddy key I'm afraid funcom will have to scam someone else
Also, you pay for a buddy key you expect to use it, not when funcom decide you can use it. "we cba upgrading the servers so we'll wait for enough paying subscribers to ragequit then we'll let you pay $5 to try our game"
-- Note: PlayNC will refuse to allow you access to your account if you forget your password and can't provide a scanned image of the product key for the first product you purchased..... LOL
ya, seems kind of weird. This week i downloaded DAoC, Shrouded Islands, Catacombs, and Trials of Ascension for free, and got a 14 day free trial, and that game has hardly anyone playing it to support the cost of the servers...
Thats just one example, it is pretty common to have many options for client downloads some of which are always free.
I think they are banking on the fact that the people who spent the money on CE don't have many friends to loan their disks too, so anyone giving buddy keys over the internet will have to pay to play.
10 Days is bare minimum to make a decision on an MMO with any depth, 7 days you won't really have a good gauge of it, so they'll end up paying the first months sub just to give it an honest evaluation.
Also, with all the increased account activity, hopfully the account servers don't have problems and people are able to cancel.

3$ for 10 day trial is crazy. Funcom are nothing but scam artists. They charged 5$ for the early access and there download servers were so sucky that it took 3 days to download and on top of that they released the boxes 3 days early( if they wouldve let us know they were ding that then there wouldve been no need to struggle with their shitty download). Funcom is doing a great job or making a laughing stock of themselves.
You do realize the reason you might of had problems with the download don't you ? Secondly you might want to get used to paying for downloads , in the near future we might all be paying by the bit to dl stuff all over the interwebz.
If you pay 50 bucks for a game you have to pay 3 bucks again just to download what you just payed 50 bucks for. Thats the dumbest thing i have ever heard. If people were smart they would just download the game from some torrent and use there key.
Are Funcom really so cheap that they have to charge people money to try there free trial? Its great they offer more free days, but if you hate it after playing it for only one or two days, you kind of wasted your money. Thats the whole point of a free trial.
It doesnt matter if it costs 3 dollars or 1 cent, no other company charges for free trials, its just wrong. Funcom are one of the worst gaming companys going, I hope they go bust, I really do.
If you can look at this with some "Funcom" logic perhaps it will make more sense. The said keys are to be given to your "buddy", hence the name "buddy key." No where in their announcement do they say anything about a "Free Trial". That being said it would be fair to assume that "Funcom" expects you to, at the very least, know the person you are giving your key to. You know, it's your "Buddy." Someone you would feel comfortable loaning your disks to even if you had to mail them for a week or so,"your buddy." Now, if it's not your buddy and your just giving out a free trial, Funcom wants a piece of it, $3 to be exact. This is how Funcom thinks ........ anyone here that is suprised should check out Funcom a little better. This is the kind of stuff that they do. Period. You know, I no longer dislike AoC. Pretty indifferent about the game in general. I was in the Beta program and saw nothing that impressed me enough to buy it. I'm sure it will eventually straighten itself out. Funcom on the other hand, tops my list of "Shit" companies. If I saw Gaute in public I would really have to hold back walking up to him, whipping out my shit, and pissing on him. No, really ....... pissing right down the side of his leg. I'm sure I would catch a charge and it wouldn't look good on a resume', but, the thoughts would be there. Funcom is the "SHIT COMPANY" in the MMO world. Wow, don't believe I actually typed that in. I do realise the vulgarity of the above statement and would like to apologize to anyone offended. That is just exactly how I feel about "Funcom." See, I've got this lying thing ....... especially when someone lies for financial gain .......really irks me.

I really did hope that this game could be great, it had an awesome opportunity to be one of my favorites for years. Too bad it is run by, as you describe it, a shit company. I was fooled in the beginning, but with absolutely no sign this far in of changing their ways then I have lost all hope for this game. Now I could care less if everything is fixed and implemented and becomes the best thing ever made. I will never buy this game or a product made by FC ever again.
The sad thing is though, reading many of the responses, this company will survive, if not become one of the top if it is supported by the idiots who think it's alright that they're being charged in every single opportunity FC can charge them. Does anyone responding get that it isn't the amount of the cost, but the fact that there is a cost in itself? Do you guys not realize that this has been happening since OB? I can forgive a company who takes advantage once in a while, but when their ultimate goal is shown right in my face then I'll tell them to f*ck off and move on to the next area for entertainment. At least we still have some of the good companies to fall back to... but the breed is slowly dieing. Appreciate them while we still have them, folks.
I officially surrender, trolls The game may not be as bad as you all describe it, but the company running it most certainly is. I'm off to find better sources for entertainment... and no longer pretend that FC will change it's ways.
A mmo without a downloadable trial, I hope funcom knows some people wont even buy a game untill they dabble in it a bit. Sounds like a pretty cool game even with the lacking content and bugs, Id love to give it a try but there's no trial. Plus if you have a buddy key you still have to pay...

Why FC with it's supposed huge success of AoC need to charge for bandwidth to d/l a game? After all many other games that are less successful don't charge.
I don't think it is really a matter of how much...it is more a matter of something that is meant to sway future subscribers. Why nail them for $3 when they should give it for free, possibly gaining a new customer in the meantime. This obviously should not be called a free trial...it should be called a paid trial.
And those who say that $3 is gonna get you an extra 3 days play...whoopidy doo...Many popular MMOs give you 10-30 days free...including d/l.
Tho I don't actually play the game anymore, I was going to send out some of my buddy keys to on-line friends of mine that requested it. When I mentioned the $3 d/l fee...they said forget it, they didn't feel it was worth it to them to get charged for a free trial.

I can totally understand where your coming from.
Yes other companies give a free trial. Guild Wars let you try for just 3 days and just the arena's. That game comes in at 1.9gb. AoC is like 27GB thats nearly 10gb more than Vanguard. Same reason IGN who handled their beta charged $5 for the service, FC are doing this themselves and Charging $2.99.
At the end of the day its still smaller fee than the box price itself.
Buddy Keys were also marketed as something that would come after release. Yes I didnt expect them to charge for it, but I can understand the reason why.
Funcom has to charge. The game is going down hill fast. Its fun until just past 45+. Just read the forums. The US and EU and you expect some people to be unhappy but OMG there are so many. See the game it self it a blast but you level way to fast and there is no end content. Funcom lmao .. instead of fixing PVP, adding content like everyone was asking keeps fixing ..well crap. They keep nerfing toons left and right.
Now before you go spending $50 go look up some old vidoes, read some of the thigns FUNCOM has even said what to expect at the launch then read lmao what FUNCOM said just a few weeks ago. They have lied there socks off. Oh there is no phone # you can call if you EVER need help or why you get charged 45cents or what ever it is extra every month. Look at all the people and some really asking nicely .. yet Funcom wont talk to them. So like I said they HAVE to charge you. They want the money.
This game needs a good 6 months. I was there before beta and after and if you have been in a closed beta thats just where this game is. And now when you read the forums you read "merge the servers"

You're essentially paying for using their DL service , Have a freind with a game disc ,there's no fee.

Yes FCs innovative MMO. Pay to d/l a free trial. Come on get a grip FC and do something right with this game for once.

The worst thing is that if you are a casual player you will probably barely get out of Tortage during these 7-10 days.
3€ for Tortage... hehe... seems like you pay for a demo!
