should rs have free speech? (removal of rule 1)

sonicwhipsonicwhip Member UncommonPosts: 117

hello. sometimes it seems that no matter what type of conversation i get into with a clan some pmod will find some absurd reason to mute me and build up my black marks, so this leads me to think why keep playing if i am going to be perm muted some where in the near future? over the few months jagex has lost a fraction of there players due to heavy mutes and bans.

after reading the forums i found a reason not to quit i heard of a feature still being developed by jagex called "degrading black mark system" meaning offences on your account will go away over time with good behavior.

so my question is..do you think rule 1 should be removed and players be allowed to say whatever the hell they want to in game (bad words, racism, sexuality, drugs, crime, hate, etc)

with doing this rs will be a way better game imo and im sure jagex will have way more players if this ever happens, plus im pretty sure nothing bad will happen since mainly the majority of mmorpgs do not have speech restrictions.

Absolutely not, RS has many many players under the age of 16 that don't need to be immersed in a game full of "bad words, racism, sexuality, drugs, crime, hate, etc," as you put it. When Jagex made a 13 or under version of the game their subs increased 40% which means parents will let more of their children play if they can block out all of the offensive content.

Ages 14-16 don't need to be around that language either IMO and even though I don't play RS I would be happy to tell me friends young children about it because RS is a great game to break young kids into the world of MMORPGS.

personally, i applaud jagex. if you can't control your mouth you don't need to talk in a game that kids play.

RS is a free game so you should see it as a privilege to play. There is NO in game situation that warrant the use of the words you mentioned.

Im sure jagex would rather have less players, than a bunch of foul mouthed, ill-mannered, keyboard thugs around.

    GJ Jagex!!!

Actually its the opposite now that they are cracking down on the language. Like I stated above they have had their subscriptions increase by 40% since they made the 13 and under feature.

You know it is quite funny about Jagex, most other mmorpgs do not have a strict chat filter, but yet Runescape does and has more flaming, swearing and spamming than any other game out there. It has the single most worst community because it is mostly made up of little potty mouthed kiddos who have nothing beter to do than walk around trying to mispell  swear words to get around the chat filter. If Jagex was truely cracking down on this they would have to ban most of their players, so that is obviously not the case. You cannot log into any world on that game for any amount of time without seeing mispelled words, insults and spam.  I disagree that their chat filter helps anything. In the many years i have played that game I have seen it go further and further downhill in that dept.  It has a poor atmosphere and a poor community and everything Jagex has done has done nothing to improve that.  In that game you have 12 year olds dating 53 year old truck drivers, you have more sexually expicit chat than I have seen in any other mmorpg that I have played, You have kids walking around talking about their wankers and Jagex has not banned any of them. I strongly disagree that their chat filter is needed with what they have going on with it compared to other games that  have 100 x time community without one. It is all about customer service, Jagex does not know the meaning of that so they abviously do not know how to provide a spam free game with a good community.

Thats nothing tbh. Maybe they'd consider it if it was 200k. But they woudn't no gaming company would allow those things.

Either way people are going to curse with or without the chat filter. Runescape has scared away most of the mature players of the game, so of course there is going to be kids saying curse words for the first time in there life because they think that makes them big. I have been followed by a level 3 that cursed like crazy for no reason at all. Thats just how poor the community has gotten.

Meh.... if you don't like the moderation policies, go play another game.

Free speech is an illusion, there is always limitations on speech no matter where you are, and gaming worlds are no different.

Once again I have to explain that people can say what they think about the game and most have gone to other games, but that doesn't mean that they can't complain about it. And your probably right. Everywhere you go there will probably be a speech limitation. Even if rs did let free speech happen it wouldn't really make up for anything. They made mistakes and people left permanantly unless they bring back the wildy and other things, which is impossible seeing as how they don't want to admit their mistakes.

im sure it could be like traditional mmo's were free speech is there but you can choose to turn on an optional filter if you dont want to hear the bad language.

well, the have 163 worlds and the max in each is 2000 players so that equals 326,000 players and i see about 142k daily everytime i get on so if they we're to have 200,000 more players runescape would overload,as chatango did because of their popularity, and if runescape would count accounts made with different IP adresses they would have about 70 million accounts made in the most, alot of players make more than one account incase they get banned and dont have to go over tutorial, and yes i guess about 20,000 players will be added if a free speech chat was done....but probably  about 50,000 people would quit if it did,but the chat filter doesnt really do anything,it is really depressing to watch kids under the age of 12 spell curse words to get through the chat filter though, its there for a reason but their players are desperate enough to get through it

i honestly doubt that anybody would quit just because of free speech..ignore list ftw?

    To the OP:

It seems to me that only a misogynist racist would even bother to ask the question.   What is the purpose of including the language you want in the game?  Does it enhance gameplay?   Or, do you just like having a foul mouth behind the anonymity of the Internet?

The target market today, is for early teens. Jagex tried to turn itself into a focus group, for a younger audience. They are actually turning rs into a kiddy toon town happy land.

No devloping teen wants to be associated with kiddy happy runescape of today.   This spits in the face of what made Rune Scape great.

They got big because it was easy to play on any platform and the game itself was open ended.

They impvoved by,  introducing a few charecters and new quests you cannot you replace the drive of what once was.

What once was player vs player. Became wildy to pvp. now its no more pvp. Some of you cheer it on, wait till they take something of yours.

you are selfish only because you are happy with the momment.

i know this is off-topic but i just need to post this)

    Kebbit Risotto

    (Serves 4)

    • 1 cup arborio (medium grain) rice
    • 1 small can concentrated cream of mushroom soup (Campbells or similar)
    • 3/4 pint of chicken stock
    • 4 fl oz milk
    • 2 onions, sliced and fried
    • 1 roast kebbit (or 4 cooked chicken legs if you can't find kebbit) meat chopped into chunks with bones removed
    • herbs and seasoning to taste

Place all in a large casserole dish in a preheated 400 °F (200 °C or Gas Mark 6) oven for 20 minutes with a lid on. Take out and stir (Careful, it's hot and you might need to ask for assistance). Place back in for 20 minutes. Pick the correct sandwich from the Sandwich Lady's selection, eat sandwich. Take out dish from oven and stir again, it should be getting quite thick and creamy. Place back in for 10 minutes. Remove from oven.

    Stir before serving.

lmao i bet some people tried that (mainly zezima..LOL)

Actually it might enhance gameplay. There were many times were I would try and say something that wasn't even close to a cuss word and ******** would come out because of the strict chat filter. This was actually a pretty good idea of being able to switch the filter on and off. Great idea, if only jagex listened to them.

I think RS should keep its rule 1

It's a family oriented game pretty much, and pointed toward a younger audience as a "beginning MMO"

I like it the way it is ^_^

Your right. If jagex aimed for teen ages they didn't hit the mark. They went too low with practically taking all risk out of the game. They probably tell themselves that they did it for the customers. Nothing they have done has been for the customers. Not the trade limit, not the item loaning, and especially not the wildy. BTW I think you might have wanted to say that certain people are happy with rs because jagex hasn't ruined whatever part of the game they like. So in a way they might be selfish for protecting rs just because they're happy with their part of the game. I don't know. I confused myself lol.
