I only play a MMO for a few months (1, 2.. ) so wellcome to my world.  I often never play to the high level, and change to other game, somethimes a singleplayer game, or something else.

But mmos has something: people, that is something you miss in singleplayer games or reading books.

I think that's the first time I've read a "I'm quitting" forum post directed at quitting a forum within an MMORPG site.

With that said, can I have your stuff?

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

Yes..it would be quite pointles if someone like you would post "I am quiting" ...

But when outstanding community member like Elkial says he is quitting. Somebody who wrote more constructive posts text, than some of gamers here read in their whole life (including school material)

But back on topic.  Perhaps that's why these forums get so angry and mean sometimes. Because people do associate too much passion with games, and make it all too personal.

    Greetings Elikal and all,

I know the forums can get a bit... yeah... We're working on that though. I know I just came on board, but I already have several ideas on community building and forum improvement. Will they work? Maybe, maybe not. Hopefully. First of all in the near future I'll be greatly increasing the moderator pool. Beyond that, it's a surprise. :)

One thing though I've definitely noticed in my time back. A lot of the forum reform is going to have to start with you guys. Use the Report Post tool, which a LOT of you do, if you see someone flaming, trolling, just being a general asshat, etc.

Now, granted, a lot of you do report those posts, and that's great... The problem comes when after you report them for some reason you feel the need to reply to them with something like "HAHAHA!!! I just reported your dumbass troll bastard self!!!" At which point you've sunk to their level, they'll report your post as well, and you'll receive a warning/bad just like the other.

Best policy, don't feed the trolls, report the post and move on.

If you have any questions or concerns about the forums, please don't hesitate to send em my way at community@mmorpg.com.

If you are allowed to love a country, I don't see why you aren't not allowed to love a game, or a forum.

Most games are likeable, and you can be proud of then. Like most people seems proud of WoW, and like stuff like the "I AM MURLOC".

Is about how something make you feel.

Once people will start to make humanoids robots ready to make sex (sexbots), I bet some people will fall in love with then. Much like the main character in Chobits.

Well, I think what we have here is really about computer technology in general. As computers and the technology that goes with it, come down in price, more people have access to this technology. This has now spilled over to the computer gaming world, which was usually the domain of  the more geek-ish or technological person.

Combine that, with the success that WoW had in bringing computer gaming into the main stream,  Wal-Mart selling cheap computers that could run that said game. We've end up with a flood of new gamers who are now bored and looking for something new to try. So where do they go for advice and information, here of course.

It's just too bad, that with this influx of new people, we also end up with immature, disrespectful, ignorant and sometimes just plain stupid people. And it's not just this site, but almost any web site you visit you see them.

Sorry to say, just like real life.

A simple rule to remember, people are people and that's all there is to it. A few things to keep in mind, forums of any kind provides a captive audience, which makes for a great breeding ground for people to express their ideas under the safety of the internet. In other words while on the net people feel a sense of anonymity. Like alcohol, anonymity can be the elixir of self-doubt and inhibition.

While online people can take on any persona they like, however your words and how you articulate them can give you away. With a little experience you can determine who is objective, subjective, absurd and irrational. These 'perspectives' can vary from any number of ideological, cultural, political or philosophical beliefs.

The best rule of thumb while on the net or in real life is simply to be yourself. The internet is a wonderful invention that brings a lot of people together, but like anything else it has the potential to bring out the worst in people. You can't let the few ruin it for the many.

Yea most people just attack the person writing instead of the idea. I have been attacked a bunch of times. Its childish and pointless. I mean what kind of person goes out of his free time to get on a computer to make fun of someone online? Someone who has nothing better to do. All I gotta say is either talk about the topic or don't bother posting. If you post something that attacks the writer you are lowering yourself to all the trolls and 12 yr olds level in these forums. You are no better.

The way we react to things is highly subjective.  For example; in this thread I got a laugh from Puuk's "can I have your stuff" comment while Lobotomist apparantly found it to be in poor taste.  Maybe I'm just easily amused.

But at the same time I tend to agree with what Lobotomist said earlier.

My big problem in relation to these forums is that I'm running out of things to say.  In fact, everything I really want to say about MMORPGs I've already said at least 50 times.  With mmorpgs so stagnate and actually devolving instead of evolving, what the heck are we supposed to talk about?  Is it any wonder that we get bitchy and turn on each other?

    -------------------------------------------------

"There's a new game in development"

"Is it the same ol' crap again"

"Yes, but with even less of a persistant world and even more linear and even more dumbed down."

    "....woot...?"

    "God this sucks"

    "U suck!"

    "No, your mother sucks me"

    "...I'm so bored..."

    -----------------------------------------

If personal attacks are increasing on these boards I think in large part it's a symptom of our frustration with the industry.

There are some good mmos out there, it's just that some players are overly critical and fickle.  Some of you will NEVER be happy with ANY future mmo.  You should do us a favor and take up another hobby so the rest of us can enjoy ours.

    MMO's are dead

When only AA MMO coming out in 2 years from now is WAR , that is more of glorified battleground than virtual world. And AION that is nothing more than WOW the Lineage version.
What should we write about ?
The rest of quasi waporeware/garage projects ? Or Multiplayer xbox titles ? Instanced shooters ?
When best thing on the horisont is Diablo 3 , that is not really MMO ....

Elikal , mate ... you can leave in peace. Time of MMOs is over

For me this is highly regrettable, but necessary. I enjoyed and took part in gaming forums for many years, and was active here for the last 2+ years. For me MMOs are hobby and part of my life for almost 5 years now, and as someone who is greatly interested in the ongoings of MMOs I greatly enjoyed discussing about MMOs with others. I personally never minded if people attacked my opinion. I enjoy a good controversy about anything.
But the mood shifted. It began in the offiicial MMO games forums, and now it has dragged down this once good forum, as well. I remember well that it used to be different once, that people were able to talk about MMOs without getting attacked personally. I dunno what caused this changes, but I watch it for a long time now, and for a long while MMORPG.com was relatively free of this. I will never understand this mental framework, where people are suspected, name called and ridiculed. When I see someone with whose opinion I don't agree, I give him at least so much credit as to presume his point is geniune, and not just made off for whatever reason, and I argue over his points, not his person, his grammer, his suspected evil motivations or whatever.
I never expected to be touched with silk gloves in a forum,  I attack controverse points as much as any guy, and its okay to see my points attacked likewise. What I dont understand is the motivation to personally attack someone, simply because I dont share his opinion. And unfortunate the overall mood here changed. Sure, there are some good and fair people here. But the amount of name calling, slandering, ridiculing, suspect and whatever respectless behavior has spread so far here, it makes the atmosphere like a piosonous swamp, often. MMORPG.com was a community I used to feel well with, a place I went to daily and was always looking forward to exchange views, opinions and experiences with. But these days it seems most people cant stand to hear another opinion without calling someone fanboi, troll, drama queen or iliterate these day. I dunno, what happend to you guys? Where did the spirit of chiralry go, where people abstain from mockery and name calling, no matter how hard you attacked his points, but not his PERSON?
Unfortunatly this change reflects the changes in MMOs themselves. Where once MMO playing was only something for a few, now as it became mass market, the aggression level, the sheer amount of name calling and slandering in MMOs has risen dramatically over the last 2 years. And this is unfortunately reflected in this forum now, too. The old Confucian idea that you should treat the next person as you want to be treated is alas forgotten in our days. I dont blame gamers in particular - the loss of personal respect and the desire to degrade the person with another opinion is the trend of our days. But as someone who just posts his honest opinion, when a forum has reached a point that I think to censor myself in order to prevent personal attacks, I see the only way to leave. It is regrettable, because I enjoy debating about MMOs, and for a long time I thought not to "let them win over this place" and tried to stay on the path of sincerity. But at some point the battlefield changed, and right now I dont see there is anything to win here, anymore and the frustration outweights the joy of discussion. People stopped to listen to each other. They stopped to believe the opinion of the other are sincere and geniune. There are a few names, who especially contributed to the devolution of this forum, people you will know, who are all too ready to call someone troll or hateboi or fanboi. People who dont even start to work with your points, but go straight to your personality. People who will not even have so much decency to abstain for attacking your person, when you were already bashed by a dozen others, but like hyenas must bite into the downtrodden.
For me, thats the ultimate cowardice. Sitting safely behind their desk anonymity, they attack in masses, laugh at those who have already been ridiculed by others and not even have the decency to do so in a one VS one level. There was a time when I did not want to give in to such people, who elegantly hide behind smartass comments and forum anonymity (calling someone a troll IS trolling btw!), but there comes a point when the atmosphere is so poisoned, that there is nothing to gain anymore. So I take my leave from this place, and return to passive watcher, for the sake of infos. It is regrettable for me, but those with destructive personalities as so often in history, have successfully ruined another place. Congratulations to your great accomplishment. The real tragedy lies in their own ignorance, that they will never see themselves as they are, and even laugh about their own folly. I just defy to be the whetstone for other people's inferiority complex any longer. Maybe the mods and those left with decency someday find the strength for a purification of this place, but my personal time is too valuable to spent it in a place like this for the time being, so do the only thing I can. I go.

I respect people like you. *Salutes*

Yea, the crowd can be a bit rough a lot of the time, but the way you pointed it out hit the nail on the head. Some people choose to deal with it, and some don't. There's nothing wrong with taking a stand about anything you feel strongly about. You've put your "time" in brotha, keep it real. Maybe find something a little less laid back than here that will give you what you need =)

Elikal, you seem like a nice person and I have no doubt we could sit and have a beer and just "shoot the shit". However you are way to sensitive, your expectations are a bit too high in some cases and you don't seem to get that gaming forums tend to run the spectrum of people, good, bad, smart, dumb, and what have you.

OP, I don't know if you're still reading this, but I want to run with what Kunou said.

Why leave when you want to see things shaping up? Leaving isn't going to help or fix anything. You've obviously put some time into posting here, so why just drop it all?

Instead, I think you should stay and help monitor the boards on your own time. It will let you read things, some of which can be very good, and if you see trolls or people being nasty, all you have to do is report them and go on your way. Trust me when I say that some people are exceptionally dense and nothing you say will ever get through. In those cases, just not wasting your breath and clicking to report them is the best thing.

Plus, the response time to getting reported posts pulled down is really fast

So instead of leaving, how about helping to clean things up?

Guess your last thread in the WAR forum was the last straw that made you take this decision. I will really miss your posts, if you really leave. I hope you will reconsider your decision. You are one of the very few that put some thought on what they write.

People on WAR forum are very fanatic about the game, mostly are ex DAoC players and they just *worship* Mythic, so any slight criticism is taken as a personal attack and they scream troll at the top of their lungs

I always thought your posts about AoC were pretty spot on. Despite a large force of AoC fanboys you kept at it and in the end, were proven right along with everyone else about the real sorry state of the game. Since then though you seem to have changed, probably just got burned one too many times with bad mmos, and you are overly critical and jumping the gun on everything else without a real valid reason. You are stuck in that AoC mindset. People naturally react to you being overly critical and instead of looking to yourself for fault, you put all of mmorpg.com to blame for the reaction.

A break would do you good to get back to where you were, giving things a fair chance and waiting for evidence before crucifying it.
