I just cancelled my WoW account, so I have an extra $15 a month to throw away.
I've played WoW, EQ2, Vanguard, Age of Conan, and pretty much every other gear-centric grind-fest derived from Everquest, and I'm sick of them. I want something different.
I'm having fun with City of Heroes, mostly because it's not set in yet another generic fantasy world, but also because character advancement doesn't revolve around getting a slightly-less-crappy rusty iron butter knife as punishment payment for killing thirty diseased muskrats. I can also make characters with more interesting concepts than "Dwarf Warrior."
I'm not entirely opposed to fantasy settings, so long as the game mechanics aren't the same thing I've already played a hundred times. I'm also not going to jump on a game just because it's not fantasy, since a lot of sci-fi and other settings still fall into the same mold.
What's out there that's actually different?

Try playing EVE Online. Make sure b4 you play you do good research on it. Its a great snadbox game with enough complexity and wonder to keep you going. I was frustrated with it at 1st, but once you get going it's a great game. Make sure you ask 1000's of questions Ppl are there to help! I'll take this game way over many out there right now.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD
lmao! I totally agree with your characterization of EQ2 clones. I can't stand "go and collect 10 n" missions. I don't know what to do either. I keep hearing about EVE but it's only good if you get into a good (guild) corporation. I'd be very interested in these responses too.
