Edited: the last answer is just supposed to say no! oops
I played the trial just before the game went down, and I liked it alot I plan to play Ryzom when it starts back up and I am already interested in finding a guild too:)
I didn't play the game much, or for very long. I tried it out after the SWG:NGE thing. I liked it SoR and was sad to see it shut down. Now that it is coming back, I will support the game.

i don't really consider myself a returning "player" as i never got off the noob island - spent about a month there playing with crafting - but i'm ready to move now!
i do hope for a character wipe so everyone gets to start fresh but it wouldn't put me off if this didn't happen
do have issues with PVP though - just drop it completely is my vote
Which sounds a bit "Germanic" when spoke I would think. (depending on regional differences)
Promised myself that if it makes another go-around I would give it a try.
thats like saying a scottish person sounds english, which they dont.
Geez, people Arni is from Austria, right. But an Austrian German Accent is NOT that different from a real German one, and not very hard to simulate I must know, ´cause I´m German and spent some time in Austria

The PvP in Ryzom is really PvE player friendly.
There are duels but of course you can decline and there are no penalities if you get rezzed and your opponent can do that after he takes you down.
And there is a PvP flag. But it is each players choice to turn it on or off. I believe it works by faction but I've never bothered with it. If it is popular, I've never noticed it going on although I have heard on chat of groups of players attacking the other faction in their meeting places.
There really are just 4 connected PvP zones down in the Prime Roots but they are 4 less than max zones ( there are 4 max Prime Root zones ). The zones are PvP by faction -- not sure how neutral works there though. And I've only seen 1 PC attack someone of the other faction in those zones. Personally I would like to get rid of PvP zones altogether but it is a small part of Ryzom.
The real PvP in Ryzom is the Outpost Battles which are guild vs guild. Each player entering an area where an OP battle is taking place has the option of choosing attack, defend, or neutral. The battles are 2 hours long but only last that long if good and close.
The English server had mainly broken down into alliances by faction. However, there were some alliance breaks and even some players/ guilds fighting for the opposing faction because of the politics. There were also some mercenaries who had to be bought to fight for a side -- although really only 1 quite loud merc and he did seem to settle on a side toward the end.
The benefits of a guild owning an Outpost are somewhat nice, there are crafting recipes that require mats generated by Outposts and tools made with these mats are required to make boosted eqipment which can have up to a 20% boost but it is only a 5% chance of getting a boost.
Personally other than buying a less than optimal boosted item on the market, I've never gotten into boosted equipment although I'm getting near to being able to use em and have been offered a few OP mats by guilds in the alliance I support. Ryzom is very playable without boosted equip and it takes quite long to really get enough mats to get a complete set of boosted uber equipment ( like 1+ year ).
The only negative from all of this is that some Boss's are camped pretty much. As are some Supreme mat locations but there are 4 locations, 1 in each zone, for each Q250 dug mat.
I'm personally a PvE player myself. But I love a good OP battle. The individual battles can be intense lasting 10 minutes or more before 1 side takes the other out. A side can be losing and then recover. Of course it comes down to mainly numbers but not completely. And well formed teams and discipline make a big difference.
As for crafting, it is complex. And digging mats is a real art unlike most games.

Actually the zone PvP is Guild vs. Guild. But if members of different guilds team together, their ability to attack each other is negated.

i messed around on the trial island for about a month right b4 ryzom's first monetary crisis when they shut off account upgrading I can't wait to play this again

I know.. boohoo you'd have to start from 0 too. That's the only argument for not doing a wipe, so keep your "oh but the world is already built, a new one would destroy the game" excuses to yourself and admit that you don't want to start from a clean slate.
Sorry to hear that radomt, there's no real advantage of a wipe for you as experienced players would quickly outlevel you.
Personally I wouldn't mind a wipe even with all the problems I know it would cause. However I could list many reasons why a wipe would be a disaster and actually make it harder for a newbie to get a fresh feel of the game.
I played Ryzom for 3 months when it first came out and returned about 2 years later. Then I played with new characters in a fresh civilization for me. The fact that there were uber players and established guilds did not ruin the fresh feel for me at all.
do have issues with PVP though - just drop it completely is my vote
I'm generally not a pvp fan - mainly because of the way it has been implemented in most mmos. While pvp is intended to provide players with more challenging opponents than pre-programmed and completely predictable mobs, it also often presents mmociopaths with opportunities to feel good about their tiny appendages by being total %&cktards.
Hence ganking, corpse camping, etc. etc.
But I think Ryzom's pvp is pretty good. The only "free" pvp is in the area that has the really nice resources. I never got up to harvesting there so I don't know how players tend to behave.
Putting that one zone aside, you can play and fully enjoy Ryzom without ever having anything to do with pvp. That choice is entirely in the hands of players.
Though personally, I liked the outpost pvp. It's fun, good, friendly competition.

Whether I come back to it or not depends on many factors.
1. If I can get my old character back.
2. The intentions of the new owners.
3. The way it seems the game might be developed.
4. The cost.
5. Whether the PvP rot is endemic or not at reboot.
So we shall see.
