WAR could save or destroy?

IMO WAR is a huge evolutionary step in the right direction. Instead of concentrating on zomg graphics and fixing mechanics that aren't broken (say combat) WAR's devs decided to go through established but obviously lacking MMO systems and improve them as far as they can go.

Is it a revolution? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. It is possible that all the individual advancements may push it into the "next stage" category. Or maybe not. We shall see.

In any case, it is clearly a step forward into making MMOs what they ultimately should be.

    - huge emphasis on group play but in a very "soft" way

    - dynamic world

    - emphasis on endgame.. from the very beginning

    - numerous lateral advancement schemes

    - information tracking systems extending beyond the scope of the client

We'll see how it all works when put together, but so far the signs are good. No one in his right mind would think that it is going to be THE ultimate in MMOs for we should wait at least a decade till the genre form finally crystallizes. However it IS a step forward... which is a fantastic thing in itself when taking into account that for the past 5 years the industry's been hell bent on walking backwards with each new MMO.

    /add

However what I fear in case WAR gets really popular is the following: The majority of developers are completely clueless on what makes a great game. A case in point is WoW and a slew of games that all relied on linear gameplay, grind and raid cause their devs deduced (wrongly) that this is what made WoW a success. I fear that we'll see a long lull in MMO development after WAR because them damn suits will conclude that PvP is the IT and won't be able to see what made  WAR really great. (hypotetically ofc)

I might be overly pessimistic but there is a bright star on the horizon as well. Spore. If it does great then we'll have a fantastic atmosphere for the creation of truly great MMORPGs. Spore's sandbox and freeform  gameplay combined with WAR's multiplayer and group mechanics = absolute WIN.

Wow lol thats some crazy amount of ppl , do you have server lag with that many?? like it take 10 sec to cast a skill??

No That was from Mythic`s other game DAOC.  Zerg like these were common, so this is what you can expect in WAR.

MMORPG players are looking for different things and different games.

It's obvious now, with the success of WoW, that the majority is looking for a solo friendly game, that the casual player can log onto, and make progress, and some of those players will stick around to raid after they finish leveling. So, I'm sure that's going to be the majority of MMORPGs that are releases, solo friendly casual games that cater to this huge market.

Then there are the players that want something more involved, like SWG pre-NGE or EVE, more of a sandbox game. This is a very niche market, and we may see some successful games in this category released, since EVE at least is successful in terms of subscription numbers and making a profit.

Then there's the PvP crowd, and  a subset of that crowd likes the RvR style game, like DAoC. WAR is catering to this crowd, and I think it will be popular. Probably it will be more popular than the sandbox game, but less popular than the casual solo friendly game like WoW.

Hopefully, we'll see all these types of game s flourish so they can cater to different markets.

War will release as unfinished as AOC because of money pressure from stock and investment folks.

Aren't you informed! Please...tell us more about how much WAR will suck. Because we don't hear that from any other trolls that come to our forums. You are just so god damn new and refreshing. Do you have a newsletter I could subscribe to? I'm just dying to hear more about what you have to say! Thank you...you have really opened my eyes.

WAR will not make or break the industry because they are not trying to. They're not making the next greatest game ever and they're not promising revolutionary totally awesome gameplay that'll move the industry forward. They're making their game, their way, and they're trying to make it as fun as possible. Which is all that matters. There are plenty of other MMOs that will come after WAR to keep the genre going, whether WAR is successful or mega-successful. Doesn't matter. The best thing about WAR is the players generate the hype, not the company, which means the players are really looking forward to one or more things WAR has to offer. That's important, because if Mythic keeps its promises, many people will be happy.

I don't know what you mean by "the right track" but they seem to promote social interaction more than some other games. They don't FORCE you to group, that's the key aspect. You can fight alongside realm-mates without ever having to group (PQs and scenarios are the main examples of this). If that's the right track, then other MMOs after WAR will undoubtedly copy it.

A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Not been excited about an MMO being released like I am since WoW.

Meaningful world pvp. With a graphics engine that is of good quality, will help to create an atmopshere in the game while still allowing the pvp to go on (see AoC for why that is important).

With the seeming failure of AoC I think Mythic need to make 100% sure they deliver a quality product in September to capitalise on Funcoms fuck up. That fuck up should also serve as a warning to what happens to games which are hideously bugged (some are fine but fundamental problems making it unplayable won't be).

If they mess WAR up they will miss such a big oppurtunity, and have failed to take notice of such a big warning that well, it does not seem like something they could do.

In 3 or 4 years we will start to see some new games(may be new gen) i`m definitely waiting for more infos from 38 Studios and Whitewolf/CCP World of Darkness and I really wish for a skill based game towards a level based with a real persistant world.

Might be a lot closer than you think...This game is skilled based and a live persistant PVP world.
