The marketing ploy of releasing this information late is obvious. The game is still crap and has been dummied down by SOE but 6 days playtime won't be enough time to truly get your feet wet so they are hoping to sucker people for a one month subscription until they realize that the game is still unplayable.
I take it you've played the game for more than 5 minutes? If so you're completely entitled to your opinion, otherwise not.
shame soe only let mmorpg know about it when the free months about to end .... i proberly would have given it a try and maybe would ve got back into it .still thier loss .
It's always funny when someone posts something that they want us to believe they know as fact, when it is glaringly wrong.
In fact, not only do I have the original emails, community announcements, but also the interviews with the dev's done on my show that told me about this, the shows that I announce on here every week.
Heck, here's one of the original posts by Ellyra, announcing it.
This just goes to show you that most posts in most forums (ESPECIALLY on these forums, which are almost nothing but ranting and raving) that contain "facts" are the result of what some "heard" from someone else in some other post, or what the poster claims as "fact."
The only fact is, unless you are involved within a community, meaning that you ACTUALLY play the game, then you will miss so many announcements, updates and improvements.
My feeling is that some people tried Vanguard once 8 months ago, or won't try it because SOE is connected with it. Which is at best, juvenile.
Oh well, the game is great, the community is great, and the team making it is great! See you at Fan Faire!

Googa: please man, don't think that because SOE and MMORPG are reminding players about the last few days in their special that somehow they forgot to tell players.
To you players thinking that: do you REALLY believe that SOE sat on this and hid it, just so that they could tell you last minute, to "rip you off?"
Just search on THIS website and you'll see the original announcement.
Just check the VG players site, you'll see the original announcement.
Just try to not be sooooooo empty headed.

Vanguard is 20-30 times the size easily. It has 5 or more dungeons at ANY given level range over 5.
The "zoning" lasts a couple of seconds on the lowest end pcs that can really play it, and is near instant on high end rigs now.
Quests can range from run over to this person, to a multi-week journey across half of the game with very little camp time anywhere along the way.
Crafting is among the best I've seen. Diplomacy is a nice side game (some play it as I do the adventuring portion).
Raiding is fun, engaging, and has tons of promise. Classes each have a roll and a need, there are a few balance issues, but nothing compared to most mmo's.
After the completly shitty launch and the straight out lies from McQuack. Sony really has turned this into the gem that it promised to be two years ago. There really is no way to explain how far above the rest of the MMOs including WoW, EQ2, and EQ it is at the moment. VG you can log on for an hour and get something done, or log on for twelve hours straight for months and never run out of things to. It truely is deserving of the word massive. It is truly beautiful.
My only current complaint is the amount of END END game content. Right now there is about three months of lvl 50 hardcore raiding five days a week content. However this is about to expand in august. Then expand again every couple of months for the forseeable future.
McQuack promised a lot and never delivered, the current team however is rapidly delivering on all of his failed promises. Brad is an excellent idea person, but should never ever be allowed to manage ANYTHING ever again.
What I find interesting is that people are moaning over the fact that they didn't know about it, yet don't stop to think logically for a second. Say that SOE did deliberately not send it to this site. It's ONE website! There are many others out there that had this information ages ago.
Relying on website for all your information is rather...juvenile. This is a great site but (like everything) it isn't perfect. There are bound to be news articles on other websites that aren't on here and vice versa. The point is that I really don't think that you guys are as important as you're making yourselves out to be. I doubt SOE will have *special* rules just for you guys so as to make more money (there really isn't that many of you anyway).

Tbh, I feel the opposite to you. But its all relative. I've played VG since Beta and left last February. I then started playing AOC and felt that that game was more polished and was being handled far better than the VG team can handle their game.
Firstly, I left after realising the empty words of the Producer of VG at the time had made (no, not McQuaid but the guy who's also the Producer of another SOE game) . There was an uproar in December when there was talk about the Isle Of Dawn and how that flies in the face of what they were trying to accomplish with the game. The producer said that they would re-evaluate the idea and come back to the community and talk further. January came and the playerbase soon realised that NOTHING had been discussed, they were going ahead regardless. Don't get me wrong, THEY are the devs and its THEIR game to do with who they please. But devs cannot ask for feedback and then blatantly ignore it when they get it. That's just trying to pacify the playerbase and not actually do anything.
Which is something that FC aren't doing. FC brought in a new community team to "patch" up the communication holes in the forums. This new team also collate all the players suggestions (the list is about 1 1/2 pages long on the forums at the moment). And in fact, some of these suggestions are actually being implemented 2 patches after the list was first created. Now THAT is listening to feedback from your playerbase! Yes the FC team have had to make their own decisions on how the game should develop without consulting the playerbase in the past, but at least FC realised very quickly how not listening to the playerbase can cost them dearly. Yes, FC has its share of issues, it ain't perfect.
Secondly, I left the game because not enough was being done to get the game back on track. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate that only so much can be done in any amount of time. And for that reason I don't solely blame the VG team. I also blame SOE for its' refusal to expand the team or provide extra resources in order to cope with the mammoth task of getting that game back on track.
However, I do applaud the VG team for a number of reasons: The diplomacy "sphere" was innovative, but under developed. The crafting "sphere" is involving but repetitive after a time. Well done to them for (finally) getting permanent flying mounts and the respective quests in place. However, that alone won't bring people back in droves. Especially those who have already gotten to maximum level. Raiding is a step forward, but from what I experienced, its pretty mediocre and lacks lustre, especially regards to performance when theres all the other Raid groups in there with you.
With regards to relative size of the landmasses; Considering the sheer size of the zones in AOC, I'd say that AOC actually has MORE playable and complete landmass than VG has. Its just that in VG you can see a lot of the "zones" from certain vantage points in the game. But, just because you can see it, doesn't mean to say that theres equally the same amount that you can't see.
Incidentally, many of the current team are the very same people who worked for Sigil and Brad McQuaid, this is why I don't call them the SOE team, even though they work for SOE.
Googa: please man, don't think that because SOE and MMORPG are reminding players about the last few days in their special that somehow they forgot to tell players. Understand that not only that, but there were plenty of players like myself talking about it. Also, being that the announcement for free time only touched on RETURNING players, meaning that you had an account before, then you recieved an EMAIL containing this information.
And of course, there was the updates on the website.
And on the official forums.
And in the official SOE podcast.
And on the official SOE boards.
And on some other gaming sites that have "chapters" for different games.
I hope you get the point here. If you were ever interested in this game, and HAD PLAYED it, you would have known. But trust me, don't rely on this site for all your gaming news needs. Save for the occasional review, they do not pursue news from sites, they simply are an active forum community inside of a group of news feeds. I mean, it's fine for what it is...but don't rely on it.
And see, this is how the amazing internet works...the place that you can check on facts within minutes, and have rumors investigated: like a church on a Sunday morning. Gossip is still used by many to "get their news." I have actually talked to the makers of the game several times, and trust me, people are returning, have returned thanks to this offer, and were returning before.

Sorry for breaking the news for you. But this have been discussed in the VG forums here, it have been announced every week day at vgplayers.com. And if you have not opt-out from email from SOE you would have got it that way aswell.
But in the end there is actually no possible way a site like this could have missed it as I assume (and think) that the staff behind and the purpose of mmorpg.com is to be a serious site.
Or, wait,
-Hey guys you saw tha SOE makes a big campaign and letting people play EQ and EQ2 for free.
-Yeah, look at this they will let people play Vanguard for free 30 days aswell.
(After shedding some tears and throwing a fit.) Why, they didn't tell us. *sob* Meh, we are not going to write about it. *whine*

The point is that you've got egg on your face. If you are a returning player you would have gotten an email about the promotion.
I am playing Vanguard from beta till now with a little break in it.
The game state is very stable for me, although after a long online time, like 6 hours or more, I run into some memory problem, posibly caused by a memory leak. I can live with that I hear people saying , its full of bugs, but honestly, I didn't run into one for a long time, while I play several characters.
The graphics are great, the mobs look fantastic, everything is nicely animated, there is rain, snow , sunshine, trees and grass waving in the wind. Your armor and weapons looks amazing detailed. Everything looks already great when you set your graphics to Balanced and textures to medium-high. With that setting I easily get 40-60 FPS at 99,9% of the world on a GTS8800.
There is so much to do, it's overwelming. You can adventure, craft and perform diplomacy all three from lvl 1 to 50 on every char you make. There are so many places you can go to, that you need at least 3 characters to cover it all. Most races have their own starting town an quests and later on you can go and do whatever you like to do. There are small quest and huge long chained quest lines, the Unicorn and Shadowhound mount quests for instance. For crafters there are several ways to go and to specialise in. Crafting is very big in VG and usefull ! There are a lot of people running arround with crafted flawless gear. Crafters need recources and you can specialise in two out of five harvesting skills (fishing is coming). As a harvester you can gather recourses for your own use, or just sell them in the auction hall. Diplomacy is something that needs some more loving I think. Think there is more content needed from lvl 30-50. With diplomacy you can get cities to buff people who visit there. You can get a mount and gear for it. Diplo is greatly needed for the making of APW quest armor, Guild House and hopefully much more in the future.
This game has no instances (APW Raid dungeon is a bit different in that) , so this means that you see people where ever you go and the attitude of the people in VG is great in that respect. Sometimes you are waiting for a named mob to spawn while two other groups stand next to you who like to do the same thing....but the community on VG is so mature, they wait in line. Also general help from people to other people is great which makes this game prety cool to be in.
Well I could go on for some more time, but basicaly this game looks good, has great detail in everything, loads of stuff to do even when you lvl 50. More exciting is the recently added factional system where you gather faction and platium coins to buy armor and mounts for. The upcoming Trial isle , fishing and Galleons and probaly more faction gear is whats coming soon. Think SOE is doing pretty well atm. their support isn't bad either, usualy you get to speak a gm when you have some patience or else you find a response via email.
This game is not an easy game, sometime you just need a lot of patience or luck to get that what you want. Grinding is a big part of the game. if you get a quest to find something on a mob expect to kill at least 20 before you have it etc. So if that ain't scaring you off, you should buy the game or wait a little more when the Trial is available.
For me, VG just isn't my cup of tea. I just find it rather boring lol. I tried a little over a week to see what's changed and honestly, I think my issues with it are just the game just doesn't meet my style. I love the "epicness" in concept of the game - the huge world - the races - the classes - the mounts. However, the way everything comes together doesn't feel "epic". However, I am happy to hear and see that things are shaping up and moving along. Unfortunately, its just not what I'm looking for.
Interestingly enough, I loved LotRO. Not the "epic" MMO I'd prefer, but the storytelling is the best thus far in a MMO outside of the original EQ(I miss old style EQ quests!!!!).
If technical issues were holding you back from VG, I encourage you to give it go. Performance has improved and if an inkling of the game entertained you back then, I'm sure you'll be pleased with it now.

After the completly shitty launch and the straight out lies from McQuack. Sony really has turned this into the gem that it promised to be two years ago.
I doubt SOE will have *special* rules just for you guys so as to make more money (there really isn't that many of you anyway).
lol beau anyone ever told you that you have a tendancy to read things into posts that arnt there . i never said anyone was trying to rip me off . your also incorrect about there being an announcement in the news section . i ve just looked at the storys and if theres something there it must be pretty well hidden . if it was in a forum or hidden away in some artical its a shame it was better reported because some of us with a life only tend to skim the news briefly . nothing empty headed about that it just means we have better things to do to occupy our brains .
my point is if soe did nt inform such a widly used site like mmorpg.com untill the offer was almost up they missed an opertunity in maybe getting some people interested in the game again . of course it may be nothing to do with soe . it maybe just the way mmorpg decided to report it ( although i doubt it they are normally pretty good at this kind of thing ). if the news was hidden away in a forum somewhere again its a shame because obviously lots of people would nt have gotten the news till now .
whatever way you look at it , it is vanguards loss . i doubt anyone would return to this game without something like a free month on offer . if it has improved that much its a pity the news did nt reach more people in time .

Of course, the one article I DID find is not spelling it out, but click on the link.

Of course, you wouldn't know that. Not only are you skimming the news, but you are skimming the news on a site like MMORPG.com!
Oh well, now you know.

It actually speaks more about mmorpg.com than SOE. What a newsreporting site, huh?
*whine*
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
