I'm sure I'll get labeled a fanboy for this, but at least I'm actually interested in the game and have a reason to be here. Also, yes, CRTs are still very common to see in developement studios, businesses, etc. Also a lot of artists prefer CRTs to LCD screens. I could easily find you a bunch of pictures of high graphics quality games being developed on CRTs.
It's not that they use CRTs I don't think. It's the fact that the photos of the Adventurine offices make it look like they've spent a grand total of $500 for all their computers. CRTs aren't so bad, but when they look like the CRTs that were manufactured back in 1997, and the towers also have that 10 year old beige color and look to them - then that's where even more suspicion and mystery about this whole game comes in.
If they have computers that look like they were purchased at local garage sales, then can they really have the necessary budget required to make an mmo game of this magnitude? And even if they can make such a game on computers that look so ancient, how are they going to be able to afford the needed servers to host the game on. Ofcourse, that would assume that they actually release this game.
8 years now. Really now, I mean I think only Duke Nuke'Em Forever has been in production longer at this point.
Just a thought about all this CRT vs LCD issue. Greece, while in Europe, it has some similarities to my country (I live in what you call the third world).
A CRT cost around 200 usd less than an LCD. So if you have to buy lets say 20 computers you will be saving like 4k usd just for buying CRTs and not LCDs.
I know for you all that may not look much but think in a small company, whose owners were involved in another company which apparently went broke. They don't have plenty of money. If you look closely you may think the same as me: that office (the IT part, desks, some of the electricity, network, etc) wasmade by their own people. And they don't have many people. So saving money here and there may be a lot to them.
About the rigs, most probably they just buy the parts and made the computers themselves or just went to a computer store and bought several. One thing you must understand is that clones (computer made by you as we call them in my country) or some non clones but from a second trademark (I mean not by HP, Dell, etc but computers assamble locally in the country) are really cheap. A HP, Dell, IBM, etc can cost twice. If they actually assamble the computer or bought these cheaper assambled computers, they will look ugly... they wont buy a nice gabinet... they will buy the cheapests.
I have half our devs and analysts using CRTs. The other half is using LCDs but real crappy ones. Sorry... we are poor.
Just look at the cable installation and the desks. Look at the wifi router installed on the right top of one of the doors. I think all this proves they just a small company. They have obvious constrains in the budget.
This does not mean anything else. They may or not create a great game. People had invented, created, developed things in worst conditions. And being a big company may provide higher budget but provides other constrains too (anyone in big companies know what I am talking about; example, you may spend days trying to explain a finance guy why you need to spend more money in an equipment and then wait days and days for the part while these guys just can go to the next IT store).
About the articles... old old old info... why to keep discussing once and again old info? At least try to do as Polar does... try to bring new info! Its tedious and boring to keep seeing people posting the same articles over and over. Of course, you all have the right to express so do it all you want... but keep posting the same old articles it's in itself really bad to prove DFO is going well. Imo, it just shown the lack of real information.
About the women gamers look for a recent post where it was discussed some new info... someone sent an email to the person that wrote the article and got an answer.
I do think DFO exists (I may be wrong, after all Aventurine showed us nothing yet). My concerns are what exactly DFO is. I find difficult to believe it will be ALL we all imagine in our heads.
It's like reading a book. Each of us imagine the story, the characters, the locations, etc in our heads. Then you go to see the movie based on the book. It will never be exactly what we all imagine. First, because each of us imagine different things, it may contain slightly differences but it will not be exactly the same. Second, because the person who makes the movie is trying to create what he/she imagined, which is not the same as we imagined.
So... do you like the movie? Not always. Some people will hate it. Some will love it. Some will be... hmm... ok with it. Things like budget, the experience of the film maker, etc will impact in the final product of course but it doesn't guarantee a success.
For now, Aventurine just promised a lot of written text. 7 years of written text = HUGE HYPE.
And that's my concern. Will DFO survive this hype? Will it be what each of you desire?
Ok,i didnt read the replies but i just read in the greek PC MASTER magazine, august issue, that a fest took place in greece with all the greek game devs.Adventurine presented a breathtaking video and said that although they r not so good informing the press, the game will come out this year.
Well Was it a new vid or the one from jan.
thats why these guys are getting upset but it doesnt matter if there telling people like that that its going to release this year and they never actully told every bbody like they are about it.
tasos confedents kinda tells me there being failry honest with us.
of course they dont tell us everything but does any game dev team?
Ive been thinking that thing they found aboiut razorwax going bank rupt i actulyl think thats the real reason why no beta took place in 2005/2006 so instead of waisting time they just kept improving the game so it seemed like they was telling us the same things again but they really wasnt. If you go throw and update everything more than once. your tech goign to be doing the same thing. so that translates into waht taso has said that was the same as before to a point. baa it so confusing : /
Its simple, I don't believe in women gamers, they are a myth, its sort of like being told fairies were invited to play DF. Right...like I'm gonna believe that. Womengamers a myth? You think Tasos paid them or something to write the article and that they gathered a bunch of people to some random place with computers, then put a "Darkfall" poster on the door? Sounds a bit far fetched to me for sure, as Womengamers.com is a fairly active game site, with many other articles than the one about Darkfall. Same with ASP/LOD. Who? Never heard of them, never ran into them in a dozen games, just one of the many nebulous websites of no name guilds out there. Goons? Yep, I know them. Ebonlore.....another one I know... but LOD? Another myth. Just check LoD's forums, I doubt they would gain thousands of threads out of nothing. Goons are probably one of the biggest guilds in existence, if not the biggest and Ebonlore has been in recent fame because of what they've done in AoC, so no wonder you've heard about them. You seem to be creating these "myths" on the fly, just because of your own ignorance. Doesn't matter anymore, I don't want videos, I don't want screen shots, I want to see the damn login screen on my PC and then I'll concede it exists. Sure, I think everyone would rather have the finished game over videos and screen shots.
