As a student of History, just thought I'd throw this one out there. I'm curious to read any comments. Here are your choices in roughly chronological order.
I like the Mughal Empire myself. Or the Carthaginian Empire. Or the Seleucid Empire. Or the Sassanid Empire. Or the Byzantine (though you could argue they were a continuation of Rome).
But my all time favorite is definitely the Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately it's not on your list
I was going to limit the choices to ten, but since I screwed up and added a second poll, I just left it with 11. Of course, if you have another choice, feel free to add it. The word "greatest" is a dubious term. What does it mean to be the greatest? Does it mean largest in terms of land size? If so, it would probably boil down to the Mongol or British (if you add all the land together that the British controlled, it would be sizable). Does it mean longest standing empire? If so, then it would probably be between Egypt and Rome. Does it mean lasting legacy? If so, I think Greece would be the best choice since it influenced virtually every suceeding western empire. If it means wealthiest empire, the United States would have to be in there (although Babylon was also pretty wealthy as well in relative terms). I probably shouldn't have included Assyria, unless you want to define greatest as the most brutal empire. If so, then Assyria would be right up there at the top.
England , a lot of nations spawned from England the language is universal and they ruled the worlds oceans for what 200 years plus. And they had colonies on every continent.
It is a hard choice between them and Rome, but England would probally be greater in my opinion.
Mongols had one of the largest, if not THE largest empires ever in history. However I must go for contribution to society and say Rome.
It was the largest ever. Not to mention Genghis is the only true undefeated leader.

I am torn between the Roman and Mongolian empires, probably go with Roman because of their famous architecture and inventions. In modern times I would probably say the British empire at its height.
I'd say Rome, but no other nation in history has ever been able to project its military might around the world like the USA today.
*NOTE: I'm not American, but you have to respect a nation that can rain destruction down on a country on the other side of the world within minutes of someone giving the go ahead.
This question cannot be answered. The reason it cannot be answered is It is to subjective in its context. There have been many great empires and each has contributed greatly to the world we know of today and people will have many different reasons they can give to argue why this empire or that empire was the greatest.
Soviet Russia was nearly the same size as the mongol empire if not bigger. However, I will go with the Mongol Empire because they had nearly as sophisticated a trade network as the Roman Empire.
Rome was founded in 750 BC and what a lot of people do not realize is that th Roman Empire did not "officially" dissolve until 1917 when Tsar Nicholas was assassinated, ending the Czarist rule.
This is important to note because when the Barbarians sacked Rome, the seat of Government did not disappear like many people think. It's height of glory and power was gone but they were still around. The seat of the Government moved to Constantinople, Turkey where the Ceasers ruled for hundreds of years after the Goths sacked Rome.
When the Moors conquered Turkey (Islam) the Roman seat of Government left and went to Moscow. Constantinople turned into Instanbule (sp).
Czar (or Tsar) means Ceaser in Russian. The Government then was on its way to nothingness when all they had left was their birthright and some power. The Communist Revolution then murdered Czar Nicholas and ALL of his family, thus, ending permanently a bloodlign of Ceasers and the government of Rome.

1. The spanned the entire world, it was always day and night in the British Empire 2. They sold Opium to the Chinese, and when the Chinese said no we have had enough, Britain sailed a bunch of ships into Hong Kong and said... O Rly? 3. They have fought in every major war in the past 500 or more years. 4. Have had some of the best trained soldiers to ever grace the battle field. 5. They made oppressing half the world not only seem easy but completely humane and normal.

750 BC is when the city of Rome was founded. It then become the Republic of Rome. The Roman Empire didn't truly start until 44 BC when Caesar became dictator.

The mongol empire was the largest contigious(spelt wrong most likely) in history.

Yes, Ottoman probably should have been added to the list. I guess I was thrown off balance by splitting the poll in half. My apologies.
Rome, damn roads and all that came with them.

French should of been the BEST Empire ever!

It was not even remotely close to the largest ever. You could fit it inside Canada.
The British Empire for these reasons
1. The spanned the entire world, it was always day and night in the British Empire
2. They sold Opium to the Chinese, and when the Chinese said no we have had enough, Britain sailed a bunch of ships into Hong Kong and said... O Rly?
3. They have fought in every major war in the past 500 or more years.
