good sandbox MMO's /moved

chiodoschiodos Member Posts: 2

So I'm looking for a sandbox MMO to play. I just picked up Age of Conan and I'm so sick of the linear questing and it's only been a week. Same with LoTRO quest, quest, quest. Go here and do this. I just want something with a little more freedom. I just saw Earthrise and that looks promising but it's a couple years down the road. So any suggestions? Thanks.

If ya find a decent p2p Sandbox game let me know lol. if ya don't mind a grind game that f2p try 2moons. its alright for a little while. just passing time till Warhammer comes out. Oh, try Anarchy Online, its a big game with lots of things to do. i wouldnt call it a sandbox mmo but its something.

To tell you the truth, there is no sandbox games anymore really. If there where any good ones, people would be flocking to it.

Currently restarting World of Warcraft :/

From most games you have mentioned Anarchy Online most match the sandbox, all other have almost no sandbox in them

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Hm the only mmo I'd consider a sandbox out htere would be eve. but thats just my 2 cents.

Weird sandboxes are the new hype, everygame that comes out the fanboys start saying it'll be a sandbox . Bu when they try an actual sandbox they whine because its too complicated.

    a very sad truth ...

i fully agree that EVE is atm the best retail sandbox game out there. But i still dont like being a ship - i tried it 4 times but i cant get the hook of it. Well maybe with the avatars i will try again ...

lol you can't get more sandbox than a tale in the desert.. its literally in the sand, and you can build your whatevers anywhere except where the few npc buildings and some landscape are

but yea not everyone's into hardcore crafting only mmo's

There's still tons of quests in Vanguard much like other games we know (EQ2 and WoW).  I wouldn't even call VG a sandbox game.

Nope I agree, I played VG for a long time and sorry to say its not a sandbox. Its a decent EQ type game but you have no sandbox type tools at all.

It would have been pure awesomeness  if they had gone the sandbox route...but as it stands its a simple quest grinder with a raid at the end.

    EDIT (oops)

I think EVE and UO are really your only sandbox games out there right now. I'm not sure where PotBS would fall but it didn't turn out to be a very good game from the trial I did at launch. Maybe Ryzom but that one is not fully realized yet and has some issues, IF it gets restarted.

     More edits

Earth Rise and Fallen Earth are on the way, they will both be about as close to a sandbox as you are gonna get these days according to everything I have read so far. You know how that goes.

Vanguard's not sandbox.. the game's a linear quest driven game.. its big, but still not a game where you do anything that actually affects anything, except maybe the diplomacy buffs

EvE on the other hand, or atitd, roma victor perhaps as well, or uo..

quests doesn't make or prevent sandboxing.

Sandboxing = non linearity = freedom of play.

Thats what Vanguard is about :

    - You can join & work for different factions

    - you can build ingame boats

    - you can buy land in the countryside +  build houses & furnitures

    - you can be a diplomat

    - you have a choice of more than 40 mounts

    - you can level up different alts in different parts of the world / different mobs / different quests

    - you can be a professional crafter & never kill a mob

    etc...

If this is not sandbox then what is.

The other 3 sandbox games coming to mind would be Ryzom ( for the harvesting & wildlife ) & Horizons ( for crafting / ingame building / events ), & of course Eve.

I think I'm going to give Anarchy Online a try. W.E.L.L. Online looks cool too any news on when that may be released? I didn't see anything.

Im not sure what level of Sandbox you are looking for but I'd advise Wurm Online: Almost everything is player made, you are dumped in a world with afew basic tools and the rest is up to you. You have to make more advanced tools, hunt/gather resources, teraform the land to build on it, build a house/farm/village/town whereever. Trade, raid rival towns, hunt rare animals, craft. Its all up to you.

The other one is Roma Victor, I havent played it yet but its very similar.

Both games are basicly in the beta stage although the games are relesed and still have plenty of growth in them to reach their potential.

Anyway I 'd give Wurm a go if you are REALY looking for a proper sandbox game. Its free as well.
