Only 7 classes

darc21darc21 Member Posts: 94

I was beginning to take an interest into tis game and after doing some research, which is suprisingly very hard for this game considering that it is supposed to be release late this year.

I then found out that there are only going to be seven classes! Archaeologist, Asgard, Goa'uld, Jaffa, Scientist, Soldier and Commando. Four of them are for the human race as well, all the others have just a single class.

I feel that for a verging on next generation game there should at least be more imagination in some classes and a little more variety. I hope that this is changed and more classes are added, as this game to me was looking very promising.

7 classes might not be bad. Having classes that have a defined role is better than 17 among which 9or 10 are just sorta hybrid classes that are not really efficient in battle. The game which's class system seemed the most efficient to me was guild wars all classes were radically different (except for assasin and dervish which were wierd).

7 classes isn't to bad for the game at release I'm sure they will add more as time goes on well depending on if the games a hit.

As they have already stated that they are going to add Player space Crafts etc (like SWG) in the first expansion or so.

Don't be to hasty to make up your mind as to play it or not just wait and see.

They have every aspect of the game covered. Scientists, Archaeologists, and Asgard will focus on the minigames and crafting, while the Commando and Goa'uld take the stealth/infiltration roles, Soldier and Jaffa are the primary combat focused classes and finally some Goa'uld can have servants to function as the pet class.  Asgard will have drones that also function somewhat like a pet but they are supposedly more closely linked to the Asgard PC than pets usually are in other games.

So what should be added?  Keep in mind combat is going to be tactical and squad based, so there will be no 'tanking' where someone runs into the middle of the room and gets shot a thousand times like it's no big deal. The holy trinity method of class design is being scrapped and thrown out the window in favor of something more realistic and fitting within the Stargate theme.

If it was a truly next generation game, it would have no classes, just races, and you would choose your own path...   but 7 classes will work.

I agree w/ MDB as long as they break down skills and all into the classes and keep it open ended.

In some of the recent videos and discussions on the official forum the devs have stated that a character's spec trees don't augment the character, they define the character. A scientist specializing in Medical Technologies could play significantly different from one specializing in Robotic Tech, but at the end of the day the functions they perform in the game still fall under the "Scientist" heading.  I suspect that is why the developers use the term Archetype instead of Class as it is a bit more broad by definition.

Most games have to many classes IMHO.  Many times certain classes are just plain left out of groups / raids because there is another class that is just better suited to the standard taskat hand.  If you ask me, a well balanced MMO has the same number of classes that there are members in a group, be it 5 or 10, and every class is wanted in that group because they bring something unique and positive to the group.

I was thinking the same thing.  But if they're going to follow the well worn path, than 7 classes is as good a number as any.
