No currently announced game that is up and running or in production will dethrone WoW. Blizzard will hold the lions share of NA subs for MMO's for quite some time.
Now having said that it will eventually be dethroned. Somewhere sometime down the road a game will come out that will be better and garner more subs and make the company that owns it way to much money. Maybe Blizzard has something in the works that will cause most to shelve WoW? Maybe an indy company has a brilliant idea on the drawing board right now? Don't discount SoE either. Although they have a deplorable track record they still have alot of money backing them up.
With the current trend in MMO's it will take something groundbreaking to dethrone Blizzard/WoW of the title. But eventually it will happen. Just look at how much they have evolved in 10 years. imagine what they will be like in another 10?
I have been reading these forums for years now (I read I don't post) and everyday, probably since about a year after its release, every new game has been heralded the 'WoW killer'. Can you please just stop. All you have to do is look at the track record of all the games that have been hyped this way and you will see how dumb and completely ignorant you look when you claim a game will destroy WoW. The only company that WILL take the top spot from WoW is Blizzard themselves, with a new title. If you think they aren't working on one?...well you are more dumb than I origially thought. What ever medium you want to trust as far as who or how many are playing what MMORPG....they all say the same thing....WoW is at the top..and not just hanging on for dear life but in first place by a significant amount. So saying AoC, LOTRO, EVE, WAR, Darkfall, Aion or what ever game you want to put your hope in its not going to happen. I am not asking you to like WoW or play WoW but please just leave it out of the disscussion when you are talking about sub. numbers. WoW has set the standard and no matter how you want to spin the numbers you just make yourself look stupid when you say WoW is going down. Reality is the amount of the MMO community that thinks WoW sucks is very small...compared to the number of actual people that play MMO's. Unsatisfied players are just louder than those that are content with the game they are playing. Kind of similar to a baby when it wants something....whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! I guess I'm asking alot to have people be rational and live in reality when we are all trying to find the ultimate fantasy world to live in. Flame on

Blizzard itself will probably kill WoW by in their turn killing off all the interesting characters in the lore as fodder for the raiders. Did this make any sense to you?
Once WotLK is over, they will have already killed or used up all of the interesting characters in their lore, just about. Heck, you even get to kill Kil'jaeden. Yeah, yeah, you don't actually kill him. Anveena uses her (the Sunwell's) power to weaken him, whatever. Same damn thing, though, basically.
There is only one major WC3 character unaccounted for, and he'll likely be the focus of a lame expansion #3. That one will probably reintroduce Malfurion Stormrage and focus around the Emerald Dream/Nightmare arc. I don't think it will be nearly as interesting as poking around Outland and Northrend.
On another note, when was this place ever sane? I've been around about as long as the OP. I don't remember it ever being some bastion of intelligence or enlightened discourse.

WAR may or may not be successful depending on how you define success, but WAR doesn't have the following tha the war-craft series did and because of that won't be anywhere near the success that WOW is. Doesn't matter if WAR ends up being a better game or not.

Seriously if you think that the crossover between a MMO and warhammer is anywhere near comparible to MMO and War Craft you are beyond clueless. You can be as sarcastic as you want but tabletop gaming is a very small nitch market and warhammer isn't even the most popular one of those (being out sold by hero click and battle teck) while the real time warcraft series was on of the most succesful video games ever. Warhammer doesn't have anywhere close to the following War craft had.

My point was WHEN EQ hit the market there was nothing else to play other than UO esp. 3D mmo yes it had many games follow it trying to take its spot.....WoW on the other hand launched into a sea of mmos which your boston globe article states, least of which was EQ2 2 weeks before WoW ....that was the point of my reply...WHEN EQ lauched no competition, in contrast WHEN WoW lauched it had many MMO's to compete with. And when the dust settled....well you know this story ended.
How many WoW competitions are actually in the same fantasy world EQ like approach? (I mean you cant really compare WoW to some like EVE)

The point is that there was considerably more competition then what EQ had. I agree that the competition has been crap, but they have their players and those are players that EQ didn't have to copete for.
