I'd prefer 3rd person, especially for melee combat... but first person would also be necessary for things like archery and taking a close look at things.
Unfortunately the 3rd person view has always been such an obvious afterthought in the ES games resulting in an experience that no PC gamer could really enjoy ... maybe it's more suitable for consoles but it's just plain awkward on PC.
Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.
It is high-time a gaming company takes our money and delivers on an MMORPG that has:
World Immersion
Character Customization
Classes
Professions
Appearance
Diety
Political Affiliations
Race (perhaps I can create my own race? Let's take this to new levels)
Development
Deep (but Optional) Questing
Options
Adventurer
Explorer
Tavern-owner
Inn-keeper
Dungeon-creator
Mayor of a town (perhaps even a city after dedicated gameplay?)
Let players design the city, similar to SWG
All of the above? Why not?
Linear gameplay, forced-raiding are a dime-a-dozen today. Where is the "something" different, deeper, and more diverse gameplay?
Yep like i said before, getting rid of levels for skill base would be a start.
Basically It is going to have to be a pnp board game brought to your desktop...and more. It is something i am sure all developers were trying to do back in the early days of MMO's , one way or another. At least they were trying to do perhaps. I felt UO , Original EQ and DAoC all had some pnp aspect to it. Never tried Eve so no comment.
Oblivion can do what ever it wants , fact is, it is not a MMO. It has a nice model for a MMO but it seems to lack somewhere , i just cannot put my finger on it. I think we may have a few years untill we get all this "Total Freedom" within a true sandbox game in a fantasy or sci-fi game.
I sometimes get the feeling developers are getting away from the pnp aspects of the games and are now modelling games off of other's pasts success and looking at the $$$ instead of originality. I guess it is risk vs. reward?
Nope. The market trend is pretty clear. Players want content, not freedom. KOTOR is going exactly in that direction. bioware is famous for their stories, not creating free form worlds. There is no reason why they should abandon their strength.
I don't agree with this at all, I want freedom more then anything. I hate linear for the most part, unless the action/gameplay is good, and well, MMORPG generelly have very boring Gameplay.
What YOU want has NOTHING to do with the market trend. If you don't like it .. well too bad.
I try to be reasonable when I communicate with developers:
WoW does it better. Blizzard, good company, does the cheap MMORPG better than any other company. The world does not need, or want, another WoW. The market demands a sandbox.
World immersion Customization Deep, but optional, Questing Innovative Features (world impact, e.g., in non-zerg guild way) Freedom
Bring on Oblivion!
Sorry, but Oblivion is far from the sandbox of the earlier Elder Scroll's games. Probably because it was developed with consoles in mind. Granted it had a bit more of an open world feel but it was a far cry from the likes of Arena. I know that Bethesda, imo, has gotten lazier as of late. More concerned about graphics than the gameplay. Gameplay should never suffer for graphics in an rpg. Which is one reason why Fallout3 will probably be nothing more than an average game rather than the something special that the real Fallout games were (and I am most definitely not talking about the trivial BoS etc).
I love Oblivion, but what always amazes me is people who for some reason THINK oblivion has more depth then a MMORPG. It has not.
Most MMORPG have more : SKILLS, WEAPONS, ARMORS/CLOTHING, Quest's, etc. etc..
The whole reason why some people might perceive Oblivion as being more in depth then a MMORPG is due to their lack of experience with games and for not understanding why a game like Oblivion is perceived the way like OP seems to look at it. It's a single player game, the game is focused on just YOU, simply look at the skills, look at the gear, now be realistic and look at the skills in MMORPG, remember most over more then 8 different professions and more then 4 classes to play.
Also NPC behavior in the way it is done in Oblivion is something tech is not fully able to implement that into a MMORPG.
Overall no single player RPG would make a good MMORPG as everything what made it such a good single player RPG would be missing due to current tech.
Maybe in a 3/5 years we might see a bigger change with games in this genre due to tech being more evolved to develop MMORPG.
Doesn't mean upcoming title's can't be fun cause I am sure that between now and 3/5 years there still be games or MMORPG I will enjoy, but honestly from what I have seen from upcoming title's none of them expand on what a MMORPG CAN be but all ride the same lane as we been driving the last 4/5 years. I mean look at WAR ( i do hope it turns out great for those who are going to play it) but I have not seen anything remotely new to the game, it's another good vs. evil game, something that the online shooter genre already has done to death as that is why we see a change in online shooter getting more and more depth/emotions/ and ad certain rpg elements into them, yet MMORPG seem to go back-wards make most games easy to access and have a very limited play-style often most combat oriented.
Seems no one of you are aware that the only fantasy *true* sandbox around, Ryzom, is reopening soon.
OMG please, dont reopen that pile of s***. You cant even properly control the characters you are playing, nor rearrange the keyboard so it makes more sense. Free the world of bad MMO's, stop Ryzom !!!!

Keyboard is fully customizable and char is fully controllable, so, you are totally lying, but don't worrie, no one in ryzom will miss you.
Stay away and play what you like. I really don't care of people that speak of something that have no knowledge at all. And I can understand how would be difficult for you to play an hard game without dumbed quests and endless raiding for the uber gear.
And I'm sorry for you that Ryzom will reopen soon, i hope u will survive in some way to this news.
About my post, if it was not directly related to Oblivion, i was answering the question about "sandbox" games, because actually, apart of EVE, that's fully sci-fi, Ryzom is the only sandbox around, at least until Darkfall will be released (if it will be released), but Darkfall is fps, so not a true mmorpg.
Try to stay in topic next time instead of flaming.
I also loved Morrowind, one of the best games I ever played. Deep immersion. I was not that crazy about Oblivision, either. I would be quite satisfied with a Morrowind MMORPG with that level of depth, complexity, and immersion in a world.
Customization can be implemented in so many ways:
Character appearance
In-game decisions impacting appearance
Certain Deep Quest line causes a character to grow wings, or the opposite, horns
Character armor and weapons
Stats
Effects
Special Attacks
Appearance
Player Housing
Not immersion if everyone's house looks the same
Stats
Abilities
Paths
Professions
Classes
Multi-classes
Player-created class (why not?)
Missions
Dieties
Much more (I cannot get into each)
What the vast majority of us are saying, I think, is that a linear MMORPG is not fun; it lacks depth, the world feels generic and static, and the gameplay is too predictable.
Developers are creative, but their imaginations are limited by their budget and their own creativity.
Placing character customization tools into the hands of the players is the innovative feature desperately needed.

most importantly oblivion style FPS combat!

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
You and me both, and many of us.
We are the neglected, somewhat silent majority.
