There is a phishing scam that looks very similar. I got one and was immediately suspicious. I checked the links and sure enough the link to the account management was worldofvvarcraft.com. Now if you didnt catch that the W in warcraft was two V's. Pretty sneaky if you ask me. So my advice before you freak out is double check the links in the tab at the bottom of your browser.
Well Tigris, I appologize and must admit I am stumped. Unless you account was somehow associated with someone else who was banned or there is more to the story.
It would be interesting to see what the account team lists as the reason your account was locked and when it happened.
Do you still have the original email stating your account status? If so can you check the links in the email to make sure you didn't click through to a phishing site?
One of three things has happened here. 1. Your not telling us the full story, which give me a break you know some people aren't going to believe you 2. You account was hacked, unlikely because you said your account was not active. 3. Blizzard made a mistake, contact CS and get them to fix it, no big deal.
Peace
Well it's certainly possible. I had the exact same thing happen to me in SWG (years ago). I never was able to post on the forums because my account was banned. I had never even entered the forums before and never been in any trouble with a GM in game. Support was usless they tried blamming the problem on my ISP (after giving me 3-5 other crap solutions).
Well it wasn't a phishing e-mail. All the links were official and what not. But apparently I am not the only one who got this economy ban for no reason.

I am a very casual player and would not know how to exploit anything in WOW. I dont inderstand how I could have been shut off I have barely even touched the game for weeks.
I've been banned by Blizzard erroneously before. November 2006, I was banned during a molten core run for 3rd party software. Eventually I found out that running a linux windows emulator caused a false positive for wowglider and when inquiring through email and on the phone, I was ignored and given automated replies. Unfortunately for them, I made a new account and actually purchased wowglider to level up all the things they took from me. I got revenge as I then sold the account 2 months later for $250. I currently have a new wow account with a 68 Belf Paladin that I leveled with a friend. Suffice to say, had it not been for a friend I wouldn't have returned to WoW for leisure purposes. Had they not won their case with mmoglider/wowglider I would probably finish said paladin and sell it too(my friend got tired of the game at 65, he's not avid on grinding pointlessly, neither am I). Just pointing out though, I got banned for using a windows emulator to play on linux, but didn't get banned when I used glider. Like I said, they're not perfect or right, and like someone else said; their EULA insures that technically they're "right" no matter what. Thank you though Blizzard, your game was a great financial endeavor for me and taught me what I truly like in MMO's: fun. Not gear, not levels, not elves, dwarves, or orcs...just fun. I will enjoy the new brand of MMO's that are forthcoming. As for Tigir, I understand what you are dealing with. Everyone on the outside will assume guilt before innocence, its irritating but thats the world we live in.

Did you not read it? I made money off of their mistakes. They got $30 from me after the ban, and I made $250. Thats a net gain of $220 for me, I couldn't care less about my reputation when it comes to a Blizzard product. What about their reputation? In my eyes they're greedy, and have poor methods of investigation. People make such a huge deal about WoW since it's the most subscribed MMO of all time. However in terms of general population, their subscription numbers barely scratch the surface of any market. Yes, I am oh so worried about my World of Warcraft reputation.

You gave Blizzard more money, than sold your account to some poor sod. Thats still $30 to blizzard, they win as usually even if the true loser is the guy that bought your account.
Question, why is there now the additional "fact" of third party software?
I do believe you might have been right pegleg ...... =P
Ciao
I seriously came here for answers and support. Not ridicule. Please do not twist my words or put words into my mouth. I stated "Somone else used my account and used third party software. Yes THATS what I said. I never said "I" used any. No I have not ever used anything 3rd or 2nd or w/e party thats not part of the WoW client. Please stop putting words in my mouth just to justify this.
EDIT: Somone mentioned calling them up. Does anyone happen to know the phone number? I just saw e-mail support.
I really think you are in the wrong forums to be looking for help. You should be in the blizzard forums IMHO. Afterall, this is a blizzard problem
World of Warcraft - Account Retrieval Instructions
Saturday, August 2, 2008 3:00 AM
Greetings,
An investigation of your World of Warcraft account has found strong evidence that the account has been accessed by someone who is not allowed to use it. The account has been disabled, so that you can regain sole and secure access. If you use a credit card to subscribe, it has been removed so you are not charged while the account is disabled. Please keep this email until you have regained account access.
Just recieved this e-mail as of today. I've never shared my pass or account with anyone. I'm the only one who knows it, but I'm guessing somewhere somehow I was hacked from a website somehow? Don't know exactly, but it turns out that getting my account back looks good.
I guess it wasn't a random ban and someone was on my account so I apologize to blizzard for the random ban comment even though I had my reasons for saying it. Also, thanks to all those who believed me when I said I hadn't done anything illegal. Wish me luck on going through the forms and getting this all sorted.
Hi! My name is paper. Nerf scissors, rock is fine. MMORPG = Mostly Men Online Roleplaying Girls http://www.MichaelLuckhardt.com
Not bashing here, but everyone (and I mean everyone) I've known who have had their accounts hacked have all bought gold at some point. They've all had their items, talents, etc. restored though.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.

Or they clicked on keyloggers?
The big question is really how you were hacked?

You were banned "erroneously" for using glider so you then went out and bought glider and a new account. Now there is the most believable story I have ever heard.
I bet there is more to the story then just a random Banned
First off, I don't appreciate your accusation.
no actually. There isn't anything else to my story. Sorry if I sounded a bit hotheaded but I cannot stand when things like this happen to people who don't deserve it. Especially when it inolves myself. No I have never done anything illegal with my account.
I have not had an active subscription since the free return of the burning crusade which I only played 14 days and had some fun leveling my char a bit. then my time ran out. Now 5 months later when I don't even have an active subscription I get thrown a random ban. There is absolutelly no explaining this.
And no, no one knows my account pass or username...so this is completely bogus.
Blizzard dont put names into the ban hat and pull a name out. Obviously your account was/had been used for untoward things wether that was you or some 1 hacked your account when you were not using it.
Well then there are 2 solutions here. Somone's been hacking my account and using third party software....or....Its a random ban. Guess life just sucks sometimes, Thanks blizzard.
Don't thank blizzard, thank yourself for not knowing enough about computers which got you hacked
I bet there is more to the story then just a random Banned

This has happened to me four times, actually. Well, the 'banned' for no apparent good reason portion bit.
3 of those times, I was reported for 'bott'ing'. I have multi-accounts and was simply pulling my lowbie behind my main. I did this to burn through levels in my late 40's-50's. I was reported multiple times by other players (I guess I had somewhat of a monopoly on some spawns with my army of alts). Numerous tells were sent to my lowbies, but I wasn't watching them... I was watching my main). So, ban stick hit lowbies. I lost 1 account permanently (lvl 60), but Blizz has always been understanding and returned my accounts to me... once they realized I wasn't botting.
The other time was just last week. I had a twink @ lvl 19...decked out rogue with all great items. On that same account, I had several 'bank/vault' toons as well. I rarely log in to that account unless I'm shifting inventory or need to craft something. I had let it sit for nearly a month+ without checking it.
Last weekend I got an e-mail from Blizzard saying that I had requested a password change. I hadn't requested the pw change. When I tried to log in to the account, I got the 'account frozen... banned' e-mail. Account suspected of xxx activities... exploit economy... etc.,.. I sent e-mails to Blizz, proved who I was, that I hadn't logged in... they gave me my account back within 4 days (from mon-thurs). The damage was done, though... my twink was lvl 25, my bank toons weren't touched, but I was missing a lot of gold.
Blizz gave me my account back, but the gold is gone and now I need a new twink (what else do you do with your gold from daily quests?).
I don't share passwords... ever. Never have. Not in this game or any other game. I give out buddy keys to friends/family that want to try games.
I run anti-virus, spy/mal-ware software, I don't run many add-ons in game, and my home network/box is fairly secure (no system is 100% secure and only an idiot would say they are).
Amazing a computer program knows which people are playing WoW and their email addresses to be able to send the SCAM email. How is that possible?
I have been getting all kinds of fake emails from blizzard that my account is frozen or I have won a beta key (I'm already in anyhow). I am only getting them from the email account that I have posted in messages on this forum and the email account I use here is only for this site.
Someone is just running a program that scans for email addresses in the WoW forums (maybe others) and sending out phishing emails. It sounds like the poster above fell for one last week as that is the same time frame I got the fake emails.
They look very convincing and I don't blame anyone for falling victom. It is always a better option to type in a URL than to click a link in an email.
Ha, anytime I want to see stupid, ridiculous, immature, pointless, idiotic, childish, annoying, juvenile, irritating, mind numbing drama all i have to do is go to any WoW forum on any website in existence or play the stupid, ridiculous, immature, pointless, idiotic, childish, annoying, juvenile, irritating, mind numbing game! That is why I avoid the game like the plague. I play "Adult" games with hardly no stupid, ridiculous, immature, pointless, idiotic, childish, annoying, juvenile, irritating, mind numbing kids to be seen. Sheesh!
Thank you World of Warcraft, Age of Conan and soon Warhammer for giving all the stupid, ridiculous, immature, pointless, idiotic, childish, annoying, juvenile, irritating, mind numbing little bastards a game they can ruin so they all will stay away from the quality games I play!

Seems to be a case of much ado about nothing. You haven't played for 1.5 years, don't want to play, have no intention of playing again...
Who cares? If this happened to me (ie. in something like AoC) I'd delete the email and laugh.

Thanks I feel better now!
