When will you people realise that Guild Wars is the one and only COMPLETE MMO product in the world. It has everything that buyer / user makes content and happy: 1. more then reasonable price, it's almost free;
2. for your money u get rediculous, mindboggeling amount of gameplay;
3. NO MONTHLY FEE;
4. all mmo aspects are there (and at an excellent level also): pve, pvp, economy, community ...;
5. meaningfull game that has a purpose - what you accomplish is going to be transfered to future release GW2;
6. excellent storyline in every single campaign, its like reading a book;
7. EXCELLENT gameplay, i mean this game is really so flexable and playable;
8. runs on piece of crap machines like totaly average kitchen blender;
9. distribution is awsome, u can get this game in convinient stores in godforsaken countries like mine ;
10. support is good (i got my money back when i accidentaly screwed up internet purchase)
11. did i mentioned that theres no ball-breaking monthly fees;
12. NO BUGS whatsoever - theres like so small bugs that vast majority of players wont even notice, and those get fixed at lightspeed;
13. Constant little, considerate tweaks that make this game probably most balanced in the world

What is the point of arguing over the term MMO? GW is a game, that is all that matters. It is a good game, no argument about it. Is it the best game, not for me. Is it the only game worth playing, definitely not.
Not here to dismiss GW, I admit I had my moments of pleasure, leveling one of each combo, and yes I need to buy 3 accounts to have enough slots and even then I cannot try all combos. The game is very flexible, you can respec almost costlessly, so long as you kill enough mobs after each respec.
The real limitation of this game is content. The PVE for the first game is pathetic. You have a fixed path to walk you cannot go elsewhere, for places you can see, you cannot go unless the game allows you. Its very linear. There is not enough diversity. Compare with the major releases like WoW, EQ2, or even LOTRo, there is just not enough variety and acitivities to keep me coming back.
All games will grow old some day. There is just that much attraction, and it diminishes everytime I log in and repeat it. GW hit that point of no return much faster, and unfortunately once I reach that point, I have no more urge to return some day, even if its free. I will stop WoW, LOTRo, and later return and retry. For GW I won't. So what if its free? If I am not going back it does not matter if it cost a million or is free. If I do not feel the urge to play anymore, price is irrelevant.
GW is a fun concept, and yes I will go try GW2 when its finally out, just to see how much magic there is in the new title. GW once gave me weeks of fun, maybe GW2 will do better.
Massive- seems preety massive to me. Lots of content. Tons of retail sales.
Multiplayer- I seem to be playing with tons of people.
Online- Hey look my game has a ping on it . I guess I'm ONLINE.
Role Playing- I'm a warrior/monk ingame but irl I'm not.... hmmmm I must be PLAYING a ROLE.

there is no doubt that GW is an mmorpg, i think people dont like the fact that it is a persistant world...im not gonna say, for example wow, because wow is a PoS game...i wish they made games like the old UO again =/ just gotta wait for darkfall i guess
1. Avatar controls are very different and that's a personal taste of course for PvP.
2. Preloading of zones and hopping from one point to another makes it far less immersive. RP element is gone.
3. Lack of consistent PVE worlds makes it a cross between TF2 and an MMORPG like Wow or LOTRO.
Imagine if GW had a subscription rate just like Wow.... because as a free game it still has only about 5% of the playing time Wow has (see Xfire samples).
If it was that good for most people it would easely be the number one played game by a long shot.
It is of course by far the best MMO-game for free, but it plays in another league at the moment.
I also see a lot of very young kids play it, because they can't afford (or allowed) subcriptions
GW lives from the sales of its expansion boxes and that's just way too short to survive on the long run if you would like massive consistent worlds and dungeons.
Even a 200K sub game makes more money than a yearly expansion selling 1 million copies.

After being impressed by the visuals, I was met with PATHS on the ground I couldn't stray from, a restricted environment that basically forced me to follow rails with invisisble walls everywhere. LAME!!! The gameplay was the same as any other MMO. But with everything instanced, I didn't care about exploring anything and the PvE was mostly non-existant and generic. I had no interest in playing a MMO-lite PvP battleground game so I never got past the beta. Not my thing.
I enjoy full featured MMOs with persistant worlds to explore. I want to build a character and feel somewhat invested in him/her. If all I want to do is log on and PvP in battlegrounds every once in a while, I'll play an FPS.
- Controls. I dislike the control system of GW. I am used to different control systems.
- PVE. I dislike the PVE in GW.

1. have you actually ever tried their customer service? I have, and I was treated better than I have been by any company I have tried to deal with in the gaming industry. They were polite, friendly and truely appeared as if they wanted to help me. So I have no clue what you are talking about. They have treated their players with respect and they care so much about their players that they actually gave away real prizes at tourneys. They gave away Ipods, video cards... computers it really was impressive. With the treatment i received through their customer service, I can't imagine anyone having a problem with them.

You see, massive amounts of content aren't nearly the same thing as massively-multiplayer. THAT is the real essence, the core of the entire genre. Sure the game is great (if you like it). There's not much wrong with it, but it is NOT an MMO. So why is it being discussed as if it were?

okay.. I am trying to understand your point here. They have made the game based more on real player skill instead of how many levels you earned in game or how much $ you spent on gear and you think this is a bad thing? Are you kidding me? That is what makes it awesome. It allows for players to use real strategy and skill to fight rather than noob gear, this is what the games have been needing all along. So that when you fight someone that you know that you lost or won out of real skill rather than some in game gear, or that you have played the game longer. That way you lose a battle fair and square because you both had the same in game opportunities. If this bothers you so much I think you need to think about that a bit more because I would much rather be defeated by a better player than by a player with better gear. I respect a player that out witted me, not a player that out geared me. I mean if you have your choice between being beaten by a player with better gear and a player with better real life skills which do you really want? Keep practicing maybe you will get to that level of pvp that gear and levels do not mean as much as the satisfaction of beating a great player simply because you had better real skills than they did. That you contolled the fight, that you were able to predict what they were going to do and was prepared to counter it, that you as a player were able to defeat them not with any in game items but with your own real skills. think about it...
As a matter of fact, i'd have to agree. Almost every mmoprg i play does not last much at all. GW lasted and left me with a good impact. Yes at times it felt very "lonely" because of instances but its worked out allright. The story line and quest gameplay is really fun, almost grindless. Unlike instances like diablo 2, where it offered not much end game material.... gw had excellent end game material, PVP. There was just SO many skill/profession combinations and so many builds out there. Surely you could copy a groups build but it also takes a lot of teamwork to execute them right. Alot of coordination needed with vent/teamspeak. Im wainting for gw2!!

GW was a very fun game while I played. Unfortunately, it just feels a bit too much of the same after a while. And eventually the "you must have X build" mentality started creeping into the PvE side of things as the game became so hard that one needed to have a team build.
And at optional $100/year (2 expansions, though it didn't quite happen that fast) as opposed to $180/year ($15/mo), it's a great bargain. As another person said, if you're not playing, it doesn't leave you feeling guilty. You can always skip an expansion if you're not playing that much.
Guild Wars is very polished. It's as clean as WoW and COH. I can never get into it though. When I want to PVP I feel I have no direction. I just wander aimlessly wondering where I should go to get the best PvP experience. The quest provide good direction though.
I don't like grouping in the game either. Not enough communication. You join a team, run the guantlet. follow the leader or you are the leader, and just run up and kill things. I also don't like icon system. I'm never sure of what Im cleansing off of other players. All I know is it is either a hex or a poison.
I hate soloing quest as a caster because I have to get first aggro on all the pulls before the npc henchmen jump into the fight.
I must say, this is the most PVP balanced game to date though.

I played Guild Wars for the shortest amount of time I've ever played an MMO... No wait, a game. I think I lasted about 15 minutes before uninstalling.

No player-made-things
Close to no roleplaying
No race variety
No open world
