My all time favorite was EQ which I played for years and loved. I have yet to play a mmorpg that had as good of a community and sheer varitey of things to do. Though a majority of players didnt roleplay there is no other fantasy mmorpg that supports the ability to roleplay more. The faction system, races with unique cities and cultures, race languages, deep history, and many other things just gave you all the tools for great roleplay fun. Its because of EQ that I am most looking forward to EQ2 currently.
I thought AC was pretty fun but it didnt have the variety that EQ has and the graphics have always been sub par in my opinion. Still it was fun for a while.
I really didnt enjoy Dark Age of Camelot. The game seemed very shallow and I wouldnt recommend it unless you really enjoy pvp which just isnt my thing personally. Then again its had a few expansions since I played and it does have a fairly large female player base. If you think you might like the large realm versus realm pvp battles then you might really enjoy this one it just wasnt my thing.
While I think Lineage 2 has by far the best looking character models I cant really recommend the game which has a pretty nasty community and is of course a heavily pvp oriented game. I also was not a big fan of having to spend most of my play time trying to get enough money to buy basic equipment. Overall the game just didnt seem fun.
I liked City of Heroes and it was quite a bit of fun for a month or so. Its easy to sit down and play short bits and can be very entertaining for that. The game seriously lacks any long term appeal though so I would go into it with the idea its only someting to play for a month or so. If you end up still having fun after that then great!
I havent tried Star Wars Galaxies since I am not a big sci fi person and I hear mixed reviews of it but its supposed to have amazing character customization and some neat professions that differ from most mmorpgs. Cant recommend it really though since I havent played it myself.
I have tried other mmorpgs like FFXI but you already know about that one and this is getting a bit long so I will cut it short.
Of the new mmorpgs coming out I am looking forward to EQ2, Tabula Rasa, and World of Warcraft in that order.

First of all, HUGE welcome to the community, you should enjoy it a lot.
My girlfriend loved the heck out of EQ. A large majority of my EQ guild is women (the other large majority is men!!! sorry, had to be stupid.). Other than that, I don't know too many girls who enjoy the online play of Warcraft 3, since it IS infested with BNet scum. There are a few other games I could suggest, but I'm sorta busy at work and I'll come back to post those in a few minutes.

Ok, I'm back with a few games you might want to check out:
Biosfear (it's EH, but when I played A LOT of the top players were female...like 12 of the top 20)
Ragnarok Online (Cheasy anime graphics, but if you're into that kinda thing...)
Everquest (great community for the most part, but a large timesink)
Anarchy Online (it's Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk, not fantasy, but I know a lot of girls that play it in real life, and they love it. I'm beta testing the new expansion, and I can vouch for the community).
Dark Age of Camelot (Another good game, but more PvP oriented because of RvR. It's sorta cartoony, so you might enjoy it)
Not too many multiplayer non-MMORPG games that I could suggest that you'd like via LAN...maybe Neverwinter Nights or Warcraft 3. Morrowind is great, but is singleplayer only.

I don't know what kind of women you hang out with, but the ones I know would gut you for that comment.
That being said, most of the women I know either play EQ, or DAoC. They're not super hardcore about it or anything, though. I would suggest City of Heros, although it lacks longevity, and the female models suffered from ghetto booty. Still it offers the best character customisation, as far as your costume, Star Wars Galaxies has the best customisation as far as your actual character itself, and offers a wide variety of professions to fit pretty much any gaming style.

I wrote up an entire post, and came back today and it seems to be gone...ah well...take two:
I frequent both mmorpg.com and womengamers.com.
One thing you'll find with most true women gamers is that we hate the idea of 'girly games'. If they made a mmorpg about shopping, I'd shoot myself on the spot. I don't want a girly game...I like what's out there. I enjoy fps, mmorpg, action, adventure, simulation, etc.
Personally I believe why women don't play as much is that it's not marketed to us. I'm going to compare it to auto mechanics, simply because I used to work with 600 auto apprentices. About 6 of the 600 were girls, so 1%. They all loved the work; some weren't into drooling over cars, but they enjoyed the physical aspect of it. One girl drooled over cars like crazy; had her own pimped-out vehicle. A couple were into the paint aspect, some into body repair, and one who specialized in construction machinery. (Seeing a little blonde girl in a huge tractor's engine was quite amusing).
Gaming industry is the same way; a small percentage of females, but not nearly as bad as 1%. Why don't girls get into mechanics or games? Because nobody brings the games/mechanics to them. Where I worked, the tutors didn't go seeking for auto apprentices in the girls high school at first, only the boys high school (they visited coed schools as well). Plus there's still that social stigmata that these were boys activities; it is wearing off but will take awhile longer.
I'd love to see a mmorpg advertise to a wider audience; most mmorpg fans know about the games through friends and websites like this. You really don't see wider marketing. I never knew what an mmorpg was until a friend kept saying "Ok, going to play EQ now!" and I finally asked him what it was. He explanation was intriguing, and here I am. I also dragged my sister into EQ as well; mmorpgs dont' market, they rely on word of mouth. Naturally, with the subscriber base being mostly male, it's going to spread from guy to guy before it spreads from gal to gal.
Way off topic, yeah, but basically I feel it should trend towards 'creating games for girls' to 'marketing current games to girls'.
And I suggest Dark Age of Camelot as well - and several friends enjoy City of Heroes, but they play it with something else as it's nice but lacks substance according to them (they come back to daoc for pvp).
Good luck and welcome to the community; you've sold your soul to mmmorpgs.

Dark and Light has attracted a good number of women. I have not asked them why but I suspect its is due to its variety, community, politics, and settlement. I am not sure if most women like its PvP but that will mostly occur on the frontier and even then any large scale PvP will be dependent on the economy and poltics of the game.
well, myself being male i can't really comment on what games are good for girls, but i don't see why gender should impact preference myself. so, fantasy setting, lots of customisation and stuff to do, pretty much rules out lineage 2 then Personally, i'm playing DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot) at the moment. it's still got a lot that i've not explored and tried, and i've been playing almost 2 years now, with short breaks to try swg and lineage 2, the less said about those the better imo... anyway, at the moment, personally i'd say DAoC, not hugely customizable, but a bit, but plenty to do and keep you occupied and interested for a while. and as for any future titles, i'm keeping a look out for world of warcraft, and also everquest 2. both of which look as though they may be interesting. hope this is of some use

Yeah would have to agree with Anarchy Online and DAoC haveing alot of women players.
Out of all the games I've played never had been any organizations/guilds that had as many females as my Anarchy and DAoC clans. My DAoC clan more women then men during the first few months.
I resigned up for DAoC recently after quitting 4 months after the release. The towns in hibernia were pretty empty, wasn't very easy to find anyone to group with. Even the parthanon farm had 0 people at it... I remember when there would be 4 or 5 groups there and 3 or 4 people a little higher soloing, all the time. I activated my old DAoC account and luckily it still didn't have my high level characters deleted. DAoC is kinda lonely if you are under lvl 30, atleast on the RP server I played on, in Hibernia. Were tons of people in the 40-50 range.
I never like sci-fi role playing games at all, but a buddy told me about Anarchy Online so I bought when It released with very little excitement about it. I still don't like sci-fi games too much, but loved Anarchy Online. Had a large percentage of female friends that played it. They did more RP then leveling in that game. Always comming up with new outfits and hanging out at the night club in Omni-Entertainment District.
Ultima Online had alot more women player then anyother game I've seen back when I played it.
Almost all the women gamers I knew from DAoC and AO were all players that started on Everquest, so I'd say it has a big percentage of women players that enjoyed it. I played a bit after it first released, when I was still playing UO. I deleted the game several hours later, and kept playing Ultima Online. After all 8 expacks that have come out I decided to download it yesterday and try the 30 day trial. Took 12 hours to get it on my slow 256 DSL. I played it for 10 minutes then deleted it lol. I won't say its a bad game becuase it has proved to be otherwise... just not for me. Always tons of people around though, once thing that was nice to see.
I would not start Everquest because you don't really know where that game will go in a year. With the newer game releases Everquest may go downhill and members will leave. I personally would start a stable game. City Of Heroes may be a good choice. Like I said, it has many female players and it looks good.

So, for me same as Misti, but flip the first two around
I have found many female players in the games I have played. And granted we are the minority in those games, however we are rising fast as a growing customer base!
Whatever one you go to, just enjoy it, give it a chance to see if you like it, then as there are such a variety out there now. Just keep on going

Just thought id mention it, as no one else has, you could try Eve-Online. If you like sci-fi games, and dont feel the need to run a little avatar around on the ground all the time, then the space traveling ways of eve might suite you. Although i have not met alot of women in the game, i beleive there are quite a few here and there. The game has a great, mature community, alot of economics, missions, industry, npc kill'n and as much pvp as you want or dont want. I know a few women who frequent #eve-radio irc chan on irc.coldfront.net who might be able to answer any questions you have, or try the eve-online forums.
lineage2 is fun for a while, after a few weeks of playing you realise all you do is grain exp in the same area, its so repetative, but they got 1 thing right in Linagea 2 (The Graphics are great). Other than graphics id say it doesnt offer much.
If you like fun fantasy oriental style kinda game this is definatly a great choice to check out, unless you only like games with 3D graphics.
Hello!! I'm not sure if my taste in games is the same as yours, but as a fellow girl (hehe) I've really enjoyed Asheron's Call and Ragnarok Online. I used to play UO years ago, but I wouldn't recommend it now, hehe. Anyway, RO is a really cutesy game and I adored it! The storyline + monthly updates and friendly community kept me glued to AC. Oh yeah, and all the neat outfits! Hope this helps...
