Why pay for a buddy key?
    No its not normal.
In LOTRO you did get buddy key also and  you could give them away free. First you did not have any place to DL the client, but they did make a place very soon after the launch.
Its still free and you can get it without any problem. But thats a good company that did make Lotro and they know how to act to the subscriber and people that want to try it out.
I ´m a life time subscriber of Lotro and never regret I did buy it.
    greetz

Funcom doesn't advertise a free trial; turbine does.  Just because some companies do it doesn't mean everyone has to.

Since when are retailers obligated to offer the same promotions and sales that others do?

Only the smart ones. Of course when everyones is free and you charge for yours you can bet you have  marketing geniuses working for you.

I wonder how long it will be before funcom starts charging for downloading patches. I mean, its using their bandwidth right? Somebodies gotta pay for that. LOL.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
    Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

I think the point being made here if an MMO is trying to advertise itself it would have a wider audiance of people willing to try and play it if the trial was free IE Eve online, SWG ( i know i cant believe i said that), Planetside, LOTR, EQ2 etc.... Alas i was with AoC from the beginning and pre-beta and i stopped playing the game shortly after i got it, content went down the drain, guild started loosing peeps like it was the plague and the constant patches to fix the prior patches borked the game for me.

$2.99 'cover charge' just tells me they aren't confident in their game.  If the 13GB transfer is coming out of their pocket and you don't like the game and do not subscribe, they lose. If you paid $3 for it at least they got something.

Maybe they should give us the 2.99 for handing out the buddy key....

As for the ' They give you 3 extra days play.." So that is what ...ten days of play, well lets see...

    COH - 14 days

    EvE- 14 days

    SWG- 14 days

    EQ2- 14 days

    L2- 14 days

AO- 14 days (before it went f2p or P2P)

    DAOC- 14 days

    D&D- 14 days

    Matrix- 14 days

    WoW- 10 days

And I am sure there are many others with more or less time...most trials I have done have been between 14-30 days, including download....WITH NO CHARGES!

It's not a matter of money...it is a matter of giving out a free trial, then essencially charging for it. If the game is such a whooping success, and the company so proud of their accomplishment, why are they so cheap?

Don't waster your time or money on AoC.

AOC is the worst MMO I have ever seen released. Any of the free MMO's are better than this half finished crap they shoved on us (after being 2 years late) is unbelievable.

I have been following the official forums since launch date (non-subscribers can view them, but not post) and it seems that FunCom has absolutely no idea what they are doing.
But I was rather persistent on trying it out, so I asked a guildie from Lineage II to give me a Buddy Key, only to find out that I have to pay 2.99 to download it from FunCom.
    No, I don't do torrents.
This is the first time I've seen a game developer actually ask for money to download a game to "trial" it.  It is also quite rude when you consider that going from trial to subscription is not just giving them your CC number.  You have to actually buy the game to get a subscription, on top of paying them 2.99 to download the client to trial it to see if you even want to buy the game.  It seems alot of people on the official forums are ignorant of the fact that you can't circumvent the costs of the game by getting a buddy key to avoid paying 49.99 for it - you still have to pay 49.99 for the game if you want to keep playing after the trial is over.
They also seem ignorant of the fact that alot of people who move games, even if they move with other people, are geographically distributed in a way that makes P2P transfers slow, or mail transfers unthinkable.  I have friends in Norway, and I live in the US.  Why would I bother having them mail me a AoC CD, and why should I bother trying to download something from their computer when the transfer rate will be extremely abysmal.  I don't do Torrent downloads or download from obscure sites for security reasons, I've been ganked in the pass with Trojans and Viruses.
So instead of going against my Moral Judgement, I am just going to download EQ2.  After all, I get a free "Buddy Pass" from an EQ2 player, with a full free month of play, and when I subscribe I get the game and every expansion for free on top of other goodies.
2.99 for a client download is shady, and how expensive it actually is has nothing to do with it.  I just can't see going against my moral judgement and bending over while paying 2.99 for a client download to try a game I may not even buy in the end.
But I guess it's for the best.  Probably saved me alot of time in the end, anyways.
Sorry, just had to Rant a little.

Your contempt for torrents is out of ignorance. Even blizz uses it for wow patches. Nothing is wrong with a protocol. Its your fault if you get viruses and trojans by going to some no name site. I have downloaded things for years now and never got one virus.

As for funcon yes its a scam. They use torrents to distribute ie use others bandwidth to save them money. Just do the math on how much this little scam can add up too in no time. Say 50,000x$3=$150,000
