What sets AOC apart from other games?

I just want to know whats special about the game, before anyone asks graphics dont make a game special. they can only add to good gameplay.

Performance issues, poor coding, poorly implemented patches and lackluster poorly written patch notes that often contain more undocumented changes than documented.

Imho, thats what sets AoC apart from other games. Other than that, its nothing special at all, a broken shell of a game that had massive potential but had the misfortune of being developed by one of the most inept, untalented development teams to ever have existed.

Currently, it has no real upside.

    One in a dozen?

Since pre-cu SWG I have not seen a MMORPG that really sets itself apart from the rest....BUT

They have changed a couple of things, for example Tortage/first 19/20 lvl's, that definitly stands out from the norm and was mostly even by those who currently dislike the game praised.

You say don't say Graphics, but lets face it we do not have a MMORPG that has the looks of AoC, but try and look at it objective, do not look at it's performance and such but pure graphics and I feel we can agree that it does stand apart from most MMORPG. But keep in mind it's also a personal taste, anyway to me it looks pretty good, I also felt LotrO was good looking just not how I would have liked it even more ( hoped on a somewhat darker LotrO) but never the less the game does look good, but then I also feel Vanguard has some awsome views, but so has Tabula Rase, but all of these games have it in their own way as thats how I look at them. I even feel WOW looks good but totaly different then how I look at AoC.

But maybe I play many different genre's of games from RTS to FPS and all in between, so I always wil find what I might be looking for in different type of games. Being with MMORPG for the time I have I don't really expect to see a MMORPG that would really hype me or will be totaly AWESOME, my bet is maybe in a year of 3/5 due to seeing how tech has and is evolving I don't expect it any time sooner, but I am sure some in between will be again enjoyeble to have fun with as thats still my only reason to play these games and thats to have fun, no fun is me out finding another game for my hobby.

They tried to make the combat 'real time' to set it apart from the others but what they actually did was just mask the usual turn based timed attack combat seen in other mmo's.  Instead of pressing a button and waiting for a 2-3 second cast time like in WoW, you press said button, fill in that timer with a bunch of directional combo's then the move is done. So not only is boring after awhile, it will give you RSI to boot.

They dropped the ball on the one thing that was supposed to make it stand out.

Tortage reminded me of DDO. There is nothing special about this game at all. It's a complete disappointment from all that was promised.

I hear Funcom is thinking about hiring Brad McQuaid to fix it up.

I hear Brad turned 'em down because even he couldn't believe they went live with what they had.

Honestly these forums are the wrong place to ask about this game. Everyone here is jaded because there were a bunch of features missing from the game which were promised from release. In their defense, the game was released in a very unfinished state.

However, the game is not all bad. It has a very unique combat system which is very entertaining (at least at first). It also has great graphics (the best of any massive to date) and a very immersive world.

If you are a fan of MMORPGs, you will no doubt thoroughly enjoy this game for a while. Unfortunately, the massive amount of missing content will eventually get to you and you will quit... quite likely leaving the game as jaded as everyone else on these forums.

#1 Lack of company ethics.   I'm not talking about the launch.  I'm talking about everything.  Want to know what's going on with this game?  Better ask the players, because if you ask the devs, you are going to get lies.

#2 Lack of loyalty to their own IP.  Love REH?  Love Conan?  AoC is not the game for you.  In 3-4 months, the game's 12 subscribers will enjoy a Teen rating.  Grats FC on downgrading a game's rating to lose sales.

#3 Volunteer moderation for a paid customer forum.

#4 Sweeping nerfs to entire game mechanics after they are already implemented.  Look at today's mount nerf.

#5 Company has no vision.  As a result, they have no clue which customer feedback is good, and which is bad.  They just throw a dart randomly and pick something and run with it.

Sadly, these are the things that set AoC apart, really and truly.
