Silly stereotype

tvalentinetvalentine Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 4,216

everyone has seen somebody say "im glad all the little kiddies are asleep, now we can have some decent convo's now" or something similar to that. Or maybe one that involves a statement about 12 year olds. Yeah well, the AOC community is a great example of      age =/= maturity   I have never seen so many hardcore trolls and foaming at the mouth pissed of customers before, and these are all peopel who played and tried the game, people who were supposed to be mature and above the age of 18. I quit using stereotypes 2 years ago, its really pointless imo, why look at the persons age behind the character when you should be looking at how the person reacts to specific events.

You are correct sir, while I still use the 12 year old comment I have seen far more immature 20+ year olds than the younger generation.

Age is not the defining factor for maturity anymore.  Even on these boards you can look at people's profile (that is if they listed the correct age) and you can see that there are just as many old morons as there are young morons.  And truthfully I have even less respect for those over the age of 20 that still use leet speech and the likes as apposed to the younger generation..

Can't agree with you more. I've been on these forums since I was 14, and I found it real annoying when the "mature" gamers talked about how little kids ruin their MMOs. Ive played plenty of online games and found that the older crowd, especially, has no problem flaunting their disrespect over a headset or through a keyboard from the other side of a tv or computer monitor.

I only use it at perfect moments when I know it works.

Stuck in a group with an annoying pillock? Ask him if he's 12.

If he is, he'll deny it and shut up so as not to draw even more attention to his age.

If he isn't, he'll deny it and shut up so as not continue looking like a brat.

It used to be that age was indicative of maturity, but that is no longer the case. We live in a time where we are constantly being bombarded by new information, where people are going to school into their 20's and 30's and even older. This requires us to maintain a child-like dispostion. Is this the real reason so many people are immature? Maybe, maybe not. Points to anyone that knows where I got this. :-D

    I agree.

This is why I don't 100% understand age limits in guilds.  I've seen kids act more mature than adults in many situations, people should not be judged differently because of their age.  I've made friends, old and young, and have never thought of a player more/less mature because of their age.

You can never tell someones age online unless you know them in real life. Many people look older/younger than they are.. Anyway within reason.

I was actually quite sad about the AoC community on a whole. Many immature people, many many immature people. While there is some decent people, I'd say the majority of people known are very immature.

It was one of the many reasons I'll probably never go back to the game. The forums are just as bad, troll/hate posts galore.

You could be like me, 15 and sound like a 20 year old in vent. They never questioned my age when I was in a 18+ guild :)

Ok I am one of those people you dislike.  Our guilds require you to be 18+ years of age and require a cam, or in person interview, along with voice chat. Here are reasons why. Under 18 should not be exposed to the outbursts of adults in our voice chat. why? Because we do not feel it is appropriate for childrens minds to be exposed to the full world. The real world is not a nice place. And the young developing mind needs to be allowed to develop properly before being exposed to this.   Yes i do agree some teens are more mature than others, but they are still developing social skills and relationship skills that could be hampered if exposed to the reality of the full blown world if exposed too prematurely. CHildren need to know love, understanding, and the abilty to let things roll off of them like condensation on a glass before entering this environment. In the real world they will be put into situations they have yet to be prepared for and do not fully understand regardless of their maturity level. Let kids be kids before they become adults, so that they may be better adults when they finally get there.

I prefer to hang around other players who are parents as well. Ive found theyre generally quite a bit more patient, tolerant, and downright easier to hang out with in general. Ive rarely met someone who has kids who acts like a kid.

First as soon as kids learn the world isn't a nice place the better. Second have you seen what they put on MTV and even channels like ABC and CBS. I had a cousin start watching despreate house wifes before she was 10 and she could explain the whole show. I could understand not taking anyone under high school but at the high school they should start learning about the real world since they are pretty close to living in it. Also the stuff that goes on in high school today I find amazing. I live in amarillo and here the schools have the highest pregreancy rate 9 months after prom at least in Texas and one of the highest in the country.

It is good to see there are people like you and your guild out there to police the gaming worlds we love to have fun in. I mean if it wasn't for you and yours "protecting" the young ones from the harsh realities of everyday life...from inside a video game...you never know. They might strap on elf ears and go shoot up an auction house...

It will be interesting to see how todays kids are in 20 years. Itll also be interesting to see how they differ in social growth having spent a good deal of their time online. Some say it retards social growth, I guess time will tell.

I agree with you on this. But you do know most kids now a days are exposed to that in their teens. Even earlier. I've been in guilds where adults where talking and I would just mute my sound, because I had no idea wtf they where talking about. And it seems like most kids, wouldnt know.

Lot more to it than just learning outside stuff. A measure of maturity has to do with a lot of factors. Compassion, insight, tolerance, patience, just to name a few, these are things you learn through human interaction, and I mean real interaction, not just fake facades people put up while online.

When you're older you will understand.   Few things in life are more annoying than a squeaky voiced 12-14 year old on voice chat during a raid or PVP.

We are not just talking about in the video game here. Most guilds and groups within games these days use web cams, messengers and headsets to communicate as well. They are being exposed to the most extreme sexual content and twisted language.   Guild members often get together and party in reality,  and this is not an environment that a child should be exposed to until they are mature enough to handle these situations. They may use this content to form their opinions of relationships or how to deal with social settings, and that is  definately not a good thing.

And no we are not policing them, we just choose to not include them in our conversations.  We are not their babysitters, the internet should not be their babysitters, their parents should be.

its not the age of the person, its their maturity. i know of several young gamers who if you didnt already know, youd think they are over 18. i also know several older gamers who shout out cusswords for no reason, spam, and do just childish things all the time
