As always news of impending doom come from the most reliable of sources... LOL.
Frankly,... the most amusing part of that read was how obviously out of debt these guys are talking about business issues.
I guess with 10 Million players it's not surprising that WoW found some selfelected "propaganda ministers" to bash any new game that they feel afraid of.
I mean whom are they kidding ? It's just so obvious. The same thing is gonna happen when WAR is released and it will happen again with whatever is the next big release afterwards. Now, if they at least had a clue and at least "tried" to sound objective it might be a different story, but the load of biased bull these guys present again and again is really a waste of anyones time.
Uh, do you have any points to argue or are you just going to wave your flag?"
Begun the Fanboy Wars have.
Its funny because really the only thing they cann argue is that he used Xfure and since 100% of the players dont use it....
Of course its used as a gauge since numbers arent readily available and thye have removed any tool that could be used to gather numbers after people did just that.
Of course if you arent a flaming fanboy you do realize that even though 100% dont use xfire, neither do 100% of the population partiucipate in polls and yet politicians and the media use these to run the world.
Though I must say I was a little suprised that they disabled the server population and the /who command. I suppose if you just hide the problem itll go away?

I wasn't surprised. In fact I was surprised that it worked that way at all, most games disable this.
I can't say that I like that most games do this, but the only reason it reflects badly on Funcom is that like many things they did not bother to think about it before release.
"...All Age of Conan servers are listed as "Medium" population, despite huge discrepancies between realms, and the ingame "who" list functionality which allowed players to estimate activity levels has been disabled...."
I think this sentence speaks the most if its the truth, that the pop really is terrible....
Hey guys, I am the author of this blog post, I was surprised to see it mentioned here on another website. I appreciate any support or discussion. I think the main question remaining is, how long until we hear that AoC for XBOX360 is canceled?
Given microsoft dropped vanguard like a rotten potatoe Id say they may well kick it off the xbox, depends ofc on how the game runs but the core gameplay is why I left and it wont change for quite some time.
another question is what is WAR going to do to AoC numbers?

It all depends on where they are in development. Good read too btw, it makes sense to me at least. I played for 2 months and left for various reasons. With failure after failure I am concerned MMOs will never see good support from investors anymore. With how complicated these games are and the time/money crunch put on them it is definately a high risk investment.

another question is what is WAR going to do to AoC numbers?
That is a good question, I think the answer is pretty clear. A large portion of the folks who jumped on the Age of Conan bandwagon were just MMO fans bored with WoW and looking for the latest "new" game. When WAR is released, many of these novelty-seeking players will move on to it.
Given the launch of WAR, followed shortly by Blizzard's WOTLK, one can imagine it will be difficult for Funcom to compete and hold on to subscribers.
As much i hate to say this, i dont like to see companies go down a path to the point they cannot make some games, it has a chain effect, and its gamers like us that will suffer alot if these Big companies spend millions and the product is no good, they will just not have the finances to produce more games....

The development cycle is indeed important, and it's hard to imagine that Funcom has had many resources to devote to XBOX development with all the high-profile problems with the PC client/servers. The rushed nature of the whole launch, along with the overly optimistic reports we've heard from Funcom in the press, lead me to speculate that XBOX development is not far along, if it has begun at all.
You are right on target when you say the MMO is a tough sell to investors, and titles like this are not helping the situation. A vast majority of video games (even if they are not MMOs) turn out to be disappointing sellers, and the gigantic upfront cost of MMO development should scare people away from any studio that does not have an absolutely rock-solid track record for "best in class" success (such as Blizzard).

Survival of the fittest. This has been in Funcom's hands for a long time, and they botched it. I could have predicted as long ago as the launch of Anarchy Online's Shadowlands expansion which was headed by yours truly, Gaute Godager. It was a pathetic attempt at grafting high-fantasy onto a sci-fi game, probably intended to dip into EQ's subscriber base at the time. It got better of course, and AO is a pretty cool game now but that only began happening when Gaute moved to a different project.

We see this sentiment echoed in online forums from time to time, but I would encourage you to think twice before you take it to heart. It's not just universally better for us to have companies making games. An important part of the cycle of competition and improvement in a free market is the financial punishment doled out to competitors who follow irresponsible practices. If a company like Funcom releases a shoddy, unfinished, over-hyped product, we should want them to fail so others developers in the future know that they can't pull the same scam on the customer base.
If nothing bad happens when companies release trash video games, then we (as consumers) are just encouraging companies to feed us more trash.

Ohh I like that. didnt even think about that. AOC on PC will be around but that doesnt mean that the Xbox cant be cancelled. Couldnt happen to a nicer bunch.
This is the same blog thats had an AoC hate campaign going from the start? So its found a risk report, whats the big deal. Any project especially of this scale would be expected to have one. What does it actually say thats so bad? Have most the trolls in here even looked?
This guys blogs failry low rent, falling stock prices during a global economic down turn and now a risk report, what drama.
Id rather not see any new MMOs fail and I find the gloating nature of this blog pretty appalling.

This is actually the same guy that said AOC was going to unseat WoW back at release. I think he has a pretty fair opinion about it and isn't just some random AOC hater.

Maybe you could rear it. Then you would seee what the point was. You saw what you wanted. People hating on AOC so that you could complain about the hate. Kind of sad when you think about it. It was avery level headed article.
Another financial analysis from the very credible wow fan site. I guess they are so bored with WoW that they spend their time on anything, apart from the game they are "supporting".

No it wasnt. It posts a risk report and if you actually read the report theres nothing of note in it. Its just scare mongering in the same way as posting declining stock prices in his other article. Its the joy of the internet, copy and pasting and making yourself look clever or to try and make a point without making any effort. Lap it up if you like, Ive written risks report as part of my career and see nothing in it worth posting.
Nobody should believe a site named WOWRIOT talking about a game that is no WOW. You must have your opinion, you must search your own sources of information, but you should be more smart that reading that.

Good read, it confirmed the suspicions I already had.

A WoW fansite bashing AoC.
Didn't see that coming.
I think it was pretty un-flamey for anything regarding AoC lately. good read.
Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

The quarterly report is up in like a week. Once they release the financial info it should be interesting..
