Vanguard has the best combat mechanics and most skilled combat of any MMO. It has also has the most diversified, welld esiogned and fun classes in any mmo on the market. Its crafting mechanics are second to none although I would argue that crafting overall is quite unfinished and undeveloped.
Despite allt he good things vangaurd has some serious flaws.
1. It is presently not being funded or developed by SOE. At least for the most part. Since SOE took over the game in May 2007 they have added almost zero content to the game and done very little except introduce bugs and fix them months later.
2. The game has super fast leveling with an equal leveling speed to WoW.
3. There are still lots of bugs and the game is still unfinished.
If you can get past SOE being involved and the games flaws it is the best MMO on the market by a good margin.
Yeah, these all sound pretty good. Most polished and fun PvE experiences at the moment.
For PvP, LotRO has only MPvP. There's one zone where players can jump into the bodies of monsters to fight players. It's just a bit of endgame fluff thrown onto the side. Aside from that, it's a really nice PvE experience. Much more story-based than most MMORPG's too, though it's still very much your usual fantasy, level-based deal. I'm not going to say it offers much to _any_ fan of the books. I read the trilogy three or four times over plus the hobbit twice, and I was in the closed beta for LotRO, but I didn't sub. If you loved the books _and_ would love to see them expressed in a MMORPG world, LotRO might be very interesting to you.
CoX's appeal is its combat and character customization. It's pretty fun. If you're the obsessive compulsive type who needs lots of gear and other status symbols, it might not be your thing. It also has a bit of a steeper level grind than most MMORPG's, and the environments for missions can get a bit repetitive. That said, the world itself is really nice and pretty varied. If you're the kind of person who just wants a nice world and a bit of action for a few hours each week, great game to look at. Or if you love the whole comic book feel, you might find it interesting.
EQ2 has meh-looking combat. I honestly think that's the biggest barrier for new players. Combat animations can really just look outright terrible compared to even WoW or LotRO (which are merely passable in this regard). Some other annoyances might get to you. Invisible walls, for instance. On the flipside, very nice player character designs, a lot of classes to choose from, and a lot of races to choose from. Solid character customization, also. Not as good as CoX, but it blows away most other MMORPG's. At this point in time, there's quite a bit of PvE content, probably more than WoW. It's also fairly affordable. Their policy is that buying the latest xpac gives you everything. Original, all the xpacs, all the adventure packs, everything. So like $40 for the whole deal.
Finally, WoW. You'll never be forced to fight on a PvE server, unless you unwittingly flag yourself. That happens pretty rarely, though, and you can very easily avoid doing it. It has its ups and downs, though. Endgame is really a combination of four different kinds of grind. Rep, pvp, raiding, etc. All of it becomes a grind. That said, if you're just a casual who won't get to max level pretty quick, it should be pretty fun. If you do want to go the WoW route as a new player, I'd wait until WotLK. That will change up a bunch of stuff and probably enhance your leveling experience. Especially if you choose to play a class that is getting a big makeover in WotLK.

WoW barely has PvP, it has PvP but it sucks.../shrug
Wow, on a Normal server.
FFXI has NO PvP ... (ok some but it doesn't really count since it gives you no rewards, costs money, and is entirely a side game)
City of Heroes has very little PvP and its mostly optional
