Worth starting for an experienced mmorpg player?

KiamdeKiamde Member CommonPosts: 5,820

Well you all may know that I have played almost every mmorpg. I have heard that CoH is pretty much "MMORPG for Dummies" and it may be too simple in gameplay to entertain the more experienced players. And this is a very stupid question, but are there enough lowbies to group with? I started FFXI 3 months after it came out and even though it had many, many players, there were few lowbies.

Thanks

Yes...and no. Yes, because it is extremely good at what it does. No because it doesn't do much. I'll explain:

I've played EQ to lvl 65, Star Wars Galaxies to multiple mastered professions, Lineage II and City of Heroes. With that said, character creation (and roleplay due to character uniqueness) is better than any game I've ever played. The combat is extremely well done, killing villians is loads of fun, especially in groups. The combat sound effects are great also. The archtype system is well done, and it's lots of fun building your character and unlocking new powers...then using them on the bad guys. Heck, I even spent a few hours just standing around looking at all the new characters. It's really funny to see the stuff people can come up with in character creation. I remember laughing out loud when I saw a superhero next to me, a huge guy in a black suit with a flat top hairdo and a cigar in his mouth. His name: The Governator. There were many other notable characters running around the Pinnacle server as well.

But that's about it. For an experienced MMO player, we usually need something to keep us around longer than 60-90 days other than the drive to get to lvl 50. My highest lvl character in coh is 27...and I can tell you that the monotany is killing me. There is nothing outside of combat in this game, that's all there is to do. You can kill stuff, or you can hang out and chat. That's it. No PVP, no crafting, no items to obtain, nada.

I do recommend this game to everyone however. But for an experienced mmo player, just know that it may not hold your attention for very long, at least not until they add more to it via updates or expansions.

I'd recommend it for just about anyone.  However, you do have to realize going in that it's not a long-term comittment if you're an experienced MMORPGer.  It's great for 2-3 months, but then an experienced gamer will grow tired of the limitations.  However, there are a lot of games out there that are a lot less fun, and have an even shorter lifespan.

My advice: get it, play it knowing that you'll probably drop it in a couple of months, and enjoy it while you're playing it. It's been said here before, but it bears repeating:  CoH is the best Single Player Game you'll ever play online.  :)

Just to answer this question - There are "tons" of new lobies every day - One of the fun things about this game is creating new characters (whether themed {based on your favorite comic book character} or humorous {like the above mentioned Governator} just to try out new powersets).

This game allows players to have 8 chars per server & I think there are 10 servers = 80 chars.

Every time I have created a new char there were at least 20+ chars in the Outbreak (start) zone.

Hope this helps & hope you enjoy it.

What did you mean "It is the best single player game that you will play online"? Is it hard too group or too easy to solo, or is it that grouping is not worth the XP?

You may (or may not) want to check out Weapon-X's other posts where he sermonizes that CoH is not an MMO...

I'll leave it to you to decide. (I don't like making opinions for other people - just myself) image

    Testify!

Okay, FIRST off, let's clarify one thing: the guy that started this thread asked if it was worth starting for an experienced mmorpg player.  So anything I preach is based on the assumption that we're talking about folks with substantial backgrounds in MMORPGing.  If the original poster were just looking for information on the "fun factor" of the game, he'd hardly have brought up the "experience" issue.

I'm assuming that by "experienced" he means he's not a casual player.  So, let me climb back on the pulpit for a moment.

-You can level faster soloing than you can grouping.  Remember, I'm talking to EXPERIENCED gamers here, not casual gamers who insist on playing MA/SR Scrappers because they don't know any better.  I'm talking about a serious gamer who's done his homework.  Check out the hugely popular "Power Leveler's Guide" in the Blaster forum on the CoH board.  It's the standard used by just about EVERY serious CoH player.  It states, and quite correctly, that Grouping in CoH is something you do for fun- NOT for serious leveling.

Grouping is fine for casual players.  But we're not talking about casual players.  We're talking about experienced, serious gamers.  An experienced gamer is NOT going to intentionally play a Gimped class, just so they'll benefit from grouping.

My experince: I hit level 50 in four weeks with my Fire/Devices Blaster.  That's about three times faster than ANY Scrapper hit 50 on my server.  So you tell me: is an experienced player going to play a Scrapper?

But back to Grouping: had I grouped, it would have taken me much, MUCH longer to hit 50.  Sure, it was my choice not to group.  But then, should I really have been penalized for grouping?  Further, it's very difficult to maintain a consistant team.  It's not like EQ where you might play with the same people for years.  People come and go so fast, and build new characters so often, that I rarely played with the same people more than half a dozen times during my "grouping" phase with my first character.

But let's say I WERE inclined to Group.  As an experienced player, I would have quickly realized several things: The only classes I would ever need in a group is a Tanker with Provoke and a couple of other Blasters.  Again, we're talking about an EXPERIENCED player who isn't screwing around- a gamer who gets their jollys by being efficient, not from socializing.  I would never, EVER invite a Scrapper into a group, under any circumstances.  They can't Nuke, they can't Tank- they just suck.  EXP leeches is all they are.  Controllers and Defenders aren't much better.  I never took enough damage to need either class to Heal me, and frankly, as a Device Blaster, I could do my own CC much better than any Controller.

So assuming that I'm playing for competitive instead of social reasons, there's no real reason to group, and in fact, compelling reasons NOT to group.

There are other, more esoteric reasons why I compare CoH to a single player game, but I doubt many of you would appreciate the nuances.  But here's one anyway: The main point of an MMORPG for most experienced players is to see how well they can tweak their character- how strong they can make them via Stat adjustments and Loot.  CoH has NEITHER.  If you take two relatively competent players of similar levels and ATs, they will be almost EXACTLY identical.  The only way your level 20 Claws Scrapper is going to be any different from MY level 20 Claw Scrapper is if you made some totally boneheaded Newbie move like six-slotting "Brawl".

So if I'm NOT playing for the competitive factor of seeing how I can build my character in relation to other players, then why am I playing?  Well, to hit the next level, to get my next new Power.  In short, the same reasons I'd be playing a single player game.  I'm not playing in relation to others, as is the case of most MMORPGs.  I'm playing in relation to myself, ala a single player game.

Now, I've been around the block a few times, and know how these boards go.  I've just devoted paragraphs to my point of view, and odds are that the only response I'll get is "LOL u r stoopid".  Fine, whatever.  But the points I've outlined are what keeps CoH from being the King of MMORPGs.  It's a great game, except for the fact that experienced players just won't like it once the newness wears off.

You are equating Experienced Gamer with Power Gamer.

I have played a half-dozen or so MMOs - Experienced Gamer? Maybe. (Well you can have your own opinion about that), but I am most certainly a casual player. And that doesn't mean I don't spend the time playing, just that I am not in any type of rush when I play. I like enjoying myself & I enjoy the people (for the most part) that I team up with.

Power Gaming is the only way to play for some people (one of my nephews included). But there are a lot of Experienced Gamers that are not Power Gamers.

Now - here is a question for you: After you reached lvl 50 with your Fire/Devices Blaster did you go right out & make another Fire/Devices Blaster (because that is the primo build in this game), did you "gimp" yourself by trying out a different build or did you stop playing & get on the pulpit to delcare CoH is a single player game (because that is the way you played it)?

Whatever direction you went in, here's your lollipop for reaching 50 in 4 weeks! image (actually it's supposed to be a beer.)

Straight from a PowerGamers mouth.  Although you are basically right that this game does not have long term potential, "experienced" does not necessarily mean "Powergamer".   Maybe that will be my sig...

Ok I am making an tech assault rifle/devices blaster. He can solo well and it is cool weilding an asault rifle that is also a shotgun, m4a1, and flamethrower at the same time.

In City of Hero's  you can goup with players much higher level  due to the sidekick system, so don't really have to worry about there being lots of lowbies.     Like when you are lvl 15 you can group with lvl 25's if you wanted to.  Your health and powers are increased as if you were 1 level lower then your Mentor.   So if he was 26  you would be 25.

Alot of the lowbies are people who don't have the patience to level up past 15  and make tons of characters with all different configs and play them for a few levels  before starting over. For some the character creation process for this game is more fun then the actual playing.

If you like quests, being able to change weapons/armors as you want, hunting bosses for rare drops, and such   you won't find that in CoH.

Can't really compare CoH to FFXI, besides the fact that its a MMORPG.

But you have gotta love the enhancement system. Will city of villians add add villians to the characters you can make? Stupid me, I know but I don't read around this board much.
