Hello, I am seeking a new MMORPG to play, and as much as I've researched I haven't seen any games that fit my liking. I played Everquest for about 6 years, and loved every second of it. It was the perfect MMORPG up until some of the later expansions. Velius and Luclin were my favorites.
I was purely a Raider. That's what I liked to do, get together with my guild and kill stuff. This is what I'm seeking in a new game. I don't give a crap about PVP, I have an xbox and Halo / TF2 for that.
EQ2 I've played but don't like the direction it's going in, Reminds me of World of Warcraft too much.
Also, Currently I've been trying out Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, and while it seems almost perfect for me, from what I hear it has only one raid zone? And probably not enough backing to even consider an expansion any time soon.
So what I am seeking is a "hardcore" EQ1 Style End-Game Raiding MMORPG. If you know of one that is out or coming out in the next year or so, let me know. Thanks.

Omg you left out Kunark. My favs was Velious and Kunark by far. Anyway that ideas have been sent to the gutter. Rarely will you find a MMO where you had the same EQ1 style raiding premises.
I can't name any MMO out that would have this or upcoming, sorry.
Who let you in the VIP section?
I can't think of any other MMOs besides WOW and EQ where you are expected to spend 5+ hours a night raiding. Yea leveling is weaksauce in WoW, but the raiding is pretty much even more hardcore than EQ as you are expected to participate instead of zerg.
I was going to suggest VG, but yea not too much content right now. Probably never since its been out over a year with no new content.
You are kind of right about WoWs raiding. I don't believe it is harder than EQs, but it is EQ-esque. I still play World of Warcraft for its raids alone (currently waiting on new content however).
I guess I never got a chance to sit back and zerg stuff in EQ, I was always the main puller (monk) heh.
Thanks for the quick replies, guess I'll just have to keep raiding in WoW until something better comes along.
Ive played EQ1 for about 7 yrs and the only other game currently out there that gives me the same feel as EQ1 would be Vanguard.
With the current content available, you should be able to be entertain yourself for about 8 months - 12 months unless you get into a hardcore raiding guild. With the release of the new content patch this month, you will have yet another high level area to explore as well as another raiding situation which will introduce the flying mount, Pegasus.
though i didnt play the PC version of EQ hat much i was very into the ps2 version. if your a big endgame raid/big named hunting and all that then i would suggest the only MMO to really kill 2-3yrs of my life with.....FFXI.
now the thing with it is that its very time consuming, mainly because it requires grouping almost all the time to get things done, wich if you like that playstyle then its all good. also it basicly wants you to play it with a control (it was built for consoles on PC/PS2/X360) so if you hate console gaming or dont wanna learn to get used to it, then dont bother.
the game IMO has probly one of the vastest and biggest verity in endgame/late lvl stuff to do, wich is why i adored the game (but keep in mind u need alot of free time and hafta work in groups of course) they have everything from hunting 1 time every 24 hr poping Named Monsters(even some that pop every 3 days) from just fighting with 100's of ppl to protect the last expansion packs city. There is quite alot to do, so if Endgame is your..well game, his might be your answer.
i had recently quit like 5 months ago (i was playing on and off alot) and tryed a bunch of stuff to replace that game. i tryed EQ2 for a couple months, but i didnt like how if felt like a button masher on macros, and how much solo you really end up doing. then i tryed Vanguard, wich was amusing, but you need a really nice PC to play it well, and it was still pretty empty due to the bad launch and the world being so masive, and feeling so empty. after that i played vast amounts of trials and free games to stuff like WoW/LOTRO/DDO wich all were every simple style and were very solo friendly wich i cant stand being an FFXI/EQOA player were grouping was the main intent.
all i an really say is there has been and is nothing PVE style that will grab my attention for quite some time that will be group heavy and endgame heavy for a while (dying to see when the new Square Enix MMO is comming) so im going to try WAR next and mabey il get into RVR gameplay.
good luck on your hunt, but nothing really will be like your first MMO
Anarchy online is the closest game ive found to everquest I never tried vangaurd so I cannot speak for it. But in anarchy online you basicly have the same amount of freedom loads of content loads of content for raiding and it has pvp and lots of other features they have a unlimited trial of the classic game its completely free and if you want all the expansions i think its like 7 dollars then after that its 15 a month or 100 dollars per year whichever payment plan you choose.
Anyways im getting the expansions soon but I hear there 50 times better then the classic, this game actually makes you think like in everquest and its easy to solo but groups are more encouraged for more exp and because your class truly shines like in everquest. Plus it has alot of lore its very story driven.

i agree with the op. eq2 is a wow clone to me as well. the only thing that makes it eq'ish is the races and the world. the gameplay itself is just like wow.
very true, it went from being more like EQ 1 and what ive heard and from what ive played, they made it more "newbie and solo execessible" wich i didnt like among other reasons.

Eq2 as a WoW clone? Strange, considering that EQ2 is older then Wow...

People say that line of garbage, about EQII and never explain why it's a WoW clone. Go figure.

its a wow clone now because they saw the success of wow and decide to take out the non-casual aspects of the game, i.e corpse runs and a harsh death penalty..which were in the game at release.

I thought so to, that EQ2 was older, I remember being in the beta for this long before WoW. Course I am getting older now and my memory maybe starting to go.
And I really don't see how they same thing... If look at all your mmorps they all really based the same.

The reason it is a WoW Clone now, is because they made the game so damn easy. It's a decent game until you get to Level 70 and enter Rise of Kunark, where you start soloing the rest of the way if you want to get decent xp.
It's obvious what happened, 1-70 They had a more Everquest style mentality, Group up, get xp, have fun exploring shit. Now they just want you to Solo quest every level. It's kind of funny actually that you have to group up for good xp, until you get to 70 when you can solo the high level content. Don't get me started on Rise of Kunark Raiding either, biggest joke ever.
By the way, I decided to just go back to EQ1. Reactivated my 80 Rogue and probably won't look back until Aion comes out. Sick of trying to find what I like in the new games, because its just not there. EQ still has a community, and it's probably where I'll be until the servers shut down, or a company decides to make an actual MMORPG.
good for yah, nothing is never like your first great experince, just keep that there is somthing that you know you want to try and just hang on to what you love until thre is somthing you might enjoy next.
