Since most MMOs are based off of well known intellectual properties I think the problem is a lack of an existing system.  Vampire based RPGs have been tried and failed.  I think, White Wolf's "Vampire the Masquerade" games haven't really managed to net money for White Wolf and so they're not willing to jump into an MMO with both feet.

A developer could produce an entirely unique vampire-based MMO but if you recall, White Wolf was very lawsuit happy when the Underworld movie came out.  So, the challenge now, is to create a unique and engaging MMO that has nothing in common with White Wolf's  settings, characters, rules etc.  You can see why people aren't running out to make this game, knowing that everything they do will be looked at very closely by White Wolf Inc.

I think many pen and paper RPG's can see a future where computers and online content play a large role.  Dungeons and Dragons certainly went after it, recent information from fans of Call of Cthulhu seems to indicate a move in the other direction although, Chaosium is now offering PDF versions of many of their titles as is White Wolf.

It seems that a "World  of Darkness" MMO is in the works so we'll just have to wait and see.

holy crap - what's with vampires these days?!

There seems to be a ton of vampire fiction hitting the bookshelves as well...

is this just an emo flood of some sort?

What about Dark Eden? That's been around for a years and im sure there is a new one out allready called Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines never tryed either but they do exist.

I would imagine World of Darkness will fill that void with a AAA MMO. In theory at least.

If I see one more film, book or game about a repentant, noble vampire out to help people, whilst at the same time usually falling into a relationship with a beautiful young woman whom he rescues, I'll bloody (no pun intended) scream.  The vampire genre is a one-trick genre which we've all seen far too many times.

    So true Dib!

We want a gorefest of kick ass vampires who give us a good kicking but then we try the dumbest thing possible and then kick there ass!

Suppose dusk till dawn was like that oh well :)

I think it would be better if you could set up some medieval or dark ages world and then bring them vamps, werewolves, banshees, or whatever underworld creature and let them battle over the world. What do you say?

Maybe because if there is a vampire online rpg the game will be dark... because the setting is always night!! that nly my opinion

To add to World of Darkness, there'll be  Dark Eden and umm...Buffy: The vampire slayer...

I kinda think the novelty of such a game would wear thin pretty quickly. Think about it, your a vamp, but so is everyone else. Basically you spend your days camping NPC towns for victims or fighting werewolves in turf wars.

The story is just so generic that it wouldn't matter anyway and eventually you'd be bored and anyone who wasn't a hardcore roleplayer wouldn't even make it that far.

maybe the idea of a vampire mmorpg is overused already.. so game developers stay out of it?

"What is it that the gamers want from these games and why is it not given to them? We were playing these games ourselves, that's why we know it was not being done. So we moved in the opposite direction. We thought about what the users wanted, what we wanted, and why it wasn't happening and how it could happen." - Tasos Flambouras
