Ranked 60th MMO on this site

WicoaWicoa Member UncommonPosts: 1,637

My copy of conan is coming today and I am seriously concerned.  The ranting on these forums aside and even if you brush them aside with "they are the minority" you cannot ignore that the quiet majority have voted this game so low.

I am tempted to leave it in its wrapper for 6 months.

(I used to play world of warcraft and loved it however I got a sparky new 8800gt which has issues with the game like many people and Im hoping wotlk will sort them out.)

Several things worry me about aoc, one is the extreme control on the official forums.  Blizzard whether you hate their game or not allow pretty much freedom of speech unless you are seriously abusive.  Whether they respond to certain issues though is another matter at least they allow people to voice their concerns.

It seems that the game is very detached from its community which is a shame and is essential to a successful operation.

I am an EU player and am waiting for that game with the X-Factor that I had in the first 2 years of Darkage of Camelot and 1st year of planetside.

I've been playing MMOs since 2000. If there is one thing I've learned that if there is A LOT of pissing and moaning about a game there is a reason for it.

I suggest you try out the game yourself, no doubt its still quite unfinish and with bugs around. But who knows?! You may like it actually...

Try the game out, cancel the game within the free month, oh make sure you delete the CC info so Failcom cant scam you even more. Then add our avatar and start bashing Failcom.

Seriously, I dont think you can resell the game for retail price, might as well give it a try. The game is not bad, for me (I didnt get into that AoC hype before launch) Failcom's patches are more concerned than the game itself.

better yet.... return it and get your money back.... then wait six months and if the forums get better (providing the game doesnt shut down) you can buy it again.... and try it.

seriously though..... dont waste your money

Don't open it, return it for a refund.

Wish someone would have warned me about it before I opened it so I could have got a refund.

  • RudydogRudydog Member Posts: 144

I want to say to you, try this game out... this is the fair and freethinking side of me.

But.. from my own experience, save yourself a few bucks and hours of your own life and avoid even going through the extensive install and patch download.

Right now it just isnt worth it.

If you do go ahead, you will come back here after the first 2 days of play and cut everyone down and tell us how awseome the game looks and is.

in another few weeks or another month depending on your playstyle and time, you will come back here winging about this and that... like the rest of us.

After which you will don the Failcom sig and continue to post comments that have caused you your ban from the AOC forums.

What pokemon will you be and goodluck :P

    End of the day enjoy!

I say open it and give it a try. I broke down and bought CoD 4 yesterday and stayed up way too late on that damn TV station map and I will probably finish the game in less than two weeks. The point is if you can enjoy AoC for two weeks then it will all be good. I myself enjoyed AoC up to the mid twenties before it began to grow stale for me.

    I miss DAoC

  • RudydogRudydog Member Posts: 144

I wouldnt compare my experience with AOC up there with COD4, not sure if ive ever played a game i just loaded onto my pc and finished from start to finish in one sitting.

Lucky i call my time with work.... all i can say.

I think your comment Jack is testimony to this game.... and why this shouldnt be classed truely as an MMORPG.

2 weeks is all you really get im afraid at the moment :/

  • CharSolCharSol Member UncommonPosts: 47

I got about 6 weeks out of it before I got tired, which isn't so bad for me.  About the same as everquest 2, longer than vanguard and a just barely longer than DDO.  I say open it, the game has problems, it lacks content, has bugs and has some rather extensive balancing issues but I enjoyed it.  What I did play of it I really enjoyed and I could still be playing now if the content hadn't almost dissapeared by mid 60's.

Don't go into it expecting the best game you will ever play and just try to have some fun while it lasts.  It's not as bad as people say, yes it's not great and I was dissapointed.  But then again I expected a game to revolutionise MMO's and be everything I ever wanted and it wasn't, likely the same scenario that causes all of the bitter people to still be floating around now driving off new players.

Look at galaxies, noone has anything good to say about it at all yet there are still people playing it and enjoying it.  I suggest you find out for yourself if you are one of the people who can enjoy the game for what it is or someone like me who finds they can be dissapointed in the game for what it isn't.

  • KerithKerith Member UncommonPosts: 104

Honestly -- it all depends what you're expecting. If you bought it for the PvP fun you probably will be disapointed. It is not the golden goose of mmos -- however it is a fun game with a nice story and meaningful quests (most of the time at least). I am a casual player, played it since launch and I am in my mid 50s atm with my highest character (and I still have tons of quests to do btw).

If you compare it to a single player experience with between 50-200 hours of playtime for the price you payed I would say it is definitely worth the price. It has of course not yet the content a game like WoW has.

Well ... what CharSol said while I was typing this :P

  • openedge1openedge1 Member Posts: 2,582

    Count it in hours.

Right now, most new games last between 10-40 hours max

AoC is worth 40-80 easily if you enjoy reading stories, and experiencing the game from the start. Even try some alts.

Do not expect the next month to be paid for, as you WILL cancel.

Of course you can wait until the "Fall"

I have it on good authrotiy that something major is coming that according to my source will make AoC "just fine".

We have all heard that before.

Thank you all for your concern about whether to open it or send it back.

However this copy is a promotional copy handed to me by a close family member who is in charge of a multimillion buying budget for games.  I usually play them and then give him a mini review having been a small time reviewer and let him know what I think (since Im the mmorpg fruit).  Im also trying to spread my habit through the family!

I do usually buy my mmorpgs but he knows I like this genre and got this for me.  Tbh I would have pre-ordered conan but I knew that back then my pc was not up to handling it and I'd rather stick with something I can make look fine and not worry about.

It is just a case of should I leave it in its box or go for it.  Im thinking wait since Im having alot of fun in TF2 at the mo.

Pay no attention to the haterz. I suggest you install the game and try it out for yourself, it's funny how people hate the game so much that they spend their time coming here to post negative comments. I am playing the game right now. This is my honest opinion:

    1. Is the game Buggy? Yes it is, I don't agree that it is so buggy that it is unplayable, Ive gone countless hours without dealing with bugs,  but they are actually doing a great job on fixing those issues with each patch.

    2. Is the game boring? No, I don't think so at all..Games are only as fun as the individual allows it to be.

    3. Hows the combat system? 1 word "AWESOME" the combat system rocks and it is the 1st of its kind, no other game has fatalities in it, making it exciting to finish off a mob by cutting off his head in slow motion. (There are many other fatalities in the game, depends on the character) The combat system owns every other mmo in its genre. It requires more skill than just simple clicking of an Icon, if you miss a directional arrow it could spell death for you, so it requires that you interact more AKA "Skill" it requires more skill and thought because you never know what to expect from the enemy.

If you don't like that kind of combat system and you want to play something that requires " NO" skill at all then I would suggest  WOW, EQ2 where all people do is click click click icons or spam macros.

    4. Is the game going to DIE out? No I think that despite some bugs, Funcom will and have fixed the major issues that are causing problems for some of the players. I have characters on 2 PVE and 2 PVP servers and the servers are usually packed with people, all depends on the time of the day that you play. The key here is to learn to be patient and problems will get fixed.

Try the game out for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Voting polls are worthless when it doesn't include every single mmo player, not everyone comes to this site.

No dont worry nothing fishy going on here.  I have the choice in what I want to do but my point was I dont send it back anywhere to get a refund.

He doesnt mind when I throw in what I have to say.  Let me put it another way.

He likes his console games rarely touches anything to do with pc games and especially mmorpgs.  So he will throw them my way then once I've played it let him know what I think of it.

Its a very casual situation.  I used to be a writer/reviewer of games so he takes what I have to say seriously and into meetings etc.  Or at least thats what I think he does. Its up to him what he does with his info.

    Thanks for all the responses.

man seriously i dont know what the word boring means for you, if you seriously spent enough time in that game and you enjoy, let me say that you don't need much, you are either a very casual gamer, or a kid who get stuned by graphics more than the content.

and about the combat system, it just suck ass, you like it i dont, maybe just tast, it isn't dynamic, combo system sux, client unstable server unstable on mass pvp you miss click your combo alot cuz of lags freeze (timer), basicly a caster is more aware of what happening than a melee class becuz of combos, shield system completly useless, 1up and 2 to the left best you can do, dont need to use shields on pvp, heh yea you can do a skill and slide around your target (like fps jumping)

just lol only casual or kids can like this game, cuz  seriously way too boring for hardcores

  • ZekiahZekiah Member UncommonPosts: 2,483

I'd send it back personally. But if you plan on playing, I wouldn't pay for more than a month at a time and when you cancel, make sure you clear your CC information and keep tabs on your bank statements.

TBH, this is the worst mismanagement of a MMO I've ever seen. And the game itself is pretty pathetic. There seems to be no plan or direction, they just slap broken patches together like trained monkeys in a computer room hoping something eventually works.

It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

Not disagreeing as I am no fan of the game in its state but you do realize that as "hardcore" you are very much in the minority. Maybe not on these boards but in gaming world for sure. A hardcore player is the last one I would ask for an opinion an nearly any game.

Companies are looking for the average player who will enjoy the game and be a paying cutomer for many months/years.

That being said my opinion on the game has been put out there enough to show that I am no fan of this mess they have created.

OP, in regards to Woody1974's post, topic #1.   The game IS unplayable at end game.   Latency spiking in raids, bugs/lag in seiging (the two most important aspects of "end game") are clear evidence.  Anyone who has spent time experiencing that content, understands that even if all the issues don't affect them - it affects many many people.

To say none of the game is unplayable, is simply not true.   Example:  2000+ post latency spike thread in their technical support forums.  What makes it worse, is that Funcom refuses to acknowledge the issues, and deletes/closes threads that hit too close to home.

  • Bad games are bad. Even the AoC official forum is filled with the evidence that it is a terrible waist of cash.

    1) It very much IS UNPLAYABLE at the end game. And when you can play it runs like a piece of shit.

Oh and patches "fixing stuff every week" ? Bullshit, patches break more then they fix!

    2) Yes. When you get to only grinding over and over you wonder why you are doing that in an MMO these days.

    3) Slow, clunky, boring, undynamic. These words can much better sum up the combat system.

    4) Yes I think it will die.

If You say that the game is unplayable @ 80 then why in your 3rd comment did you say it was boring, clunky, and undynamic. Couldn't have been too much of any of that if you played all the way to lvl 80. Doesn't really make much sense to keep on playing if all that was occuring, but thats just my opinion.

    1) I disagree with you.  Yes I have 1 lvl 80 and a few mid lvl 50 chars. End game I have raided and castle sieged/defended. The game is very playable even @80. There were many places I didn't have a chance to go to because I soloed my way to 80 and now that I am in a guild we are raiding those places.

    2) Name 1 mmo that doesn't have gridning involved

    3) Probably because you have a low end commodore64 system.

    4) Probably isnt the 1st $50 people have wasted on games or anything else for that matter.

Love your number 3 always fanbois saying crap like this. I think the game could have been good, but imo it was fundamentally messed from the start. The world feels small, combat was ok, community is terrible, and last but not least it s run by a company that has no clue what they re doing. Enjoy the game if you do, but theres no problem someone posting why they don t.  It won t die but it will be way down there on the sub numbers with games like Vanguard imo.
