very interesting indeed. This might be something to watch.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
Excellent! Thanks for the info!
Thanks for putting that up, i wasnt able to catch it because i was working all day.
It looks very promising indeed. Can only hope that they will come up with a way to make diplomacy an engaging experience for pve content in addition to the exploration and combat mechanics. This will definitely be one that I keep my eyes on.

hmm
that list looks interesting but the video i saw was horrible.
and no mention of non-combat stuff so I guess this is 100% focused on blowing stuff up
The only thing I don't like about this is the lack of a player crew.
That won't stop me from playing though.
I liked what I saw so far looks like we're getting that much closer to getting a decent sci fi alternative to eve.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
hell ya

I thought the graphics looked pretty tight. I can't wait to see more videos and screenshots.
Gameplay details are very intriguing. I like the idea of one server, if they can pull it off. I wonder though if that means the game will be highly instanced, like guild wars.
Being an Eve player this is what I was really into. A single server would be amazing, and I'd love to see some territorial conquer via the starbase construction. There are days where I wish I could just go off and explore, wish there was more of that within Eve. I expect STO to be a niche game so you can literally go off on your own for a bit.
Things that troubled me was that mention of a non harsh death penalty and that he made no mention of a seamless or at least non instanced space. I could live with a system similar to what Eve has where each instance is kind of hidden and different zones. Just so long as it is not so heavily instanced that you can play through it like a single player game.
It's extremely early though, something to watch over the next few years and see how it progress. From what I've seen so far, I'm very impressed. If that was truly gameplay footage (pre-alpha?) then it looks like it could be a very solid title.

If ever there was a time to rise if ever there was a time to join hands with our brothers that time is now. At this exact junction in history we have within our grasp the means to loosen our tormentors hold and win freedom for our kin. Opportunities are there to be taken.
Brothers, we must rise.

And all of these features are to be made available in about one year's time?
Something is going to have to give; either the time or some of the features. Though there are those features listed as "after launch," I believe more would need to be slotted over as well.
And that is why...
Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. I like what I am hearing so far. The question is whether Cryptic can deliver a polished bug free game. I wouldn't mind if they keep the initial feature/zone set small if they can do it well.
A travesty in my oppinion but that's just moi .
I hope it works out for those looking forward to it still, I just have can't seem to get excited about a Start Trek game where everyone is a captain, almost completely destroying what was always the best part of any Star Trek story... the crew and it's ship and the relationships that were built.
Meh... Just me I guess.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
Well it's the community that has come up with this one year release date nonsense. Officially the only thing we've heard from Cryptic is less than 3 years which sounds a little more reasonable considering that they already have a working engine.

Woot for not being level based!
I'll second that and also add that having player ship interiors that are customizable is a big plus for this version as well.

Where did you hear the game would be released in a year? Jack said most likely less than three years, because of the engine they're using. It'll definetly release after Champions Online, which he said would be coming out April 09. They haven't been working on it very long, but it was nice to see the alpha footage already. Much more reassuring than what Perpetual had been able to show.
While I do beleive that we will see some feature shuffling before launch, I think they'll manage to deliver most of which was said. The issue of a single-server is what I'm concerned with most right now though, he didn't sound too sure about it, but made it seem like it was very possible..

I think the 1 year came form the "legalities" portion of the contest awarding "boxes" and subs. In that, they say; "at least 1 year after the contest ends" for the box to be awarded.
So launch date is between "at least 1 year" and "under 3 years", officially.
Im conflicted on a single server.
One on hand it means tons of players everywhere and thats always a good thing
On the other hand, it diminished the odds to make a name for yourself. The odds of finding a planet first and naming it goes way down on a server with 250k players compared to multiple servers with 5k players on it
They would need to make a massive galaxy with thousands of planets for individuals to be able to make their mark.
Also what happens to roleplaying on a single server ? Forcing everyone onto a single server means forcing roleplayers and non-roleplayers together. And its been my experience that roleplaying dies in that environment.
I'll 3rd that.
I love that Cryptic isnt going the level route !
Kudos to them
That is indeed where I got the 1 year item. But I haven't read deeply into STO as of late, pretty much burned out on it for now. Perhaps in 3 years that burn out will be over with. Just not enough to get excited about as now STO can be up to 3 yrs away, and many things can happen from now until then.
Now however, if Crypic were to engage the community, then those 3 years will go by quickly. I doubt this will happen, even though I would like to be strongly proven wrong.
A key element for MMO's is to build a community, even during development. Tap into the player base. There are many players who would like to contribute, be it by characters, lore, quests, or even models. That is what is going to make MMO's stand apart from another, blending a Metaverse with a MMO.
And Gor'ram it, I wish I could tell more.
