Anticipation

Can you feel it?  Does your heart pound a little faster as you watch the download of your beta client?  Do you wish that your average 75 kb/s could be 1 mb/s so this stage of getting into a new game can be over?

I love the anticipation of a new MMO.  I love the way my mind races, daydreaming of battles and glory!  I had that anticipation in September of 2004 playing that 1 week beta test of World of Warcraft.  I had that feeling after I pre-ordered Lord of the Rings Online and got access to closed beta.  I had that feeling when I bought Age of Conan at the store during work and couldn't wait to get home to install it.  I have that feeling right now with my torrent running in the background downloading the whopping 9 gbs of files for Warhammer.

Oh the excitement.  Getting woken up by my 1 year old at 3 am in the morning wasn't so bad.  2 hours later I'm sitting here staring at my progress bar as it just breaks 40%.  ETA 20h.

20 hours?  Hmmm, I wonder, well it won't be ready when I get home from work 14 hours from now.

Oh the excitement.

I even text messaged a buddy of mine who convinced me to buy Age of Conan who is now playing Warcraft again that I got access to the beta.  Just to rub it in.

I can't wait.

I went into a friends office at work who I got to play warcraft after it first came out and who still plays cause he really thinks female nightelfs are really girls and gives thousands of gold to them to tell him I'm onto my next MMO.  He just laughs and says 'let me know! and I just bought a 2000 gold staff for 'hot chick' (whose really a fat hairy assed man)'.

Maybe I won't go to work and just stare at the progress bar all day.  But I'm sure my wife will kill me.  But that's what this is all about.  Excitement.  Fun.  Entertainment.  What better way to entertain yourself than playing a MMO?  Ok I can name a few, but think of the children; oh wait, they still play battlegrounds in warcraft.

I LOVE THIS!!!

Think smart, mate. Since no one knows when the Beta will open..don't use the 'goodwill' time you've built up (if any) with the wife to watch the progress bar. Once it opens, play all night and around the clock the next day (calling out of course). Even if you aren't in the first wave of logins by a couple hours..you'll get more bang for the buck.
