Is it just me or does it seem that most PVE centric games have great communites, helpful, polite and fun to play with. EQ, FFXI, AC,COH,LOTRO have played them all and made friend in each. The PVP centric game have been the opposite. Is is just me or is this the norm?

Might be just you.
I've played Lineage 2, still do from time to time, for years which I consider a fairly PvP centric game and I've made amazing friends there.
Other than a few select games which seem to be filled with complete douche bags I've met very interesting people all around, whether the game was PvE or PvP centric.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
I am noticing that pve only games do have a nicer overall community. Of course you will find nice people and make good friend in a pvp game but in pve oriented games based on my experience you will generally find a more friendly and helpful community.
I returned to Dark Age of Camelot recently and decided to give their pve only server a try. The server is called Gaheris and I was amazed at how nice and helpful the community is there. There are many nice people on the rvr servers but this Gaheris server is just amazing in how many nice people are playing there. If anyone is looking for a game to play I recommend giving the 2 week free trial a try and choose the Gaheris server.

I think that this may lay in the nature of PVE and PVP themselves. PVE, by it's nature, is co-opperative, and strongly suggests that players work together. This sort of setting brings in alot of people who aren't of a competitive nature, and are generally helpful. PVP, typically, is very competitive and brings in people with strong competitive streaks by the droves. (Out of all of them, FPS-type games tend to be the worst of the batch. This expends even to online console shooters.)
It's not universal, of course, but this tends to be the norms that I've noticed.

Cooperation is nice. But PVP is harsh, so people that is emotionally unable to cope with conflict can't play PVP games. On a PVP game, you will be killed, and live with it. This to me, force people to be more mature, in a way. Not everything is cooperation, conflict is also important.
