Title says it all.
Without the biggest name in PC gaming the Star Trek universe will be a very little star that won't shine for long.
An MMORPG like so many others with so many lost features and so many bugs.
Star Trek deserves more than this.
Comon Blizz with all that money: buy the rights and bring us some real SF instead of green orcs and devils from Diablo.

lol@blizz fanbois, they're not that good, get over them.

Just cause blizzard was succesfull with WoW, does not translate succsess into any other game they plan to make.
I like cryptic having the game, they seem to be bringing the game in the right direction, It would be hard to see blizzard use the IP in any shape or form, ST doesn't really fit thier product style.
You are completely wrong. Look at CCP. Never heard of them before EVE online, and that game is still going strong years later. Cryptic has two high quality MMOs under their belts and a huge fanbase for the IP already.
I beleive the game is in good hands, and personally would not want Blizzard anywhere near the IP.
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
LMFAO!! Blizzard fanbois crack me up. If Blizzard made this game it would consist of 3v3 phaser battles in holodecks, daily mining missions to build up rep with other factions, and epic uniforms straight from a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Exactly. Why would Blizzard be interested in the StarTrek IP when they have their own space IP that is a sure fire hit when it releases?
World of Starcraft anyone?
The pattern ah yes, I can see it...... Blizard is full of creativity, talent, and original ideas.
You do realize that Blizzard has a long list of best selling PC games that put most other companies to shame right? I think just about every game they have made has been a crazy success.
I do prefer to see big IPs going to smaller developers though. I think cryptic made one of the most boring and shallow MMOs I have ever played, but I respect that it was a well made game with a lot of love put into it. Even though I didn't enjoy the game I think cryptic has lots of potential and look forward to their next games.
Weird alot of the haters are already proclaiming that STO will be like Eve in space, and WoW on the ground, and yet this guy whats it to be even more like WoW
Blizzard has never been known for doing anything inventive, or new. STO would be too much of a jump for them. Like someone else posted they'd just take their starcraft and polish a bit more if they were doing a MMO. Blizzard also is not in any way interested in parting with its money. Do you have any idea how little of their WoW riches they reinvest in WoW?
As For me I've played WoW, and EvE both have things going for it. So if STO is anything like a mix of the two I figure it'll probably be pretty good. No i don't want to have to have a whole guild just to take the starship out of Dock, and No I don't want to be forced to play a lame class like say communications officer, or wait around to try and group with one and or many other niche limited character types/players just to get the old Starship out of dock.
I'll admit that Blizzard does great with their own IP's, because they dictate the canon. Remember the reason the Warcraft IP was made? They epic failed at using someone elses established IP. Not to mention that their games lack depth that isn't in the form of massive time sinks and pretty phat lewtz(starcraft being the exception as it is one of the greatest rts games ever made).
Cryptic has already ruined this game for trekkies, the only thing that could save this game is a chance that gameplay is unique, fun, and holds the attention of the modern day gamer.
If I were to pick a developer to do this IP justice, it would be without a doubt, Bioware. They pay attention to canon and detail more than anyone, something extremely important to die-hard sci-fi fans, like me and many of my friends.
First of all, how has cryptic ruined the game? And second of all, Bioware and Areanet are two developers i'd give the IP cos they know how to make MMOs. Blizzard is good at refinement and doing what they've already done so well you'd think they innovated or something but nevertheless you don't know what they'll do until you give them the IP to work with.
This is not a game.
blizzard would never touch an already established IP with a 10 foot pole. they have mentioned this before. that's why they make their own.
To be honest I think Turbine should have been the ones to take the lead with STO. While not perfect games both DDO and LotRO are excellent examples of their IPs.
And I would like to see what they could do with a sci-fi setting.
I have to disagree, Cryptic is no newcomer having been the original greators of "City of Heroes" and "City of Villians." Basicly they are using the same graphics engine for Star Trek which has better graphics and more depth and better customization ability then "World of Warcraft" could ever dream of. I believe that Cryptic is the correct company for this project and I am looking forward to its release.

Lol
Interesting concept, if Blizzard created it, I might play it. But Star Trek stays with Cryptic.

Turbine already destroyed 2 of my favorite worlds : Dungeons and Dragons and Middle Earth.
And they did destroy it in an EPIC way (meaning I get a rash every time I tried to play their games).
So tx for a third destruction.
well nobody likes my idea...
So it'll be back on track to an unpolished broken MMORPG with 40 K users and badly written code.
Pity.
)
I think the 150k-200k people that play the Game of the Year Award winning City of Heroes may disagree with you on that one Bunkie. Look I play WoW and think it's a good game for what it is but it has 0% originality in it. It's just a highly polished rehash of all that came before it. Star Trek Online has to be something different to be successful and Blizzard just isn't up to that task, period. They are very combat centric in all of the games they have made up to this point and STO would just be more of that if they got their hands on it. A Blizzard made STO would be doomed to failure right from the get go.

AC is the best game Turbine ever launched. Unfortunately the followed it up with AC2. Not sure why when you have a good game, and you "fix" it, it becomes so broken no one wants to play it anymore.
I like Blizzard they have impecible production values that all mmo producers would do well to follow but are you sure you just aren't being jaded by an earlier success of theirs when you act as if they are some kind of masters of lore I loved wow while it gave me what I was looking for and even upon leaving can admit it is a fun game still but the lore certainly doesn't jump out at you which it certainly should considering they own the ip.
Just my opinion NCsoft can do just as well as Blizzard and for the record if you were going to push for a company to take over why not Bioware they have atleast shown they can produce engaging video game stories using others ip Blizzard has not.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Their own?! All they do is rip off already existing IP and change the name. Warhammer existed a long time ago before warcraft. Blizzard tried to buy the IP but it didnt work right. So ''they made their own''.
-------------------------------------
Before: developers loved games and made money.
Now: developers love money and make games.
the lore is already written... not understanding why the first company couldnt hack a story that has already been written over a 40 year period.. now this company has it.. id bet this second company is like made up of old people from the first company it always works like this
I played WoW for a couple years. It was fun but I would not want them to touch Star trek at all.
Personally, I think cryptic will instance it to death. Thats my biggest worry. In their interview, you hear how you will run missions and I think back to all those stupid missions in COH. Instance after instance after instance. I think there is a time and place for instances in any game but frankly cryptic has me worried on how they are going to do these missions in ST. Mission instances become extremely boring and very quickly. Here is hoping that instances are used sparingly!
Is it just me or does anyone else find this absolutely hilarious? Talent, yes. Blizzard has a talented staff. Original ideas? Do you really want to go there?
Every day, many Blizzard fans fall prey to a huge number of haters inhabiting MMORPG.com. It is a cruel place to like Blizzard, but if your heart is pure and intent clear, fear not, your love is not in vain.
Ofcourse the game would be of higher quality if developed by Blizzard, the only question is if Cryptic will dare to experiment with some new ideas Blizzard would hesitate to implement. If what we get is just a mesh of usual MMO mechanics in standard (hopefuly) quality... well, it's still better than leting PE develop it.
Blizzard makes great games, it's just that some poeple want alternative realitys to live imaginative lives, that is something I think Blizzard will never try to make, because that won't be possible for many years to come. Uncanney Valley is no friend of game developers.
