415 000 Customers per August 14 2008

IKShadowIKShadow Member UncommonPosts: 783

Well this thread was made for trolls who predicted 50K players by August.

http://www.funcom.com/funcom/frontend/files/CONTENT/Funcom_Q208_presentation.pdf

Btw 415.000 is not really a good news couse thats basically means they lost around 60% of customers, and no need to wonder why the game have some problems and basically no end game content.

p.s. I guess the topic name 415.000 customers will provoke a lot of trolls.

415k is the number they have in the Q2 financial report, which means those numbers are dated June 30th.

All companies have a time buffer from the closure of the quarter to the release of the report. In that time they get the numbers together, and submit the report for reviewing and aprooval. For example when you close a financial year, you have a couple of months to release the reports, depending on the law of the country. Where I live for example, you have untill march next year to release the end of the previous year reports.

Why do fans try to twist every stat to the positive side.    It just the flip side of a troll.

415,000 subs as of June 30 not Aug 14.   Get your facts straight.    While I no way of knowing whether subs went up or down in the month and half since June 30.    I wouldn't put money on 415,000 or higher.

Edit:   Moodah beat me to it.

Do not forget. Out of this, the below 400k play on a daily basis...

Sorry....but, I mean...really, how many are REAL players.

  • AzrileAzrile Member Posts: 2,582

    A couple of corrections.

415k was as of June 30th

415k includes the free accounts of anyone who bought the box after June 1st and have never actually 'subscribed' to the game.  This is probably a good portion since the game was only released 10 days prior to that.

Also to note, no other game company counts players in their first free 30 days as subscribers.  Blizzard goes out of their way to state they don't count them.  AoC is clearly trying to deceive investors because now you can't even compare AoC's 415k to WOW's 10.9million.. because AOC is including accounts for people who didn't actually pay a monthly fee yet.

    Hmm ok.

I dont see the issue here for Funcom?

Lets just say that 415000 # is solid and that is the amount of active accounts playing AoC.At 14.95 a month this is a total of just over 6 million usd a month.

I would LOVE to be called a failure with that much cash rolling in every month.Hell even 50k customers is enough to keep it going. That is just under 800,000usd a month.

Oh well i liked AoC when i was playing it.I had to stop because i went back to work full time.I wish AoC and FC the best and i know the game will get better with time.

    What is your physical limit?

You still playing Dark and Light IKshadow? lol.

Yeah, as stated above, that's not the current subscribers. Thankyou, and have a nice day.

    p.s. Quarter 2 isn't in August.

  • AzrileAzrile Member Posts: 2,582

    " Cash rolling in"?

Have you looked at their financials?  They lost 6million dollars in 3months.  That includes the months when they sold 800k boxs of AOC.

So, you brag about making $10/day even though you pay out $12/day in bills?

Normally you can keep a game going with 50k subscribers.  However, Funcom spent millions of dollars advertising Age of Conan.  Additionally Funcom has 300 employees and FIVE MMORPG projects on the go.  And 90% of that supporting revenue is supposed to come from AoC.   The five projects are:

    1. AoC expansion pack

    2. AoC XBox 360

    3. AO

    4. The Secret World

    5. The Casual Gaming Project

Funcom needs approximately 17 million USD a quarter to break even (this is assuming a substantial reduction in advertising expenses with regards to AoC).  In other words, a lot more than 50k subscribers.

A company can have billions rolling in and be a failure if their costs exceed the amount taken in. Of cours all of this assumes that the 415 is accurate and if the drop off rate continues at its present pace. In its first month wouldnt you expect the retention rate to be higher on such a game that was so hyped?

If I were a amjor investor I would be asking questions and looking for the CURRENT numbers. Not the ones froma month and a half ago.

    Fungerer som det skal

This is a good point, though most businesses expect to lose on the start.  When selling to investors, they're interested in long term growth.  Time will be the true test for returns.  As I recall it, there weren't people busting down the doors when Everquest first game out, but it became a smash hit by their 3rd expansion.

I think most people are just going by what they know. and up untill aoc the average mmo seemed to get by quite happily on 100k. just a month ago players were saying aoc wouldnt keep 200k subs and that then it wouls start to struggle. but now a new figure has come up they have to find a way of making it out to be bad for FC. that's what these forums are for isn't it lol? lets face it 90% of us dont have a clue what it takes to run one.

Also a good point.  Especially on a new release, there isn't going to be a great amount of weight put onto it unless it shows a heavy loss.  Also, companies have a way of showing profitability in the same way a used car salesman can show their 1980 stationwagon with 286,000 miles on it is the sports car of the future.  Most investors know this too and are looking at the trend rather than the snapshot.

I've got to say, with some of the responses on this thread, I wish I could round a few of these folks into a boardroom and start a company.  We'd pwn other consulting groups.

Dont forget AO is free to play but still makes cash as well.Same with AO at launch a year later it won game of the year.

What will be interesting to watch is all the players who whine and complain coming back when the features that were supposed to be in the game are implemented.

Like most any investment the here and now is for the quick and fast money the longterm is where i tend to look. They launched the game AHEAD of war to get  the cash to reinvest later to produce greater returns.Lets face it with WAR launching soon FC had to launch or face low subs in competition with WAR.FC knows the mmo gamer LOVES a brand new shiny game and took advantage of it.That is just they way it is.

As for me SPORE comes out SEPT 7TH.That is my next game as im tired PTP gaming.

    What is your physical limit?

So what reports are valid ?

You mean when Blizzard say 10m subscribers and counting the chinese cyber cafe's that pay 0.75$ / month is valid ?

Thats the only "official" numbers we have, so they count as much as any other MMO  subs numbers.

this report is valid ! now show me where this report says " 415.0000 Customers per 14 august "

what has wow go to do with it, if your loosing a battle dont drag other companies down to try prove a point it just shows your loosing badly.

  • AzrileAzrile Member Posts: 2,582

Blizzard has no way to report how much each chinesse player is playing.  But lets get the facts straight.   Blizzard DOES NOT count accounts that are free (first month).. Funcom did.      Also, Blizzard has almost 6 million subscribers in north American and Europe.    The third final fact is your 75cent  asia comment.  You do realize that in Asia, they pay per hour.   Consider the fact that chinesse servers all have the same end game progress as north america and Europe.  It shows that even though the chinesse have a different billing method, they do have the same play habits, which means similar revenue.  I know personally I'd be giving Blizzard more of my money if they charged me per hour.

And the final proof is just in the numbers.  AoC lost 7 million dollars..  Blizzard made about 150million dollars.   AOC box sales are now off the charts, WOW continues to hold top ten sales numbers for BOXES even 4 years after launch.

If Funcom wasn't profitable with all those box sales, they will never be profitable.   If they are losing money, how are they going to develop more games or pay developers to fix AoC.

Just look at their stock price today.  It's at a 3 year low and dropping fast.
