Well, I was waiting all weekend to get to Monday so I can begin downloading it, it's exciting. I guess my biggest dissapointment at the moment is merely that I must wait even longer to try this out. My lady and I havn't played a game together in months, she's going to college in a different location than me so I'm eagerly awaiting something we can do together. She loves the original Warhammer table top game. I really wish they didn't make the OB so far from when they release the client.. it was a let down. I still want to play though. I suppose eight days is plenty of time to check it out.
Theres still the Preview Weekend prior to OB and techniquely Mythic hasnt posted anything yet.Its always possible that they are monitoring forum responses to gauge player reaction to a possible OB date of Aug 7th.

People like to pretend they've solved a magic formula of the universe by drawing a conclusion based on another, unrelated, recently-failed launch.
Had these people kept as in-touch with Mythic as they like to think they do, listening to and reading all the interviews, they would know that the possibility of a 1-Week Beta is not new and not unexpected. Mark Jacobs himself specifically didn't count the possibility out. I didn't expect Open Beta until at least September 1st.
If these people were so on-the-fence that this news makes them cancel their pre-order, then they shouldn't have pre-ordered to begin with.
This is beginning to smell more and more like AoC. That gives players just over a week to test the game. Which means they will only be able to experience the very first part of the game (ie tortage). It also means the NDA probably isn't getting lifted any time soon??
... I guess your .. history with MMOs is limited. Very few if any AAA games at all give you more than 1 week of open beta. All games give you Beta a week or so before launch. The fact you have a problem with this shows your lack of knowledge of MMOs before AoC or atleast before WoW. Kinda Sad but whatever we won't miss babies.
On the contrary, many MMO with open betas are way more than a week long. This isn't a good move by Mythic. I'm curious as to why they would do that.

I did some of the early Beta stuff for AoC and from my first impression is had problems, problems that WAR is not suffering from. Sure WAR does haev some issues but it is far far more polished and ready for release then AoC would be even if it were to release today(that is if AoC were to release to today, with all the patches and "fixes").
I am by no means a WAR fanboy, I never played the tabletop and I have but limited passing experience in the RTS games. I am just someone who enjoys MMOs and have since back in the late 90s when Everquest showed up(and I am sad I never experienced UO).

This is how I feel as well (minus the whole lady thing). I am confused as to why they would open the download on the 18th and then have the start of OB be on the 7th. And remember, they originally stated the download would be on the 15th.
3 weeks between the download and the start time?? All that does is get a lot of interested people excited and then lets them down. I would have rather they been frank about it up front.
And no, I'm not canceling my pre-order. I simply feel let down as I feel that Mythic was misleading.

One week to play the game is going to be alright for me, especially since the character I make will presumably be deleted anyway. I played Warcraft for a bit and Age of Conan and lots of others games without ever being a beta tester. In fact, I've never been a beta tester (darn!). I guess I'm quite used to paying for a game and hoping it's good.
Perhaps they're leaving the open beta until the last minute so they can make the game as nice as possible for everyone. Many people seem to be really angry at the state of Age of Conan and I guess they are wary of new games turning out the same way. They can't all be bad though; I guess most companies would rather have loads of sales and subs coming in, rather than loads of sales and a few subs.
Well, I'm getting it and I'm gonna try it and make up my mind from there. I've got bills to pay and butts to kiss at work so believe me, whether or not this turns out to be a steaming great lump of crap is the least of my worries.

I don't think that is it. I think its more marketing. Probably the EA marketing guys convinced MJ that doing a short OB will be better since it will whet the appetite but not let people play the whole game for "free" and also generate buzz etc.
I just wish MJ had stuck to his guns and released the NDA with a reasonable amount of time to go. I don't care if open beta is short, but I want to hear what the tester have to say.
I understand why they are doing it, but in this case the marketing weasels are a bad thing to listen to. Don't release an MMO using weasel tactics. It sets a bad precedent for later on. They may get short term hype and impulse buys. But in the end that is not worth losing the very good cache you would get if you released the NDA with a month to go in a show of confidence.

Look Open Beta are no longer about testing. They are just a code word for "Preview event". And that is what Mythic is doing. A preview event.

Open beta is there to stress test the servers before launch to make sure the servers can handle the amount of people.
The level cap that is in place also as a test strategy. Narrow down the areas that people can be in will insure that there will be TONS in one place. I have no idea why everyone wants to see what rank they can get to when the servers will be wiped anyway.
