Well, at least the marketing department is doing their job. Only let people who plan to buy the game anyway to try it out.

I for one, will not be paying to do testing for them, and will not be paying for a game I have not had a chance to see more than screenshots of.
These companies need to stop trying to squeeze every penny possible out of the players, but hey - at least it's not as bad as AoC's pay to 'get a chance' of playing the demo.
This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth for a game I'd been hoping would have the confidence in their own product to let players find out if it was good *before* getting tied into paying.
At the very least - they should stop calling these products an open beta, it sullies the name.

What makes you so special that a game developer must let you try the game for free before hoping for your purchase.  Do you also demand a free seat in a cinema for half the movie as a free preview before considering paying for a ticket.  Oh I just forgot, you should be allow to join a free tour for a few days before thinking about paying for a package tour.  Free trial living for a month before buying a house, any one?

Stop the bullshit, stop the delusion of grandeur.  You are just one mr nobody and WAR is not yet so desperate to draft you in no matter what it costs.  There are tons of paying customers willing to shore up the full costs of a CE set, and you believe WAR should drop these loyal and eager customer and let you in first?  Rude wake up call, no, its not going to happen.

If you want to play now, pay.  If you want to wait, do not worry.  Nobody is bullying you to pay.  Fact is, in many places, CE are already sold out.

Last but not least, why must they stop calling it open beta?  Because you mr nobody has a bad taste in your mouth (or actually a bad mouth)?  Oh great, mr nobody, your view is heard, but WAR decides to go ahead.

Geez, must be rough for you in your family. Voice an opinion and get insulted until you learn to just "shut up."

And the reason why it would be good for companies to stop calling it open beta should be rather obvious. A beta is supposed to be used to discover bugs, exploits and content fixes. A week of "testing" will not yield any of that. Or it may reveal those issues but will not give any opportunity to correct them. There are only two advantages to having what WAR and many other recent MMOs have called "open beta": stress testing of the servers and more hype building. Not true testing.

Oh and Hazmal, kind of hard to play the "open beta" right now when it clearly stats it will start on the 7th of Sep. :)

Yes, that IS what a BETA  is for, which is why the game has been being BETA tested for AGES now.  DUH.

OPEN Betas have NEVER been for beta testing.  Do you honestly think developers are going to get anything major worked out in a week?  No.  By the time you get to Open Beta, the game is pretty goshdern close to release quality.  They are simply using the word "beta" to denote that you CAN and are encouraged to report any obscure and leftover bugs that you MIGHT encounter.

OPEN Betas occur AFTER an NDA has been lifted, with the understanding by those "playing" it, that it's NOT in absolute perfect release quality yet.  And I have an idea as to why only people that have pre-ordered games, lately it seems, get IN for "Open" Betas.  Someone who is in NO way commited to a game, has much less vested interest in seeing to it that it is very polished on release.  If you're looking for just an "idea" of whether or not you're going to invest in a game, then you are someone who will better be served by waiting for the free TRIAL.  This also will serve the developers better, as you will have fewer people spouting off about ridiculously TINY bugs that are already being worked on, and professing all over the internet that "the game is an epic fail" and THAT sort of bull crap.

And just F.Y.I.....I was in for the Preview Weekend, which was just a very short 3 day glimpse into what WAR has to offer, and frankly, it was amazingly stable and SO FAR....it appears that it will be everything that was promised, unlike some other unmentionable game.  Now....the long term beta testers have varying opinions on the game.  But, as you can imagine, having to do the REAL testing (including END GAME testing) requires running through the same material over and over and over, sometimes performing one ACTION a hundred times until it is fixed.  Beta testers are not PLAYING the game for FUN.  They are doing the often BORING and monotonous job of trying to break things, and finding already broken things.

I don't understand where people get the idea that beta testing is all fun and games (no pun intended).  Seriously....

Be glad that the beta testers have done THEIR JOB ahead of time and that a pretty stable game is being offered up for your enjoyment WITHOUT feeling obligated to file detailed and constant reports.

First, its of course a lie, a swindle. It is, like so many same named, no open beta. Open would be "open for all", and that is what it isnt. Its an ugly re-definition of a word, just as the governments re-defined "reform" into "everything gets worse than before".

Second, this is apparently for NA & Co. Not a single word from GOA about a EU beta, nor a chance for EU people that we are in chance of an "open" beta. Once more we Europeans can sit outside and press our noses against the window.

Mythic, I am going to try and buy your game, but I really wish you wouldnt have started our relationship with a grudge.

I started my MMO career with SOE's SWG, followed by EQ2, and there I was used to open MMOs, where I could chose myself to play on US or EU servers as I wanted. It was quite a shock for me to learn this was an exception, and the fact that companies "outsource" EU support to outside companies usually makes the quality WORSE not better. GOA is a trash company, and in AoC we always had to look at the US forums to get any news, because the mods in EU were totally clueless about what was going on. When all humans are equal, some are still apparently more equal than others. I dont like to be locked out or be second best as if my money was worth less It just leaves a taste of ash on my mouth.

Open beta is a open test for all, with certain conditions, it is not a free demo. It may not be truly open but most things in life have conditions.

Your MMO 'career' started as recent as SWG  -  if it was a real job you would be a mere apprentice )  but you are quite correct about the annoyance of being forced into eg Euro and US servers for a variety of reasons.

Damn.. people do alot of bla bla bla... Hell I'm gonna be there (pre-order CE and all.. fan of the RPG + table top, etc...).

We all know about this date - MMORPG.com covers it...- it's there, prepare for WAR, hush hush lill' noob.. just get ready for some rock'n roll...  Doesn't matter the rant.. who gives a f****?

    Cheers & Beers!

    Rot In Chaos....

edit: just and add-> looks pretty typical, I mean no free way ride to play the game... hence -> rant...

answer-> get a job or sell your body to the night:

What I meant about typical is that since you didn't get a "free ride ticket" you complain - well punk, the thing was that it was there to get it (pre-order or SE) you didn't in time?... Well too bad - hang on to yourself... Play ZX Spectrum that should be fun....

Okay...as a closed beta tester perhaps I should clue you in on something here.........the "open beta" is NOT where all the major testing happens..sorry to burst your bubble...thats already been done..and reported.

There are more than enough closed beta testers that worked or are working on this project.......it is pretty much finished.   Any tweaking to be done MORE THAN LIKELY is already either done or work in progress.

A massive horde of free loaders wanting in...to "playtest"....in other words see if they want to buy  the game...oh and also sit in OOC to scroll chat with trolling remarks.(seen this every open beta so far).......will not "improve" the game at this point :P

If you are really wanting to see, perhaps a minimal fee for a pre-order...OR wait til there are free trials to Warhammer.....no risk for you.

I think Mythic has done everything right with this beta........they set goals and hit the milestones ...I think they have done a good job,  as opposed to other closed betas where it was pretty willy nilly..and god knows if people actually tested like they were supposed to.
