In EQlive you had the opportunity to learn the languages of your enemy. You still can, however a few things have changed. Chris briefly explained a few of the differences to me. You no longer have to go to a trainer and chain click on 'Orcish' 100 times. Instead, you learn languages by doing quests and by crafting. Furthermore, there is actually a reason to have these languages now. When fighting in groups often you will be up against AI groups, meaning a PC (player character) group against an NPC (Non-Player Character) group. Let’s say your cleric is overhealing like I do. The Orcs will all yell "GET THE HEALER" in voice over ... they will usually then continue to kill the healer. If you understand the orcish languages you will hear "Get the healer" in English, if you do not understand it you will hear "GRARBEN SNOBINDEDOBIN GAGURBEN". Some other reasons you want to understand certain languages is because as Chris Cao explained it kind of works like a faction. If you’re near a dragon that gives a quest and you go near him ... he might start giving you a quest ... or kill you. If you don’t understand the language then he will just eat you. This makes the game feel alot like Velious in the sense that you can work hard to get your language up to do a quest for a dragon.

Emotes that would cause your character to speak would be cool.  Like hailing someone or growling at someone.  It would really make the RP'ing more enjoyable I think.  They wouldn't need to do anything too spectacular but just a few small things to have fun with.  COH emotes were really fun to mess around with.

Actually, here's a snippet from the interview over at computer and video games:

How about other advances such as voice comms?

Sites: We're going to be allowing voice comms although we haven't fully integrated it yet. The only problem we see with it is obviously with the players. With real voices you'll interact with a female wood elf and quickly realise it's a forty-five year old guy. It's kind of immersion breaking.

So it does look like they are going to implement voice for players to some extent.

This was found on part 3 of the interview mention here here on MMRORPG.com.

Yep.. I read that too.. and like they say it would be kind of immersion breaking BUT I wanna now if that hot looking elf is actually some 50 years old guy... mm besides in CS it is not that bad.. as long as they add some ignore commands or more specifically a list of allowed people to talk to you.. I can imagine being in the center of a town full of vendors....image

Wow, that would be a mood breaker, walking about to a Wood Elf in their overly skimpy clothing and hearing a Middle-age man talking back... Personally I don't think the actual players need to be able to talk, typing is just ok with me. I see in FPS where the combat is so fast that you have to talk to each other, but with most MMORPGs its fine. I'm just glad that the NPCs are going to be able to talk, also the ability to learn the different languages sounds pretty cool.

Yea, I agree with the immersion breaking.. I'm sure I am not alone when I say that sometimes when I get immersed in these games over the course of a week or so, that sometimes they enter my dreams when I sleep at night.  Nothing like having some female elf talking like a dude to change that dream into a nightmare.

Or wait, maybe it is just me?

I think if this is included, they definitely need to make it an option on the client side if you want to hear that stuff.

i wonder if perhaps there could be some kind of voice conversion prog created to alter your voice?image

Does anyone know if there will be player character voices ...such as in Never winter nights ..where if you played a female halfling , the voice would be similar ....allowing the immersion aspect and also adding to it ?

I really don't see where integrating voice comms into the game is necessary.  My onling gaming group generally travels around and plays the same game.  We have a TeamSpeak server set up and use that for voice comms.

I don't see the desirability of having voice comms with everyone on the server.  If they implement it, we'll probably just leave it disabled and still use TS :)

Well, TS requires a TS Server to host the conversations.  There's alot of people who don't have a spare server lying around or want to have to pay for a private TS Server so this gives them the option to have the same functionality as those who use TS without the third party complications.

I dont think voice comms will be used much even if it was a in-game feature.

    Speach disfigured people
    Stuttering people
    Mute/deaf people
    Shy people
    Slang people
    Heavy breathing people
    Screaming people
    Background noise
2 or 3+ people all talking at the exact second in a boss type encounter

Thanx, but no thanx. You turn on your voice comm's if you like image

if they did implement voice emotes, i would hope they would put a spam stopper on them. i think a 30second delay between each would be fine....can u imagine the voice spam if there wasnt a timer on them? that would be god awful.

Given Ken'Shieros amazing contribution to the thread, I would guess that the game will beam itself directly into your brain. Thus making your weak meatpuppet methods of communication archaic, and unneccesary.
