This is just my opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone. I respect everyones views of this game, but I can't help but call "train-wreck" on this one. Here are the top 10 reasons why.
1) A not designed with ST fans in mind.
2) Going the way of the Console.
3) Cryptics engine sucks bad.
4) Some fan favorite races are being left behind.
5) Low Bargan Basement Budget.
6) Bad Community, MOST of which are kids.
7) Single server Rule Sets
8) Simple simon UI
9) No respect for Cannon
10) Over-zealous fan-boi wanna-bes that have the devs ears.

ok
It seems the industry once again refuses to listen to the players.
I like to hear more...please continue.
You could be right, but lets wait and hold off on any judgements until more info comes out though.
Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD
It is way to early to tell how the game will turn out as of now. The developer does seem to be very enthusastic about the game from what I have read. They have also been able to put out a trailer showing game play after a very short amount of time in developement. The video did not look very good however, but with over a year of development it could turn out well.
A few complaints from the OP that i will mention though however are that a game can be made for console and pc and still be enjoyable. "Cryptics engine sucks bad," gota love the level of education used in writing that, but what part of the engis is poor. Game engines can be modifed greatly and made to show a variety of art styles. As for community, from what I have seen on the official forums everyone is respectful and vary adult. The developers are going to have a hard time with the game to get all the races in there, and the fans are very demanding. This has got to be one of the hardest properties to work with so I think we can cut them some slack on that front.
Lets all just wait and see how it turns out before we pass judgement on a game that has only been in developemt a few months.
I do not know. I do not think we can expect mmo's to always start out as big as older mmo's which have been built up and expanded several times. They have alot of area to expand and keep adding to a game of this nature. I will look at it on release and make a call then at this point.
Well, at first I thought you were joking...
No respect for canon? Not designed for ST fans? Where do you get this from? Everyone on the dev team is a fan of Star trek, and even those who aren't already are being made to watch an entire series or read the novels to get absorbed into it. They ARE making this game primarily for trekkies, but obviously trying to appeal to mass sci-fi/mmo market too - that doesn't mean the game will be just another MMO with a star trek skin.
Of course you're entitled to your opinions but I'm not sure where you're getting these from.. low budget? Mostly kid community? Fan races left behind? I'd say it's the opposite..
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
Posting in colors does not make you sound intelligent. I'd say Star, Trekked you out!
After perusing the forums a bit, I don't really see 1) or 6) anywhere. (That I know of, all the 'kids' are SW fans. Trekkies are almost all adults and their kids. I don't think 'WoW-kiddies' can't grasp the concept of the idealistic universe portrayed by Roddenberry.) Yeah, 10) is very present, but isn't that actually good for an IP such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc? But, now that I have stated that, isn't that actually contradicting 1)?
Certain things affecting gameplay are actually good, such as a single server ruleset. It allows everyone to interact at some level if they want, and can be pulled off successfully. (Look at EVE Online: 200k+ players in a single server environment.) These all effect how players will play the game. A simple UI is almost a must, as long as it isn't too simplistic, and especially if they plan on making the game playable from a console gamepad.
Budget? What budget? Cryptic has picked up a half-developed game, and going with what they have. I guess they COULD redevelop the entire thing, and take another two years doing it. With a low budget comes less than high-end graphics (not a bad thing unless you're '1337 grafix' fan-boi yourself). A few cuts have to be made in what races are used, too. Nothing says they won't get added in later.
Is the game going to be a 'train-wreck'? No. Will it be as big as SWG or LOTRO? No. I think that Cryptic is going to get a solid fanbase of Star Trek fans from all levels (casual to Trekkie). I don't think they're trying to break new ground here, just provide something for the fans and make a little money while they're at it. Will I be playing? Maybe. If I have to pay a substantial amount of money every month, I'll probably stick to EVE for my spaceship pew-pew. If it's on a micro-trans/f2p model, I'll probably pop in every once in a while to live out my Cpt. Kirk fantasies of childhood.
Wow, I had no idea. Another one bites the dust I suppose. I guess WAR online will have to keep me going until KOTOR online comes out. Too Bad for the Trekies.
Let me get this straight......Your saying it's pretty much done?
Spock has nerved pinch this one.
I don't think so. Jack Emmert seems like a Star Trek fan. It seems like he's especially fond of DS9 and the first six movies, which I think is good because I am too.
That's no indication of anything at all. I enjoyed FFXI and it was a console release first.
There is no way you can actually know this. No games have yet been released with Cryptic's engine. Champions Online will be released in the spring so we'll know then. But you do realize that Cryptic has experience making games, so there's a good chance their engine will be good.
Are you sure about that? So far this game will have the major Federation races, the Borg and the Klingons. That's a lot of fan favourite races right there. Jack Emmert also said that they will be including other races in expansions and one example he gave was the Dominion (actually at least 4 races, but who's counting?) If they are including the Dominion, you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll be including the Romulans, the Cardassians, and any other race you can think of.
Again, how do you know? You forget that Cryptic probably has full coffers. They've been running City of Heroes/Villains for years and they even made a bunch of cash selling the City franchise to NCSoft. I don't see them hurting for money at all. They even hired a bunch of the people who worked on STO for Perpetual.
If this was Perpetual's STO and we were talking about ST-O.net then I would agree 100%. As it is, I've posted on the forums over at STO.com and I found the community to be very polite, intelligent, and positive. There are a few kids, but you'll see that in every online community.
So? It can be done. EVE Online has done it, and I think STO can pull it off too. For example, I imagine that it will be much more dangerous to enter the Klingon Neutral Zone than it will be to be in the orbit of Vulcan.
Again, no one has even seen the UI, so how can you possibly know? Anyway, the goal is for a simple UI because that will make the game easier to play.
I agree, you need to show respect toward large, metal, barrel-shaped powder weapons. Oh, you mean "canon." How do you know? They set it 30 years in the future for a reason: so they can do what they want with the universe. So far we know nothing of the story, so there's no indication on whether they are following canon at all.
Again, I'd agree with you if you were talking about ST-O.net and Perpetual, but you are not. You don't seem to know Jack (Emmert). He'll do what he wants with the game and the fans be damned. No amount of whining by the community will change his mind. How do I know? Because this is how it went down in City of Heroes.
So far, all your objections are jumping to conclusions, making judgements without a shred of evidence, and typical bitching and whining. Try harder please.
Khaaaaaan!!!!!
That. Was. Epic.
Hehe, where do you people come up with these lists? Do you have ready made templates and just pop em in here and there?
"Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures."
3) Cryptics engine sucks bad.
How can you make that call on an engine none of us have even seen yet? It's a different engine from City of Heroes/Villains.
4) Some fan favorite races are being left behind.
You're just making stuff up. It has been stated repeatedly, and often by Cryptic, that each player will be able to create their own races if they want to. It's not hard to figure out that even if they don't have a race you want to be at character creation, you can create it yourself anyway, no matter how obscure it is. You're obviously not really paying attention to the game's development and probably just judging it by screenshots or City of Heroes/Villains.
5) Low Bargan Basement Budget.
Where'd you get this from? Cryptic sold City of Heroes/Villains to NC Soft for a healthy enough sum of money to develop this game.
6) Bad Community, MOST of which are kids.
The game hasn't even been released yet - how do you know what the community will be like? I would imagine the community would mainly be made up of Trekkies - most of whom are not kids.
7) Single server Rule Sets
Cryptic has gone on record as saying that they haven't even made up their own minds about whether or not they want a single server or multiple servers. You're just making stuff up and destroying your credibility.
8) Simple simon UI
Cryptic hasn't even shown us what Star Trek Online's UI will be like. Stop making stuff up.
Well if it sucks then you don't have to play it...
Unless the guys from A Clock Work Orange have tagged your eyes open and forcing you to play it.
The way I had always invisioned a Star Trek MMO (before Perpetual started work). Is that a player would start in the Academy, listen to instructors, sort of like a quick tutorial that taught all the controls etc, and then after basic training, you could then branch off into a specilization, and learn more on that, and if you liked it continue with the class and learn more. It would be a fairly quick process because nowone liks to sit and listen, but it would have been more genuine.
And then from there on, sort of like an EvE style game, with more focus inside the ship, then outside of it in terms of camera.
Sort of like Star Trek: Bridge Commander, a game I played after playing Elite Force, except different people can play the roles instead of NPCs and more of a sandboxy feel.
