I'm a newbie here - I ask for your patience and forgiveness if these questions haven't already been answered. I haven't read anywhere about how they are dealing with the lag that will obviously occur due to the huge amount of players on a single server and how detailed the character creation system is (I particulary would like to hear from beta testers). Would you say its more like CoH, or L2?

All beta testers are sworn to secrecy. So we don't know much about the character creation system except that it will be somewhere between CoH and L2 .
Dark and Light has one big server cluster composed of many individual computers coordinated with a dynamic loading system based upon licensed technology from BigWorld Technology (it only became available mid 2003). This means that all the computers in the cluster will seek to even out the CPU load. So if a big fight occurs at location x the territory covered by that computer will shrink and the other computers will shift their territories accordingly.
So if it works lag from the server side should not be a problem.

It works well enough for Eve, though I don't know if they use the same technology. I believe the current high was between 8 and 9k simultaneous users in Eve, though I could be off as I don't pay that much attention to it.

They have said the server can hold unlimited players with little to no lag at all server side.
They also have a NPC scripting system that lets you go into NPC mode if you lag-out or lag badly.

It'd be interesting to see what would happen if they could actually get 50k online in one go.
Though, I image it would make most peoples graphics cards beg for mercy, so most people would just scream about lag no matter what. Whether it be their craptacular comp choking on too much info, bad internet connection to the server, or the server itself chocking.

Thanks guys! I agree though, it would be interesting to see if it actually works the way they think it will. I guess there is only one way to find out...
...bribing beta testers.

The server can and will hold an unlimited ammount of players with little if not any lag server side. Now if your forgetting something, lag caused by having too many players on the screen may happen during wars and such, but remember this world is also 40,000km^2 there's enough room to go around.
Stop worrying about technical stuff, it's gonna be good.

As for the war-lagg, the devs have thought of this, so that you can create custom action-patterns that your char will take in case of lagg. You know how annoying it is when you're running from a tough monster and it starts to lagg, and when the lagg stops/siminishes you're dead? That won't be the case here! You can choose that the system will make your character fight any enemy, perhaps run from strong ones or when your health drops too low, make them cast certain spells in different situations etcetera, so that even if you get any lagg (it will probably mostly be because of your connection though) the game will handle it for you.
Oh, what a wonderful world... ...LET'S DESTROY IT!
