For the average gamer, quadcores don't have much use. Most (if not all) games are optimized for dual core processors and don't make use of the extra 2 cores a quadcore would have.
To an extent I disagree, it comes down to this. Currently not much uses Quad cores, but they will. Day to day gaming you wont notice a huge difference between quad and dual, but the quad will be better in the future.
Then you need to take into consideration when quad cores are being better utilized how much cheaper will they be?
Basically if you have nothing better to do with the money and want complete top of the line get the quad, but i doubt that is the case so i recommend with some reservations the dual.
atm its better to have a high performence Dualcore than a quadcore of the same price.
The most recent games have only started dualcore optimisation (and many are still single core and only have some dualcore properties to make the box sell better)
Also, the quadcores still havent hit the point where the prices drop as boms like with the dualcores, they will probably do so withinin a year though.
Also, even if there will be games coming out in the near future for quadcores (maybe 2-3 years, and in experimental stage probalby much sooner) the main core of the games will remain single.-dualcore, simply because the more cores there are, the harder it is to program and the longer it takes to make the game.
(and because we have only barely begon exploring the possibilities of dualcore, and there are currently only three games that push high-end single-core processors to the limit)
So anyways, in my opinion you'll get better performence-per-buck with a dualcore thatn with a quadcore.
(p.s. dont forget there is a big difference between a game with multicore option and/or support or optimisation: optimisation is much better!)
