I know its been talked about here before but if the date doesn't change we are 2 weeks from the first experiments taking place.
So yeah while cracked.com might not be a great place for facts they list a lot of outside sources for the LHC project. In theretop 5 experiments most likely to doom the world the LHC can cause 3 of them. I can't see how what we can get can out weigh what will happen if it goes wrong. If it goes wrong its basicly the end of the world. It it does work can someone here explain just what we will be learning from this?
Yeah I know miss spelling in the poll.

How the hell did you get to be an elite member man, was it like a make a wish foundation type thing that was granted to you or what????
What the hell does that have to do with anything?

Lol! this thread iz teh funnyz
but seriously when I heard about the LHC and the things they expirment with I instantly thought of what could go wrong with that, I agree it sounds like something I would prefer to be shutdown, or taken to another planet or something.
To be honest, I honestly do not know what the hell the LHC will do for us other than making a big ass atom. I guess we can study an atom more in detail to create stronger forms of energy and nano technology.
But Im a little weary of it. We're playing God with this one. The creation of a nuclear bomb is like a like shit turd in a toilet compared to the LHC. The LHC is the four story brick house on fire with the toilet on the second floor that has the little shit turd in it.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
What really gets me is that so many people won't let us build nuclear reactors which could help out big time and if something went wrong would just affect a small area compared to the LHC which would take out the whole dam planet.

The first thing that came to my mind was
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
If the LHC screws up, say goodbye to our solar system and possibly the whole galaxy.
The LHC accelerates particles to close to the speed of light
At the speed of light, the particles mass is infinite and time stops.
We are basically recreating the big bang on earth
Which, in laymens terms, we are going to blow our F*CKING world into space sand and the aliens who have been monitoring, probing, and kidnapping us are going to say
"what a bunch of dumbasses"

Arndur is elite because his post are accurate and informative. And he is a general all around nice guy.
getting on topic
So, Basically It's Like... The HLC in action
Imagine you have a huge tanker truck parked outside a children's hospital. You don't know what's inside it, but you're fairly confident that it's either a cure for cancer, or 20,000 gallons of explosive nitroglycerin. To find out which, you have to shoot at it with an AK-47.
well if it goes right we will learn how to split even more atoms...if it doesn't....It won't even matter after the fact

Enthusiasts have called the scale of the project unprecedented and even "biblical."
“In a way it's biblical,” says Limon. “I'd like to think that this curiosity, this need to know is … if you're not a religious person … the soul of human beings, the thing that makes us different from dogs and cats. Even though dogs and cats are wonderful
Don't worry the scientist have assured us nothing bad will happen, or rather only a small chance of something bad happens.
This term alone scares the SHIT out of me lol:
European Center of Nuclear Research

I want one for X-MAS. I need the time travel so I hope it goes well. My mother ship left me here thousands of years ago and I need to go back in time to get out of here.
Who let you in the VIP section?
As if American Center of Nuclear Research is any better.

Damn, not arguing with you there either...American Center of Nuclear Research would be scarey lol. But "European" and "Nuclear" just scares the shit out of me more for some reason.

The American Center of Nuclear Research is apart of the US Army Research and Development Division. Since the '70s they have been working on a system to intercept ICBMs and make nukes useless if attempted to be used.
This research is on the level of the creation of existance which I doubt running an atom at the speed of light will cause since as we all know creation was made when god said so.
I think keeping the LHC online is a good thing. Consider mankind and its evolution and all the steps we took to get where we are. If all we focus on is the negative aspects of all the decisions we make then we will never advance as a species toward better things and will be stuck living in this time with the limited technology we have today.
Think of the Wright brothers when they decided that they wanted to fly like birds. I bet there were people telling them that no good can come of this and that people will die when their "infernal contraption" lifts them hundreds of feet into the air. Or how about Tesla and Edison? When they were tinkering with electricity and made their findings public I bet you there were people yelling and screaming, talking about death rays new ways to kill mankind.
If it truly is a small chance of things going wrong then I say get on it. Without risk there is no reward. Someone is going to do this kind of research sooner or later and I for one would like to see some major life enhancing discoveries in my lifetime that would perhaps affect me personally.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
We are testing Darwin's theory that only the most intelligent species survive.
Risk takers often fail, so do morons. Now we get to find out which our species really is.......
Well said, what the naysayers do is just the fear of the unknown. Damnant quod non intellegunt, they condemn what they do not understand. The larger the scale, the louder the cries.
They should have said it will bring free internet and holographic porn to everyone, I bet the population would be teeming with expectance.

I agree with this sentiment.

I'ts exciting to think how such a catastrophe could happen. But reality is more boring, the risk is zero.
it's been stated many many many times thats anything world ending simply couldn't happen whatever you've read on the intarwebs is most likely not true ( don't ever take what you read at face value). Alot of scaremongering has occured recently by uninformed individuals blogging about something they don't have a clue about.
It is somewhat amazing that people believe this about the LHC.
No, it can not destroy the earth, it can not even destroy the surroundings were it is built.
Yes, a lot of power is built in to the particles that collide, but not THAT much.
There is a very well established law of physics called "the principle of conservation of energy".
Wich essentially means you can not get energy out of nothing.
This means that whatever explosion that can happen can not contain more energy then what was used to accelerate the particles.
Even the unlikely "black hole" scenario, wich is indeed possible is harmless.
Because the size of the so called singularity would be so small that it would evaporate within nanoseconds, this according to the Hawking law.
Just to be even more clear, particles hit the earth with a LOT more energy in them then what the LHC can even dream of achieving.
The so called "oh my god" particle, for wich they have built one of he largest detectors in the world in Malarque in Argentina contains about 100 MILLION times the energy that the LHC can stuff inte a particle.
That energy is the equivalent of a tennis serve going 150 km/h, contained in ONE proton.
Now this is a rare particle, but thousands upon thousands hit the earth each year.
I have been planning to visit the LHC for the startup, and if work permits I am going to, now if they can only hold the schedule..
I am fairly well read on this stuff, I dedicate a good deal of my spare time to the subjects they are researching at the LHC.
Now I am no scientist, but I am going to "risk" my life going there if I am able, the scientists working there, who are indeed scientists and well aware of what can and can not go wrong is going to be there.
Hope this eased some peoples mind..
