the only things i did'nt like about the video were how the buildings just disapeared when destroyed, the ships turning really fast and unatural & those hovering tanks that shoot lazer beems lol
Noticed that with the cannons in the coast line fight. Cannons would "pop" in when created then "pop" out when destroyed. Nothing really showed any kind of damage when hit, stuff would just sink into the sea or disappear all together.

is it really real or was that video a mirage? Very cinematic video. I wish they'd demonstrated the game ui and mechanics through the players eyes. The cinematic video was nice and all, but not a great representation of how the game will actually look and feel through the players point of view outside of screenshot wallpaper eye candy. The game really emphasizes the massively multiplayer part of MMO's it kinda showcases what's lacking in a lot of MMO game's as a result of excessive instancing and zoning. I haven't really seen as massive a player driven MMO since DAOC and UO glory days. Great video we just need to see a non cinimatic game play video next time.
Wow, what a waste of 20 minutes. I just watched the HD trailer (which took almost 2 hours to download ><); people really must be beyond desperate for this game if they are blown away this easily.
First, the animation was incredibly poor, which I admit I was surprised about because their older trailers gave the impression that animation was one of the stronger features.
Running for instance looks very sluggish, the swings of the weapons, general spell effects, buildings being destroyed, ships being sunk etc were so bad (looked sluggish, generic, or for instance with the buildings they just disappear lol) it really lowers the quality of this game immensely.
This is something that could be fixed in their beta though, but they still want to insist of a short beta, and to be honest they have had 8 years already, so I would not hold my breath.
I don’t really care about the graphics gameplay is more important, but that said they look like something from 1999 not 2008. This is not exactly going to sell someone on their game in 2008.
The combat is meant to be their main feature; it looks good in some areas like for instance spells bar the effects, and archery. But the melee combat really looks tedious, like its just spam click the attack button until someone dies, definably looked like this in the large scale, very staged, fights.
The mounted combat looks incredibly dull, there seems to only be one or 2 attacks for the mounted character, and 1 attack for the mount. The general effectiveness of mounted combat seems useless as well, somehow I doubt that staged fight portrayal of mounts charging in from the side being realistic with actual players.
I would not usually be this harsh on a game, but these guys have been hyping this vapourware for years as the saviour for sandbox gamers, well the game looks underwhelming, and really does not justify the long wait for it to come out.
This game looks like it is just a failure waiting to happen, if they were not so insistent on having a short beta I might bother to type that it has potential, but somehow I don’t see them improving all of the listed problems and releasing within 2008.
Edit: Ill still keep an eye on this game, I have been since 2001, hell I even bothered to sign up for the beta (who wouldnt out of curiosity alone ;p) but I wont hold my breath on a large improvement in quality.

For someone not caring about graphics, you sure use alot of words about it.
I for one though the mounted combat looked cool. It was fast and the mounts was fighting along with it's master. Lots of people falling of mounts as they died and at least one time I saw a mount fighting alone (around 2:30). Is there ANY MMO that has this kind of mounte combat ?

I just watched the entire film. Was 100% action and it looks good.
Graphics-
I'm impressed- its all 100% dynamic lighting. Now, I know some of the latest MMOs like Age of Conan and such might look a little sharper but those games can't handle a lot of guys onscreen. DFO is aimed at huge battles so like WAR, I'd expect for them to be more reasonable rather then too flashy (like AoC)
Combat-
Looks incredible. Nothing less then I expected. I even saw a lot more combat then I expected
Boats anyone? Player run cities anyone? This is the dream, true player run PvP. Hovercraft? sweet
Compare this film to say Champions Online footage. It looks fun not knocking it. But notice how they carte not for PvP and omit pvp footage. DFO has 100% pvp footage so I know the pvp works.
I thought the combat looked much more exciting then WAR's combat. It's up there with Spellborn's combat videos I would say.
Love the aggressive look for all the races. This ain't Hello Kitty Online like we always knew it wouldn't be
Very excited to see a pvp focused title. Looks like EVE Online will finally have some company

Everquest didn't make floating islands. learn to lore(RL).
All in all it looks better than expected but I'll be waiting a few months for the most deluded parts of the fan base to disappear or get absorbed. It has always annoyed me how darkfall is attempting to cater towards people who clearly do not want a world especially the one their waiting for. They're just opening themselves up for complaints that would have never tried to stretch their game mechanics list to include them.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I can't say I was impressed. Even if the fight scenes were actual game play they were obviously choreographed. I didn't care for way the characters moved, they seemed robotic. The graphics as a whole seem to be sub par to what should be coming out as we head to the latter half of 2008.
So after years of waiting they show a crapalistic video? Combat combat n more combat? N what 5 seconds of a dwarf hammering on a sword to show crafting? I would think for 20 mins of video they woulda shown a bit more of the game features. From what could tell...this coulda easily been a preview for some Saturday morning show for the kiddies.
Showed nothing really of gameplay or mechanics. Killing...didn't show one person looting their kill. Showed a city going down...but barely showed a city going up. Didn't show shit about crafting, resource collecting or any other tooted features. Hardly showed the interface, no heath bars or such...or is the game so sandbox you don't get to see when your heath is low...you just die?
Graphics were sub-par, with ugly animations. Not calling the game vapourware...could very well be the game. But from that empty worlded video, sure doesn't encourage anything new comming from this game.
I gotta be honest: I'm pretty blown away that they actually came out with a 17 minute gameplay video. That being said, I'm blown away by the fact that the video actually somehow managed to work its way out of the Aventurine "PR" labyrinth, not at the video itself.
Things I liked:
Combat. Hand-to-hand, mounted, and siege combat all look like they have the potential to be very fun. There was a lot of interesting stuff going on, and I love some of the cool features (shooting people off cliffs, the sniper in the tree etc.)
Okay honestly that's about it.
Things I didn't like (but don't necessarily cause problems):
Graphics. Graphics aren't that big of a deal to me (I played WoW for 2.5 years) but these really did look a few years behind. I'd like to see the game on higher settings. Needless to say, graphics alone will not deter me from playing Darkfall if it actually comes out and has all the features Aventurine has claimed it will.
Animations. Animations are more of a problem than graphics in my opinion. They're choppy, slow, and poorly done in general. Once again, this won't stop me from playing the real Darkfall, but I'm pretty disappointed.
Destruction of large objects. Yay sieges and boat warfare look great, but whats the deal with the boat/city wall disappearing in thin air (or water) and leaving the players to drop to the ground? When I saw boats sinking I was SO excited, then they just... disappeared. Very uncool.
The world is so... empty. Hopefully if Darkfall is a true sandbox, the players themselves will flesh out the world, but that remains to be seen.
Actual Problems with the Video
Almost no UI is shown, and the little UI that is shown could easily have been edited in. I hate saying it, but its true. In order to truly believe in this game, I'm going to need to see it from a player's point of view.
The crafting section is like 10 seconds long, and once again, could easily have been edited to make the crafting window magically appear. There needs to be more on crafting in a sandbox game, which leads me to the most important point:
Darkfall is a sandbox game, the game shown in this video is NOT. The game shown in this video is a linear model with beefed up combat. That's not what Darkfall is about. Where are the trade caravans crossing the barren desert? Where are the crafting guilds being hired out to make arms for an entire army? Where are the explorers travelling into unknown territory? Where is the player run economy? This video was 95% combat, but Darkfall is not. A true sandbox game is about so much more than shooting your opponent off a cliff with a spell (however cool it may be).
----
So that's basically it. I'll admit that I've been at fault, said that Darkfall would never come out etc., and it looks like I was wrong. However, unless Aventurine pulls through in the beta (meaning actually has one) and has a true sandbox game in their possession... well, we'll see.
And the true score:
Darkfall Believers: 1
Darkfall Naysayers: 8 (1 for every year DFO's been in production)
Everquest didn't make floating islands. learn to lore(RL).

OMG the first MMO to add floating islands if anybody else does it is an unoriginal copy.
You seriously missed the point of the post, Everquest did not create islands and they sure as hell aren't the first video game to have them. They just took stories from real live that are intimate to our culture just like any other game does. You don't even need to play video games or read old stories to come up with floating islands just spend enough time in mountains or junk like that.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Which is exactly why I'm not going to be in beta and probably wait for a few months after relase to get in. The darkfall devs have either made a really screwed up game or a game with a community that isn't suited for the game.

Slow down there slim
I was comparing the floating disks/castles to EQ2: KOS, nothing more. Yes, they borrowed from other games, there is nothing wrong with that, I was just having a little fun. But please don't insult me or other with this idea that the DF crew suddenly got the idea from RL lore or some other nonsensical notion like that. Game devs borrow ideas from each others games. The interesting part will see if the DF crew improved on it or not.
"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"
The beta sign-up is just another lie in a long list of them from Tasos. I looked at their so called video. If that is the game they are showing, I was not impressed at all. I thought this was supposed to be a great game?
Like I said before, they will be lucky to get this game out in 2009 if then. Anyone still saying 2008 is still in la la land.
I watched the video and i have to say i was dissapointed. All i saw was constant PvP battles with very scripted looking bots and a VERY brief view of the crafting end of things. The graphicss are chunky, the textures were ok tho but not brilliant. Also the way everything moves is very wooden like and stiff.
It would have been nice if the video concentrated more on the other aspects of Darkfall instead of mainly on PvP. Things like city building, crafting, Charecter progression ETC. Adventurine has promissed many different nice sounding features but i have yet to actually SEE them demonstrated, this video would have been a great opertunity to show off these features to the whole playerbase, instead we just got an extended demonstration of Darkfalls PvP and a scrap or 2 of a couple of other features.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
Even if a developer takes directly from another the original stories still follow.
If I want a good story I go read a book or watch a movie. I want video games to provide me dynamic entertainment and allow me to write my own book about how I interacted with the community. How we achieved things together. How we stormed enemy cities. How we defended our city.
That is the stories games like EVE Online and hopefully this one too will provide
Lore- that should be what the players themselves write in a sandbox world!

I'd like to get excited and all.. but it'll have to at least have US servers before I consider playing it.
I'm Australian and pings to Europe on ADSL2 is about 400-450. To the US they're in the low 200s.
For an action game like this looks, it'll be important thing to factor in.

Started a writing a fanboi defense post...
Couldn't be arsed...
This game's gonna rock and you know it.
I'm off to watch the video again.
Even if a developer takes directly from another the original stories still follow.
