I already play BF2 & 2142, but this also looks interesting.

is this essentially another war rock?

It's an online FPS with avatar persistence and rank advancement.  With advancement comes (slowly) new equipment.  Other than your beginner equipment, equipment is all rented (for up to 30 days) with points earned in game or purchased with cash. There are a half dozen or so maps with a maximum of 16 avatars in a round.
