They are not redoing the avatars, they have said repeatedly. And it would cost vastly more than the engine rework they are doing now. As they are, I much prefer the AO avatars over, say, WoW avatars - more polygons and more emotes.
Yeeeaahhhh...............
The point of the new engine was to get new players who are turned off by the outdated graphics. Now how many do you think are going to play a game which has been Frankensteined with a newer engine and shadows dragging on their GPUs, but 7+ year old avatars?
If the only thing they do is the engine without upgrading the rest, including avatars, they will have wasted all that time on the same low ppopulation they have now, and will have cut their population even lower since most of the players have shitty computers and will be shut out when the new engine comes out anyway.
Less loyal players remaining due to increased requirements, no new players to replace them due to Frankensteined engine/graphics.
Yep, another successful idea brought to you by the intellectual midgets at Funcom.
If the engine didn't change one bit of the appearance, but simply improved the lag and compatibility issues, it would be a success. That they are adding in a new environment with better water and fauna and shadows is a bonus. The game will get new players because of it, simple enough.

No Venacademy, they won't. People will see the stark contrast between low res avatars and high res everything else and say WTF?!?
And then they will leave the same as they do now.
I'm really starting to wonder if you're AmazingAverys' counterpart. Take off the rose colored glasses, man.

I'll have to agree with Wise on this one. My observation has been that people are almost overly obsessive about how their avatars look and respond, and put less stock in improvements to the overall game world. Sure, you might get a few new players, and some folks come back for a short time, but don't expect them to stay.

You don't have to be obsessed with how your avatars look to be turned off by those in AO. They are pretty grim. Like others, I've been wondering how they will look in a made-over world. Odd, I would think. And even more clunky.
at least the graphics update will improve game performance since its all dx7 now
MMOs currently playing: - About to play: Lord of the Rings Online Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
The engine won't come have some sense people. As for xpack there are so many ideas in game suggestions forums that failcom are too stupid to use... Moon based themes xpack, turning on the old zones that were scrapped at launch, inavading the alien homeworld xpack. The people currently at failcom have no imagination. Lost eden gave mechs with universal stats that die based on who fires first. They could of taken that idea and improved upon it with mech stats armor special perks etc. No they sold a bunch of crap only with a silly global grind research xp system designed to feed them money by making you waste time on busy work and stupid trinkets that take up valuable gear slots to use.
I find the animation to be almost as big a turn off as the graphics. Especially when you stand in one place and move in a circle, spinning around without moving your feet and legs like you were standing on a turntable.

Dude, they have like 3 people working on AO, a community manager, a bug hunter and a developer. Lost Eden was the culmination of that 1 developers 3 years of hard graft during which he lost his wife as she looked elsewhere for a warm bed, and almost came close to losing his landline phone as he was so overworked he forgot to pay his bill on time. This man should be an inspiration to us all, please let me not hear you sully his name again. Thank you.

The Community Manager's name is Tarib aint it? Who just happens to be the same Tarib who works on Age of Conans forums too.
Anyhow, Anarchy Online COULD be resurrected. But would take work.
Maybe it would be easier to use the newer version of the same engine (i.e. the AOC engine) and start from scratch? Either way, Anarchy Online has a LOT going for it. With the exception of the Star Wars franchise, no MMO has managed to couple guns with a "magic" facet and made it work. Given a chance it could actually put a nail in SWG's coffin (if they did it right).

I'm looking forward to the engine Update. I really do like AO and after the Engine Update and a new expesionpack i believe AO will once again become one of the top rated MMORPGs.
AO needs no ressurection, its still on rank 20 of the game list, above WOW and many others...

I'm sure the enormous population of roughly 12k would agree with you.
And do you actually think the game list here is an accurate determining factor in the games' standing in the mmo genre? Hell, you're lucky if even 1 out of 1,000 gamers know AO exist. And even luckier if more than 10% of those people care.
It's above WoW on the list, eh? Yet WoW has 10+million players worldwide and AO struggles to keep sub-20k player levels in just NA and EU.
And it's had how many expansions and booster packs already, and the numbers are still declining? And you think one more will turn it around?
Now this is really interesting, whats your source of information? 12k players?
And even if the whole world was playing WOW, it still is a boring game to me... and they have got a little problem with unofficial "free" servers
It's not hard to figure out the playerbase from the character database and last logins. It's also not hard to actually go ingame and see the desolation.
As far as free servers, check youtube. AO has them, too. But apparently, because you don't like WoW, AO is obviously more successful. Newsflash: I don't like WoW, but I'm not dumb enough to ignore what's in plain view.
Must suck to be so blind to things which are obvious.
Well... I for one is awaiting the new engine passionately...
and I feel quite sure it will come... No guarantess for something like that ofc, but I don't see why it should not unless the company closes down...
There's semi-regular updates on the progress with screenshots and so on, so it seems clerar to me they are working on it..
Developers who have previously worked on AO is also brought back into the team again, so it seems to me FC is more dedicated to AO than they have ever been.
Not to mention that ever since Silirrion took over the game has seen massive bug fixes and updates... Even fixed lotsa stuff previously claimed to be un-fixable...
All in all I think it looks promising and better than ever before in the 3+ years I've played the game...
That said... The game ain't perfect... Far from it... but then again, I have yet to try a game that is
It will benefit greatly from the coming engine overhaul, but I personally don't think the graphics are all that bad as they are...
I prefer it to the cartoon'ish look of WoW for example, for the simple reason that AO is not a fairy tale game, but have a vastly different setting of being a sci-fi game taking place on a hostile planet and all that...
Judging AO on it's graphics is like judging a book on it's cover...
Very, very, very shallow and says absolutly nothing about what it actually contains and have to offer in terms of depth, customisation, near end-less things to do and explore...
Yes, I like the game a lot still... There's lotsa things I dislike and would like to have fixed/changed, but overall the upsides far outweigh the downsides in my opinion...
Else I would not login to it every evening still after 3+ years, with the knowledge that there will be lotsa stuff to do and not knowing what I will end up trying and experiencing that evening...
Is it just me or is there no way to put some text within Quote tags here?

I'm sorry but saying AO avatars look better than wow is just crazy.
Please run WoW on highest settings and tell me AO looks better.
If Failcom updates the avatars I will actually sub instead of just being a froob and playing once every month.
Total Graphic and UI overhaul and this game would have higher subs than AoC(275k Subs).
Add in a teaser for a possible Xpac while keeping the froob accounts and I can see it even closing in on games like FFXI and EQ2 (400-500k subs).
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing

Has there been any news updateson the engine upgrade lately?
As far as I know, there is no date set yet.
The new Game director said they are working on it and they also brought back an old developer (Enno Rehling) to help move the project along.
