When I logged into EQ for the first time one of the very first things I did was start looking for a way to change the camera view. If it hadn't had a good 3rd person view I probably wouldn't have been able to get hooked on it, so I wouldn't have gotten hooked on mmorpgs, so I wouldn't be posting here.
1st person view has always really bugged me. It's that feeling that I'm wearing blinders or looking through a tube, it just bugs the heck outa me. I've got nothing against 1st person view as long as I don't have to use it.
Something I feel compelled to say though is that when any of you say that first person is more immersive you should always add the words "for me". Because it's only more immersive if you like it.
I played Neocron for a bit. Many people haven't played that game so its baiscally, interface wise, a lot like Deus Ex. Basically its an FPS view where you get thing bounded with little highlight corner when you "aim" at them. I have to say I enjoyed it a lot especially since Neocron is a Sci-fi game with guns and psychic powers. you can even get a sniper rifle and zoom etc.
You can also do things like climb ladder and shoot from them. I have to say that the only MMORPGs that are truly 3d are Neocron and DDO. The other games have a z-axis, but they don't really use it. Heck Neocron is what like 6 years old? Its flying creatures actually fly! I mean they leave the ground and go up in the air. Most of these games have all their birds etc constantly hovering. In DDO you can litteraly climb up 10 stories worth of ladders and get shot into the air via steam vents. You can also backflip or frontflip over a mob (and since there is collision detection that is important) ify ou have really high tumble skills.
But other games I generally like to do 3rd person. It is only in the truly 3d games that I ever feel an urge to go first person. But that may have more to do with the there being no detached mouse look in either of those games since they both reticles. Maybe that is the real issue.

This is the way I feel in games like WoW or EQ1 or Guild Wars. The only exceptions being the 3d game I mentioned above. Otherwise I feel like I might be missing something going on that I could otherwise see.
Having experienced other games though I found that this is kind of unfortunate. I have that feeling. But in the two games where I was inclinded the other way I found them to be more viscerally immersive. Especially Neocron which has a first person view. Unfortunately DDO only has one when you back the camera into a wall.
I dunno there are obvious display advantages to third person and everyone instinctively knows, But I have started to think it takes something harder to quantify away from the experience. Why should i be able to see behind me? Do I have eyes in the bakc of my head. Should I jump like a cat who tail got stepped on when something hits me from behind?
Third person view divorces you from what is really going on. I think for a game like WAR that is very much meant to be played on a large tactical field that is ok. But for games with a personal combat maybe its not so great even if we feel like we really want it.
I guess I'm one of the few who like 3rd person. I like to watch my character fighting and I also like a more startegic view of whats going on durng a fight. I can understand how having a first person view can be more immersive since you can't see what's behind you, but I'm not a big fan of it even though I liked EQ a lot. I also don't enjoy seeing weapons swing in first person view as it hinders your view somewhat again and is distracting.
It's all a matter of preference. I've never seen a 1st person view that I like. That's not to say I never use 1st person. I played Call of Duty for several years so of course I had to use 1st person in that game. But even there I always wished it had a 3rd person view.
People always say that 1st person is more realistic and therefore more immersive. I disagree with the more immersive arguement because that's a subjective thing. But I also disagree with the realism arguement. Neither view is realistic.
3rd person is unrealistic because you see behind you. 1st person is unrealistic because you can't see enough. And just in terms of general awareness of your surroundings I feel that 3rd person view is actually more realistic. There are things about our real life awareness of our surroundings that just can't be mimicked by a game on a monitor. Sight, sound and touch all come into play in real life. Also, in real life we are constantly moving our eyes and our head (unless we are staring fixedly at a computer screen). We constantly scan around in an almost unconscious, automatic way. Games simply cannot duplicate that. Even if you can turn the head of your character to look to the side it isn't the same.
Anyway, what it comes down to is that people like what they like and there is no changing anyones mind by arguing about it. That's why games should give people options.
I dont know if eq2 does it I dont they do I didnt play it very long but I miss the first person combat it helps me feel more involved in the game its so much easier for me to enjoy if they have first person combat like that. Now of course some people prefer third person and now days with constant mobs around you its hard to use first person combat. If anyone knows of any games like this please share.
I prefer first person view and felt Vanguard nailed it pretty well, didn't keep playing the game after 3 months when it was released due to limited time.
Overall first person view with most MMO's kinda suck, they let you zoom in and thats about it, when using weapons or ability's all you saw was the effect it had, no sword swing, no beams or what ever no limbs swinging around. With Vanguard you see your arms, legs, weapon swing and feel this is what you mean OP?
Must say I don't know if current version of Vanguard still has this option
I play EQ 1 now, and I love the First Person Perspective in gameplay. It makes the environment and world feel more real.
I agree that games that make 3rd person perspective beneficial suck. It is like forcing you to do that.
I agree. Also to go farther, in that using 3rd person view in PvP is basically telling you to 'cheat' and put eyes in the back of your head to gain a competive advantage. Since everyone can do it though, no one complains. People just yell at you and tell you to scoll back your view. I played WoW in first person at first, but had to switch to 3rd when I started doing PvP. I have since quit that game, but it was sad that I had to loose some emerison to get more competitive.
I also didn't realize EQ1 had a third person view for the first year I played!. I started using it after that while Fear Kiting, to make sure a roamer didn't sneak up on me. However, I only had to switch to it for a second or two every 15-30 seconds and not play exclusively in 3rd view.
Thats your opinion but it does not mean it stinks just because you think it does lol, anyways about staying on topic I dont care it isnt a big deal and its my post anyways.
See exactly it feels more realistic, its good to watch your character do flips and animations but honestly it just makes me feel like im watching a movie then being really involved in combat, single player games are good for watching animations, I think if more games made both options alot more intuitive in games then alot more people would play, I also had to zoom out to kite with my bard but I always chose first person when I was not kitting.
And its not hard to play a game in first person you just have to watch your environment closely its more of a challenge third person is easy mode in my opinion. Another big plus is in groups there was always someone watching your back like in real medievil battles very cool and it makes group play alot more meaningful it truly does trust me.

Play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Multiplayer.
That game got Fantasy based FPS combat perfect, way better than Oblivion.
