the (2nd) MAIN REASON to play WAR......................

potential.

Of course, the main reason is that it's a lot of fun...

But another reason is its potential. Mythic has assured us they will never be raising the level cap (renown cap is a different thing), meaning that your characters automatically become more valuable - as your gear isn't going to be rendered obsolete by level cap increases.

Given this, everything you do to make your character better will never be considered a wasted effort. So already, Mythic has grasped the long term player base market. There is never going to be a Burning Crusade special, where we find entire Guilds quitting the game.

Long term players are usually what makes the Community what it is. They are usually  the ones in charge of the biggest guilds etc. I mean, you never find any 2008 players manning a Goonfleet squad do you?

So, bearing in mind this longevity, end game will be evermore competitive between realms as time goes on, as there'll be very old, organized guilds and eventually, a lot of very geared characters (which is a good thing IMO, as a fight between the l33t is a lot more fun to me than a fight between the l33t and the sheet or the sheet and the sheet). Furthermore, long term players will inevitably be rolling alts, so lower level scenarios won't forever be a noob fest.... a reason in itself to reroll if you like competition at the lower levels.

To add on to this longevity factor, there is the (pretty much guaranteed) prospect of more cities opening up for RvR, as well as the addition of new and exciting careers. New and exciting careers means whole new mechanics, whole new skills and whole new moral abilities and tactics... this is unlike in MMORPGs where they simply decide to increase the level cap, just giving current classes a few more abilities. And i don't have to explain what new cities mean to you ;-)

To sum up, if you haven't pre-ordered WAR yet, or if you aren't yet planning on buying it, I would suggest doing so. WAR's long term factor far outweighs any MMORPG to date (i mean, josh said he thinks it'll be around in 30years, lol), as there are so many races and cities they could add, without screwing up the game and our current characters. And don't forget - older players usually end up being the most l33t, so i'd suggest jumping on the band wagon as soon as you can ;)

Edit: A level cap doesn't mean that new gear won't be introduced into the game, as one person in this thread has suggested. Although I explain why further down this thread, I just thought i'd post it here too, just in case people are too lazy to scroll down :P

Currently there are 3 branches of gear per career (not including stand alone armour) - PvE, RvR and Bounty Hunter... of which there are 20 sets in total divided up among said branches. Does a level cap at 40 mean that new gear can't be introduced later on in the game? No, there is nothing stopping Mythic from introducing, for example, another branch for each career, nor is there anything stopping them from introducing stand alone gear. WAR is a lot more flexible that way actually... there are numerous different set types I can think of..., for example, an 'assassin' set, which focuses on boosting a character's 1v1 capability. Any aspect of the game that requires a player to play differently can be associated with a gear set, to increase a player's effectiveness in that area.

Moreover, Mythic introducing new races into the game will automatically mean a flood of new items/sets... for as you know, each career has their own gear, unlike in other fantasy MMOs,  where multiple classes can use a single item. In other words, they won't just chuck a new career in the game and expect players to utilize and strive for items that are already in the game.

Personally I like the fact that this game doesnt force you to raid. For me and many others thats certainly a very big factor. It doesnt force me to play the game for silly amounts of time and I have that freedom to go try out singleplayer games, given the fact that its September.

Naturally, like all MMOs about to launch it has potential. AoC had bucket loads of potential, but look where that ended up.

I think WAR will have 0 problems with content for the first 3 months, given that there is so much of it available at launch. My concerns are:

-How they will handle bug fixing

-How quickly they will start adding additional content

Once you hit the three month mark and theres no new content, the 'achiever' gamers start to get a bit frustrated that they have nothing to do. I mean sure they can continue to grind their RR to 80 but thats a long term objective. At the 1 month mark I'm guessing we'll have people getting ready for city sieging.

I think it would be good if post launch they announced a Road Map for where the game is going in the next few months and STICK TO IT. (unlike FC).

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

If I were to pre order, being Uk based whats the best outlet to buy from, btw I like to own the box so dont want direct2drive

  • grimbojgrimboj Member Posts: 2,102

I don't know how I feel about this tbh.

A lot of WoW players are bored because they have almost the best of everything, I mean diminishing returns kicks in (T6->T6.5 worth it?) and this new expansion will give them something to do. I stopped playing guild wars when I got the best gear availible as there didn't seem much point continuing. I guess it all depends on what you get for renoun ranks!?

    Go to this link: http://www.war-europe.com/#/edition/?lang=en

At the bottom, there is a list of affiliated partners for the UK/EU version of WAR. Partners that have (premium) next to their name grants you open beta access on the 7th.

Yah I hate raiding! I love the idea of advancing my character and I like PvP/RvR large scale instances but I hate the whole "nerdrage" end-game PvE. I'm concerned about the longevity of WAR, I guess you can manage it yourself by maxing renoun and finding all the PvE content but are they going to add raids or up the renoun ranks!?

Another main difference with WAR, is that PvP is actually fun. Therefore, having the best gear (which will take a looooong time to get in itself... considering you might only get 1 or maybe even 2 epic RvR pieces for every time your realm is successful in reaching the opposition's capitol... and you might not even get the right pieces for your set) does not equate to a lack of fun. It equals MORE fun. Better gear enhances your 'fun' level. So when you feel like pooning, you just jump on your l33t character.

When you're not pooning noobs on your l33t character, you jump on your alts. 20 careers is MORE than enough to keep you occupied for the next 5 years.

I'll agree with everything except the part about more cities as 'pretty much guaranteed.' This has been widely hypothesized but nothing is guaranteed. I certain hope more goes in later down the line and think if any game is going to do it, WAR will.

The only problem with 'pretty much guaranteed' means 'it's a lock' in the minds of many people. Then if they don't see it, they become unhappy.

*shrug* I'm playing for the long term (unless something truly unforeseen happens) anyways so I've already made up my mind and I'm on your side.

    Even furthermore,

There is nothing stopping Mythic from introducing new armour/weapons into the game that are available at the current level cap. A level cap of 40 does not mean a cap on new weapons/armour. I mean, consider this:

At present, each career has 60 armour sets - 20 in each of the 3 branches (PvE set, RvR set and bounty hunter set). They could just add another branch, couldn't they.

Frankly I'm looking forward to the big city events.  The collective effort and final showdown seems like it's going to be really crazy.  The only thing is they need to make sure when you get into further into the tiers they add some events to keep them fresh.  That way you don't feel like you are doing the same thing over and over level characters.

With the population bonuses and fairly low level caps, I'm thinking that it is going to be fun to be able to play opposite factions as well.  The only thing that turned me off from mid level rvr in DAoC was in each bracket you had to be templated to compete.  Since you can't stay in a level range intentionally, you won't be going up against twinked out characters.

I'm looking forward to chicken zergs of Tier 1 personally. ;)

Hmm, well they have templates for 4 of the other cities already. It's all a matter of actually putting the designs into the computer, creating instances for them, creating the NPCs and creating loot drops etc. as well as bosses.

I'm almost 100% sure they'll introduce 2 new  cities in the next expansion :-/ because there's so little work to be done to implement em

World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.

Actually there would be a lot needing to be done. They would have to create a full 'instance' for each of the cities and add each  city would have to have it's opposite to 'balance' the world 'WAR' status. Then probably timers for city takeover combats (which makes little sense if you think about it) because what happens if two (or more) cities on the same side are attacked at the same time because the overall mechanic says that when one side reaches X point of dominance, the opposing city opens up for attack. (Interesting, of course..which city do you defend?)

Overall, I could see cities being added as a top level 'forts' possibly but don't see them going in as  equals to IC/Altdorf. I hope I am incorrect here but only time will tell. As before, I don't care in general. I know content WILL go in and it will be done in both a logical and fun manner. That's how Mythic tries to do things and so far has succeeded.

    Me too! I want Skaven!!!

I agree with the Op on the general concept of the post. I am not sure about the additional cities but I hope they do add them at some point.

I would also like to see more "Lore" based, class driven PVE content. The Warhammer fantasy roleplay game is awesome. The Witchhunter is the easiest to do this in my opinion. PVE quests that are meant to be solo and have some impact of the realm sort of like the Desitny quests in AOC but with realm level affects. An army of witch hunters is cool but one hunting down a fiend of chaos that is subverting a village through a multi-tiered quest taking several levels to complete would rock!

Wow. The original post is so simple... but I've never thought of that before, lol.

I was just thinking a couple weeks ago while my subscription to WoW was running out, "man, all this honor grinding for S3 gear is all going to be for nothing as soon as WotLK comes out." That's a VERY depressing thought.

I'm glad that with WAR I wont have to think that :P. Making everything the player does at level cap obsolete by raising the level cap is a terrible way to induce more grinding into an already boring endgame :(.

  • Bruticus_XIBruticus_XI Member Posts: 827

Well, with WAR for me the second reason is actually Mythic. Honest, competant, and listening to their customers, what more could you want? They also know when to draw the line. Anything that'd destroy the integrity of the game they won't add, even if tons of people (just an example) actually wanted the level cap to be raised in an expansion. It's just another carrot on a stick, another way to waste your money and time.

But I do agree with the OP.

They ve said they plan on adding the other 4 cities and having the main goal of city capping with the pairings rotating. I personally like the 2 cities to fight over as opposed to 6 maes more concentrated fights. Also the 3 pairings rotating makes for different raids/instances when they change.

There are only 20 armor sets per career right now across all 3 branches!

Interview with Jeff Hickman at Leipzip for confirmation! @2:25 starts the armor sets Q&A; amount of and description of armor sets for careers!
