Water cooling need help....

cichy1012cichy1012 Member UncommonPosts: 347

Need to reinstall my water cooling system from Danger Den, but I dont have any fluid, and I dont want to wait 3-5 days to get it in the mail, as there is no where near me that sells it.

What can I use...? Can I make my own with distilled water and something?

You could just re use the fluid that was in the system. It's not the best choice, but will work. I would recommend though the order some new fluid and replace the old stuff when you get the chance.

ripe the fluid water system out and stick fans in less hassle thats what i did)))

I use home made fuid and have never had any problems.

    • 6 parts Distilled water (available from most garages)
    • 1 part Antifreeze (be sure it's methanol + NAP free)
    • 1 squirt of liquid soap (hand wash, unpurfumed if possible but not essential)

The antifreeze thickens the liquid and makes it too thick to cirulate properly, but the soap breaks down the viscosity of the liquid and makes it perfect for water cooling. It also aids in removing air from the system as it reduces the surface tension.

Coors light works well as does amber bock. Try either.

  • wow interesting replies in this thread..... i personally wouldn't use anything besides distilled water as a lot of chemicals can be bad for your water pump.... check out the water cooling section at xtremesystems forums.... if you need to know anything about computers you will find it there....

and take your time waterever you do... watercooling is not something to be rushed!

Use ice.  It's one of the coldest forms of water there is.

nice recipe do you have to top the liquid soap side of things up from time to time because even in a contained unit the surfactants from the soap that are breaking down the antifreeze to a managble viscosity will be constantly degrading.

I would not recomend this because buying the proper fluids are cheaper then this. The cost is roughly 6 bucks for the cheaper stuff that will outperform this.

Not to mention this is a stupid and dangerous setup. For anyone who has pets or if this breaks open inside your PC then you got a fire hazard. Methanol is very combustable and unstable. When you mix methanol as described above with a surficant such as phosphorous or enzymes in this case the Methanol will go through a change back to concentrate within the system. There will be a small area inside the plumbing that will have a concentrated methanol mix and if it ever leaked out and sparked with hardware then you got a small fire.

Not to mention the family dog or cat will lick this shit because it is very sweet, leaking out of the case. A dog or cat will die within a few hours.

Do us a favor and buy the real stuff it is cheaper and less risky. Or better yet get rid of water cooling altogether and go for a good air cooled system. Water cooled systems can only effectively remove x amount of heat before they become ineffective. This is why so many overclockers have a hard time understanding why their overclocked air cooled machine is only slightly less warm then the water cooled. Most times air cooled is better depending on systems. To effectively eliminate more heat water cooled systems need bigger or more radiators and bigger pumps to achieve better cooling. While air cooling with better thermal compounds and better heat distribution will yield better results for less.

Did you read the recipe he clearly states ensure methanol and NAP free :)

But a good warning if anyone was to use the recipe gotta double n triple check the antifreeze part.

No I missed that, but still anyone doing this will spend more $ doing it and have worse results then the cheapest stuff.
