I have been getting into the game and have still not left the starter area. I could stay here a good long time. Ryzom is fun as a F2P but I honestly can't see subscribing to a third MMO right now.
Other games are F2P with a cash shop for cosmetic type items (nothing that takes the balance out of the game) and I think they could do that here as well. Maybe offer features for pay that would look cool (custom mounts, housing, clothing) or have extra storage or priority NPC vendor or such.
I am affraid considering the games past, that if they build up the customer base like they have been, and then switch from F2P to paid subscription, they may lose a lot of people.
Look at Anarchy online. You can either pay for free and can go all the way to the normal top level or for $5 a month you can get shadowlands with a lot more and go to 220 or you can go all the way with a full sub to get everything included. It works there so why not try something similar here.

The only way that freebie people matter to MMOs is filling up the world, aside from that they're pretty useless to the developers and pretty much a drain on them. (yes filling up the world is very useful)
We don't even know what cards the developers have in the deck so we can't even guess what they have in their hand.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I'm not against a f2p model by principle, but I don't see it possible in Ryzom, for these reasons:
1. item shops: being the game strongly based on the player crafting everything, i really don't see what items a shop could sell, without ruining the gameplay.
2. Anarchy Online. Being an AO veteran with a full account and a froob acount, i know that model. First: ingame advertisement don't fit in a fantasy game, second: Anarchy Online is build with several expansions that can be played almost independantly, even sharing the same world. Ryzom has no expansions, how you could make a similar model? What you can limit in Ryzom without ruining the sandbox style of the game?
I don't see them applicable in Ryzom, maybe the new team can find another model, but I prefer a p2p.
If Ryzom cannot be your 1st or 2nd mmo, that means you are not captured by the game and probably you would spend very few time into it, even as f2p. So, what will be the advantage for the owners?
I agree with you, it's crazy to pay 3 different MMOs, I never payed more than 2 at same time.
Actually, even with Ryzom free of charge, I decided to not pay anything else, just because I already know i will spend most of my time in ryzom.
If you don't like it enough to pay for it, you probably will not play it much in any case.
This is just my opinion.
